The War Generation, the first of the Iraqi Americans book series, is a collection of 36 articles that Weam Namou wrote over the years which paint a picture of Iraqi Americans’ political and social situation and their struggles. Namou writes, “The views that leaders, politicians and activists I interviewed had about Iraq and the United States fascinated me, especially since their views largely differed from, or were not found in, mainstream media. Given these people’s direct connection to both countries, I felt it was important that their stories and perspectives be heard.”
A full color book, The War Generation has a large focus on Christianity and the biblical city of Nineveh because, after the 2003 US-led invasion, Christians were heavily targeted by fundamentalists. Many leaders foresaw the genocide that began in June 2014 against this group of people and tried for over a decade to establish an autonomous region in Nineveh for Christians and other minorities in Iraq. Their efforts were in vain.

Bringing the Iraqi American community to the forefront By Rebecca Davis I was not aware of the Iraqi American community in Michigan, which the author focuses on in this book. This community has not only existed for decades, it has been growing at a fast pace after the 2003 US-led invasion. Namou emphasizes the need for Americans to understand Iraqis and vice versa, and reading the articles, it's easy to understand why. Their outlook on the war, the military, the refugee crisis, immigration and the United States is not something we often see in mainstream media. Yet it's exactly what we need to see, hear and read about in order to under these areas and how they relate to them and us.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Iraqi American Voices By Carol McDonald Just when you think you've read about everything, you find an author who actually has something new to say. In The War Generation, not only does Namou introduce new subjects, like the Nineveh Plains Project, but you realize that Iraqi Americans' views are definitely marginalized and their voices need to be heard.

I’m an Iraqi American and couldn’t believe the stories I had read. I felt touched, but also conflicted, because this book challenged so many of my emotions and viewpoints. After reading this book I’m really looking forward to what Namou has planned next in this series.
