Review "When I saw the term 'darkly erotic' I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised to find that 'Mercy Most Tender' isn't limited to graphic gay erotica, although there is plenty of that. But this is a complex, intricate and captivating novel with so many layers, from the unfolding of true love, (with all the turmoil and uncertainty that come with a new romance), to the 'dark' eroticism which builds to impassioned sado-masochism - and beyond. In its pages we go back in time in the world of Greenwich Village in the late nineteen-sixties. We visit its streets and businesses and mingle with the flower-power hippie generation who were a part of the sexual revolution of that time. We meet several interesting occupants in Goldleaf's world, such as the homophobic fundamentalist Christian who becomes obsessed with a gay man to the point of insanity. I found all the characters richly developed, especially the two lovers, Joey and Evan, who each hides a few secrets of his own, as we find out. There is mystery, jealousy, nostalgia, sex, crazy love, the criminal element, a couple of murders, and even (to my surprise) a few moments of humor. The book is also a reminder of how oppressed and misunderstood same-sex relationships were in the early days of the gay revolution - long before gay relationships were more broadly accepted and long, long before same-sex marriages were legalized. From the Author EXCERPTS..The night was rainy, with rare rumblings of distant thunder. As usual on a rainy night, all the lights were turned off, except the bedroom lamp with the blue lights. Evan and Joey cuddled together naked in bed,with the windows ajar to let in the sounds and scents of a rainy Manhattan night. From their warm bed they could hear the soft patter of raindrops on the leaves of nearby trees that grew on West 11th Street,which harmonized with the watery pelting of rainfall on the pavement below. With the windows slightly open, other noises of the city filtered through as well--faraway car horns, the tires of a passing automobile--but these were only occasional sounds; the rain was steady and lush, mesmerizing, sometimes scattered in sprays upon by the night breeze. Snuggling under their comforter that night, Evan held Joey in his arms and kissed his forehead, his nose, his chin, his mouth. The lamp provided enough light to clearly see the outline of each other's facial features. As the rhythm of the stormy night serenaded them,they held hands and kissed, with no words spoken. After a long moment of stillness, Evan touched Joey's face and looked into his eyes. "How can all the oceans of love I'm feeling fit into one little Italian boy like you? . . . I'm in heaven when I feel you around me. There's nothin' in the world like holding you so close that we become, like, one person. Connected. I've never really loved anyone before you. And I know I could never love anybody else." Joey moved closer to kiss Evan and be kissed by him. "I want you to make love to me, Evan, please. I want you so much." ...... But he loved Evan. Passionately. With all his being. He was happier with Evan than he had ever been, in all the days of his life. And Evan did own him, because Joey wanted to be owned by him. Whatever Evan did, he would take it. How could he not? Thinking hurt his brain, and the pain slumped down into his chest. His own feelings were indecipherable, even to himself. They made no sense. No words could give expression to what he felt. He wanted to run away, away from himself, and for a while forget everything. The record played on as Joey walked into his little bedroom. Their playroom. He picked up the belt from the bed where Evan had left it, and as he touched it, an angry, hurtful sob poured forth from his throat. A choking sob. With the belt in his hand, he struck the bed and a silken cushion repeatedly, ripping its covering with the buckle. He whipped the bed and the cushion, expelling grunts of temper as he did so, and tore down the curtains that had hung over it. When he ran out of breath, he threw down the belt and wailed out loud....

This is without a doubt the best book I've read this year in the M/M genre By Dbozz This is without a doubt the best book I've read this year in the M/M genre. The pseudonymous Barrie Goldleaf is obviously an accomplished and talented author but one that comes on the scene with no fanfare or discernible history.It was pure luck to have stumbled across this work on Amazon, in Prime no less, while looking for a long book I could sink my teeth into and one that was dark. This couldn’t have been more perfect, containing goodly amounts of BDSM (mostly in the form of domestic discipline), rape, pedophilia, pimping, cheating on partners, unbearable suspense, passionate lovemaking, a few murders and a pair of MCs that drive this plot from here to kingdom come…or at least to Upstate New York.Goldleaf gives us a well told tale that is both character and plot driven, a joy to find when delivered in equal measure as it is here. Set against a backdrop of Greenwich Village in the 60s, it is loaded with atmosphere, intense conflict and characters that come off the page with a palpable underlying passion for each other.The foreshadowing is so well placed it creates a suspense I found nearly unbearable. I flew through pages in two all night sittings to the finish, while at the same time hoping it would never end. (By then I had moved in with the MCs and was having breakfast with them.)If the joy is in the journey not the destination, no truer words could better describe this book. Aside from a few misplaced or missing words an editor would clean up, I found some of the ending to be a bit labored and sappy for my tastes but not to worry, you’ll be so out of breath by the time you get there it won’t matter.Fortunately, the title of this book has a #1 after it as listed on Amazon, indicating there’s more to come by this mysterious, favorite new author of mine.Don’t miss this one if you have a kinky bone in your body.

Gray I found this to be a very intriguing story.First it's set in New York in the 60's at the beginning, I would say, of Gay Pride.The term darkly erotic......yes there are some very dark spots, but also humor.It's not fair how the Author allows you to think the "bad guy" is very close....when in actuality it's a totally different person.That twist was excellent in my opinion.I very much look forward to book 2 in this series..
