New Amish Fiction!

Miriam and Abram have so many blessings: a young baby, another on the way, and a successful Amish buggy tour business. However, their bed and breakfast is taking forever to get off the ground. None of the Englischers want to stay there once they hear that they will be living the simple life, with no indoor bathrooms or electricity! All that changes when an unexpected visitor shows up at their door. Lee seems to be a teenage runaway, and when he offers to pay his way by helping out around the haus, Abram and Miriam can’t refuse. Lee has great ideas to increase the number of customers at the bed and breakfast, but he also has a sordid past and a huge secret. When he asks Abram and Miriam to keep this secret, they agree…but they don’t realize how serious it is. When the elders find out, Abram and Miriam find themselves about to be shunned! What is Lee’s secret, and will Abram and Miriam be shunned for keeping it? Will Lee be able to help Abram and Miriam save the bed and breakfast, or is it doomed to failure? Download today to find out! Note: This book may be enjoyed alone or in combination with its prequels, the Amish Hearts, Amish in College, and Amish Couples series.

Just when they think they are doing the right thing, everything seems to turn itself back on them and makes them seem to be the 'bad' guys. A young traveler comes to town with secrets that he doesn't want revealed so quickly. Miriam and Abram welcome him and abide by his wishes of remaining silent about his past, which is a big no-no in the Amish community, especially if it means having to stretch the truth to ones elders. The lifestyle of the Amish is one that ha captured my attention since I began reading all of Kristina's books. She has captured their way of life in such a realistic manner, I think of myself being right there with them as all their drama unfolds. I personally don't like the minister's wife and probably wouldn't have shut my mouth as easily a Miriam did, good thing I'm not Amish as I would have be banned way long ago. Great read and perfect for all readers of every genre to get caught up in the way of the Amish.

Unbelievable to read of a couple being shunned, you are intrigued as to why. Trying to start a new venue of a bed and breakfast, which isn't going well. So, they are dealing with the loss of those dreams. When a bedraggled boy comes, they welcome him. Which is the Amish way of doing, so how can that be wrong. But, it was, who is this.boy.? To honor his wishes they keep quiet, and it later causes all kinds of problems..Kristina has dealt into a heavy subject, and done it beautiful. You will anxiously await the next one to find out, hopeful to find all is resolved. But, the bishops in their community are not forgiving. You will ponder many questions reading this one and one you will want to read.Given book by Kristina for an honest opinion, and I thank you for doing so.

The storyline was interesting and kept me engaged throughout the entire book.Levi, the wayward son of the gruff new preacher and his trouble making wife, appears at Miriam and Abram's door. The caring young couple allow him to stay for a few days. They eventually learn the young mans true identity.Miriam and Abram soon find themselves in big trouble with the ministers of their church. Will the couple be shunned for taking Levi in? Read the book to find out.I was slightly disappointed at the way this book ended. The reader is left hanging until the next book comes out. I'll have to wait for the sequel to find out what happens to Miriam and Abram.

Given that we all have shades of grey, it would be inappropriate to expect him to be saintly & attitude-free. It's his mercurial nature that makes him what he is. Unfortunately, despite having some mildly-shocking revelations, the book fails to impress, though it does make one glued to it. First of all, this should never have been called an Autobiography. It isn't one. It neither covers his full journey, nor it goes into details about occurrences apart from the sunset battles. While I personally enjoyed following all English cricketers on Twitter and enjoyed the banter, KP certainly wasn't enjoying it. Sad, he thought it that ugly and he certainly knew the intents better than I did. I am currently reading Ricky Ponting's autobiography and I find it so much more inspiring & enjoyable. KP, man... you deserved a better autobiography than this bitter tale. Thank you for entertaining us over the years.

By Malleus Maleficarum 1500 years ago, Procopius of Caesarea, the last historian of antiquity wrote 'The Secret History', the ultimate warts and all expose of the inner workings of the court of Justinian I of the Eastern Roman Empire where he laid bare the failings of the most exalted men and women of his time. KP's latest autobiography does a 'Secret History' on English cricket and he pretty much launches a blitzkrieg against his former colleagues and team-mates from which many may never recover. Justinian, at least wasn't alive when the Secret History was published - KP's team-mates are out of luck.To start off, it's clear that this is not a book about cricket - this is a book written with the sole aim of bringing out in the public domain KP's version of the extraordinary events that led to England's highest ever run-scorer being shunted out by his own team and what a narrative it is! At some points, you know that this is the lashing out of a desperate man who feels he has his back against the wall, with his own comrades having turned against him. There is some desultory description of his childhood and his growing years but the narrative, which oscillates back and forth between the later stages of his international career and events of his past is very clearly setup to provide the context to the behind the scenes revelations that KP wants the public to know. This book is probably best read as a confessional from a maverick who felt suffocated in his work place. There is precious little romance or the higher ideals of sport here and one would also argue, not an over-abundance of objectivity either. KP's world is dominated by back-stabbers, politicians and petty gossips. There is no doubt about how KP seems himself - the righteous hero who gave his all to his team and got nothing in return but vitriol and slights. It would be easy to dismiss this account as the delusions of an over-sensitive person who had an unreal image of his own achievements but the problem is that KP's record is quite stellar. Throughout his career as a batsman, he has been a stand-out performer in a team that is not really known for stand-out performers.There-in lies the heart of the story - KP was quite clearly more gifted and talented than most of his team mates and in terms of professional as well as pecuniary accomplishments, he dwarfed his comrades. His book makes it clear that he feels that this made him the target of others in the team who didn't and possibly couldn't have what he had. The tales of team mates sniping against him using a fake twitter account, the jibes on him in the customary books that English cricketers must release every 3 years make one wonder of how adults can be reduced to the level of playground bickering. What's most devastating though, is the picture he paints of the English cricket team and the management structures around it as a group of clique driven mediocrities who couldn't be trusted. Everyone in KP's sights gets an unbelievable roasting for their hypocrisy and their envious snipes at him. Pride of place goes to his former coach, Andy Flower - feted as a genius who brought about the golden age of English cricket in the late 2000s - but for KP, he is a pitiable corporate mid-manager, who destroyed team morale, betrayed the confidence of players, created an offensive team environment that sucked the joy out of life and was solely interested in managing the bosses. Next up is Matt Prior, probably the only one in the team who was as flashy as KP but surprise, surprise, likes repel! KP is clear that Matt was a buffoon who had limited talent and an unlimited ego, who was only interested in playing the political game and was the consummate 'jerk' - berating his own players when they misfielded (which I find quite rich since the only person to drop more catches than iron-gloves Prior was Pakistan's inept Kamran Akmal). KP lampoons Prior mercilessly and mocks his pompous habit of referring to himself as the Big Cheese, talking up his flashy lifestyle and his efforts to build a coterie of juniors around him. Prior's eventual downfall is something clearly relished by KP and he makes no efforts to hide it. Others to feel the wrath of KP include the nasty bowler's gang of Broad and Swann and the man who disappointed him the most, the milk-sop captain Alistair Cook. KP at last gives the lowdown of what happened in the last few tests of the Ashes, when after being hammered by the Aussies and Mitchell Johnson in particular, the team briefly raised the banner of revolt against Flower's gulag regime but in the end, they folded like umbrellas with Cook betraying his team mate to Flower and making him the scapegoat for the planned anti-Flower coup. There are many more snipes at the political structure of the ECB, which in KP's estimation, is run by non-entities who amounted to nothing in their playing careers but are now just interested in politics and career advancement in a manner which would make even the most canny operators in cut-throat corporates look like amateurs. As for the book, there is no pretence of this being an even-handed or objective assessment of what went wrong with the English cricket team - this is KP's side of the story and in quite a few incidents that are narrated, readers will find themselves straining to empathize with him. Despite that caveat, I still think this is a very enjoyable book for a number of reasons:1. Very few international cricketers write with the candour and the no-holds barred approach that is evident in this book. Hence, for most of us fans, the inner workings of the dressing room, the clash of egos and the dysfunctional relationships either remain hidden or at best are hinted at by a few magazines (these are then followed by prosaic 'everything is fine between us' denials)2. All of us have met and interacted with people like these at some point in our life. Like I said, this is not a book about cricket as much as a confessional about a dysfunctional workplace. We've all had bosses who were mediocre, supervisors who told bald-faced lies, the office suck-ups, the yes-men and all - this book is full of situations and people that most readers will be familiar with and the chances are very high that you'll recognize 2-3 personalities from your own life you absolutely abhor3. The overall tone of the book is quite honest - to the extent that I think it accurately portrays how KP felt about the incidents and instances mentioned here - and it's quite clear that in 90% of the cases, he felt the aggrieved party. For a man cast as the Ego Who Walks, in 10% of the case he admits quite openly that there were elements of his personality that many would not have liked, he admits he did things that he shouldn't have. KP is also brutally honest about his priorities in life and his approach to the game and the openness with which he talks about should give the reader a very good idea about the man's personality.Which brings me to my final point. At the end of the day, the discerning reader will clearly notice that in the KP vs the World battle, anything wrong that KP does is a genuine or an honest mistake, he can't help being who he is but almost everything that someone else does is put down to intended malice and diabolical plots hatched by dishonourable men. In what can be construed as paranoia worthy of Nero or Herod I, KP seems to believe that the entire cricket establishment in England, whether by volition or by accident formed a grand alliance to plot against him and bring him down. He was always the wronged party, the tall poppy being cut down by 'peers' who couldn't measure up to him. Yet, I find it hard to believe that KP could have fallen out with almost everyone who is anyone in English cricket without having some role to play - perhaps he downplays it, perhaps he is truly blind to it. I also think that many incidents might have been just stray comments or one-offs which have been weaved into this grand narrative of injustice. When your whole world revolves around yourself (and KP acknowledges that it does) you start thinking that everyone else's world revolves around you too. I would take the claims that there were secret meetings of shadowy figures plotting KP's downfall with quite a lot of pinch of salt. However, I truly believe that this was how KP saw things and more perceptive managers or captains would have noticed this and dealt with it in a more nuanced manner than English cricket's standard off with the non-conformist's head policy.Overall, this is a good book to get inside the mind of a maverick and a man who was obsessed with playing and living in his own way. Many readers will probably say that KP could have been more of a team man, could have gone along with the silly corporate style team bonding exercises and the team meetings without letting his disdain come through but still, I think it's worthwhile to hear his side of the story - which I presume was all he ever wanted when he set out to write this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. and yet it feels like it a story of a spoiled little boy trying ... By Billy Craven I am not sure that this book adds value to anything except KP's bank balance. Cricket does not benefit, and nobody will want to read it ten years from now. Such a talented sportsman, and yet it feels like it a story of a spoiled little boy trying to justify what happened. You don't need to, the statistics tell the story. KP lets have a book about cricket from a great player.

The War Generation, the first of the Iraqi Americans book series, is a collection of 36 articles that Weam Namou wrote over the years which paint a picture of Iraqi Americans’ political and social situation and their struggles. Namou writes, “The views that leaders, politicians and activists I interviewed had about Iraq and the United States fascinated me, especially since their views largely differed from, or were not found in, mainstream media. Given these people’s direct connection to both countries, I felt it was important that their stories and perspectives be heard.”

A full color book, The War Generation has a large focus on Christianity and the biblical city of Nineveh because, after the 2003 US-led invasion, Christians were heavily targeted by fundamentalists. Many leaders foresaw the genocide that began in June 2014 against this group of people and tried for over a decade to establish an autonomous region in Nineveh for Christians and other minorities in Iraq. Their efforts were in vain.

Bringing the Iraqi American community to the forefront By Rebecca Davis I was not aware of the Iraqi American community in Michigan, which the author focuses on in this book. This community has not only existed for decades, it has been growing at a fast pace after the 2003 US-led invasion. Namou emphasizes the need for Americans to understand Iraqis and vice versa, and reading the articles, it's easy to understand why. Their outlook on the war, the military, the refugee crisis, immigration and the United States is not something we often see in mainstream media. Yet it's exactly what we need to see, hear and read about in order to under these areas and how they relate to them and us.

In The War Generation, not only does Namou introduce new subjects, like the Nineveh Plains Project, but you realize that Iraqi Americans' views are definitely marginalized and their voices need to be heard.

I’m an Iraqi American and couldn’t believe the stories I had read. I felt touched, but also conflicted, because this book challenged so many of my emotions and viewpoints. After reading this book I’m really looking forward to what Namou has planned next in this series.

From bestselling author Lynne Ewing comes a gritty, sexy novel perfect for fans of books like Perfect Chemistry—about a teen forced to become a "lure," a beautiful girl used by her street gang to seduce and entrap rival gang members.

The Lure tells the story of fifteen-year-old Blaise Montgomery, who lives on the dangerous outskirts of Washington, DC, where a stray bullet can steal a life on the way to school and death lurks around every corner. Drugs and violence are the only ways to survive, so Blaise and her friends turn to gangs for safety, money, and love. And when Blaise is accepted into one of the toughest gangs in the city, she's finally part of a crew. A family.

But as Blaise is put in increasingly dangerous situations, particularly as her gang's newest lure, she begins to see there's more to lose than she ever realized. Should Blaise continue to follow the only path she's ever known, or cut and run?

The Lure, by Lynne Ewing

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Blaise and her friends do not think any further than surviving high school-literally. Their low-income neighborhood in Washington, DC is controlled by rival gangs. The only way most teens have a chance at making it is to join one of these crews. Blaise is tough and chooses to undergo a brutal hazing ritual to fight her way into Core 9, but Melissa decides to get in through the "rollins" process-a throw of the dice determines how many guys she will have to have sex with to join. Blaise feels powerful at first and enjoys the extra money membership affords, but becomes desperate to escape as she sees Trek, the group's leader, abusing Melissa; witnesses the needless death of an 11-year-old boy; and gets "promoted" to the role of "lure"-bait to track down enemy gang members. Fairly true to the gritty reality of urban organized crime and violence, the ending, however, wraps up too quickly and perfectly, and readers will have to suspend disbelief to completely accept it. Place this fast-paced novel in collections where realistic urban fiction is popular. For fans of Allison van Diepen's Snitch (S & S, 2007) and Greg Takoudes's When We Wuz Famous (Holt, 2013).—Suanne B. Roush, Osceola High School, Seminole, FL

From Booklist Joining the Core 9 gang should offer Blaise protection from the drug deals, guns, and violence in her Washington, D.C., neighborhood, which borders three rival gangs. When she is asked by Core 9’s head gangbanger to dress sexily to lure enemy gang members to revenge beatings, however, she knows she is in danger. Blaise is a fighter with a “gangster sixth sense” for avoiding trouble, but even she is not sure she will make it out of high school alive. Ewing describes gritty and, unfortunately, all-too-realistic scenes in which poverty, fear, and self-preservation make Blaise and her friends take perilous risks, from theft to gang-initiation sex. The author doesn’t make judgments, but rather depicts the characters as products of their environment. The story’s nonstop action becomes an adrenaline rush when Blaise dares to think about a way out of her dead-end neighborhood. Even if she doesn’t make it out, she will go down fighting. An eye-opening, heart-pounding look at survival on the streets. Grades 9-12. --Angela Leeper

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining, but Can't Recommend It By Problem Solver I picked this book up because 1) it's set in DC, where I live and 2) it's written about a fictional gang seemingly based on the real gang MS-13. As an educator, I've had some professional experience with this topic and as a community member, I've heard the warnings from the police and read the news articles written about local gang activity. There certainly is a presence around these parts, so my curiosity was piqued with this fictional story. In a nutshell, The Lure is about Blaise, a high school girl, who elects to join Core 9 and once a member, becomes a "lure" for their leader, which means she begins seducing an enemy as a distraction so someone else can hurt the enemy or take him out. She is reluctant to do it and once she does it a few times, she begins to have doubts not only about her actions but those of the people "in charge."I have very mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, from what I know anyway, the events Ewing depicts are accurate and show the gritty, belligerent ways of gangs. Blaise thinks she's gaining a family, loyal friends, security, by joining Core 9 but what she actually gets is paranoia and certain death. Something I think that those unfamiliar with how gangs work may be surprised to learn is the idea that members understand that their death is inevitable and that it will probably happen soon. Several times characters reference how we all die at some point, how they think they'll only last a year, etc. Their concept of self-preservation is very different from most other people and is a difficult pill to swallow. Ewing has written an incredibly compelling and fast-paced novel that certainly made me think and that elicited all kinds of emotions, most notably sadness that this is reality for so many children and teens. Like watching a train wreck, I kept turning the pages to see how things would end up for Blaise and though Ewing leaves it open ended, the reader can certainly infer what probably happens to her.So while my immediate reading experience was fairly positive, this is not a book I feel I could recommend really to anyone and here's why. The dialogue and voice are inaccurate. The characters, all Latino gang members who have grown up in extreme poverty, speak like white kids who attend posh private schools with a handful of Spanish phrases peppered throughout. Blaise's inner monologue did not have nearly enough urgency for someone truly facing death. So while the events were well done, the people experiencing those events were not. Also, this book is extremely violent. This is to be expected in a book about gangs - there are group beatings, group rape, coercion through violence and sex, drug use, murders - I had some very vivid dreams for two nights while reading. I would under no circumstance suggest this book to any teenager to read for entertainment because 1) it's probably not the best introduction to the topic if they're unaware of it because of the graphic nature and 2) if they are aware of it or live it, why relive it on the page? If this was somehow meant to be a cautionary tale for potential gang members, I doubt it would sway anyone and I'd be shocked if it made it's way into their hands anyway.I was frankly shocked, because of the content, that this is a young adult book. The violence and graphic situations would be hard for most adults to stomach. That's not to say they couldn't handle it, they certainly could, but there is very little hope in this book and I can't see the overall package being attractive to teens. If you're interested in the subject matter, I'd recommend checking out some news articles instead. Just Google MS-13, you'll find a lot.Right down the middle - 2.5/5 - a well-planned, quick-moving plot, but I'm still confused as to who this book would be right for.

Count Your Blessings By A Book Vacation I have been extremely fortunate in life having grown up in a safe neighborhood with two loving parents that supported me in everything. I never had to worry for my safety when walking out the door, didn’t need to look over my shoulder at school, never had to know alternate routes to get home, worry about gunshots at all hours of the day, or whether there would be enough money coming in for my parents to pay the bills. I knew where my next meal was coming from, what colleges I wanted to go to, how I would pay for my education after high school, and that I could obtain my goals in life without much standing in my way.Blaise Montgomery doesn’t live in a safe neighborhood. Her mother is a drug addict, her father is dead, and her grandmother works late hours and brings home little money. Leaving her house is a risky choice, day in and day out. In order to stay alive, Blaise has to know multiple ways around her community in case the ever present dangers of gang violence close off a route, or two. She has to know what hallways she can walk down and what stairwells to avoid in school if she wants to get home in one piece, with her virginity still intact. She worries about her grandmother who works too hard and doesn’t have enough money to feed Blaise, let alone herself. Blaise would love to go to college, but can barely scrape by in school because survival is on her mind 24/7. The present is all that matters, and she knows, just like everyone else in her neighborhood, that life ends all too soon. She’s seen people try to better themselves, try to get out, but most of them end up in body bags. So what’s the point? While I have never experienced any of what Blaise experiences, the cold hard truth is that many, many children grow up in this exact environment, and as a high school teacher working on the cusp of the city, I’ve taught many of students in a similar situation. I didn’t used to know these places really existed, not until I became a teacher. If you don’t experience it, or you don’t know someone who has, it’s very easy to live in a bubble that just understand that there are many struggling to survive. And it’s a heartbreaking experience to realize that yes, this is real. Just because I haven’t lived it doesn’t mean it’s not. And while it’s easy to look down on people in these situations, saying they need to get an education, that they need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, that’s not a reality. What’s more important? Education or food? Education or life? Education or belonging? If you look at Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, you’ll note that physiological needs come first, and then that of safety. People need to have their basic needs met—food, water, excretion, sleep— before they can move up the scale. If these needs are met, then safety takes over. Those who don’t feel safe on a regular basis are, therefore, unable to move up the scale. They’re unable to have true friendships, or focus on family, because the very real fear for their safety controls everything they do and think. This explains exactly what Blaise is dealing with on a very real level. She barely has any food—she’s hungry a lot of the time, and she’s scared for her safety. Her need level has plateaued between Physiological and Safety. But once she’s part of a gang, once she’s found her “family,” she’s able to move up to the Love and Belonging stage—a stage she’s been yearning to grasp for some time. So it’s no surprise that she joins a gang in her neighborhood—a gang that literally beats her into it as their hazing ritual to see if she’s tough enough to stand within their ranks. And it makes me sick, but I’ve found that this hazing experience is another truth in terms of gang life—one I first heard about when discussing life with my students over the past few years.Within Core 9, Blaise fits in, and now she can begin to work towards self-esteem, confidence, achievement… except being in the gang doesn’t guarantee extreme safety, and as Blaise realizes fairly quickly, there is just as much to fear inside a gang than there is outside of it. So, she finds herself hovering between the Safety and Love/Belonging stage in the Hierarchy of Needs. Is it any wonder, then, that Blaise can’t focus on school? That she can’t foresee herself ever getting out of her ghetto alive, let alone bettering herself and going to college? While we may want to judge her, especially as the media likes to focus on the few amazing stories of those who “got out,” who “pulled themselves up by their boot straps,” this isn’t that story. This is the story of the many who are left behind. This is the story of those who can’t get out.Of course, Blaise makes decisions that I hat—and so do her friends. Of course, I wanted to knock “some sense” into them as I read, to scream at them to call the cops, to run away, to do something… but in all truth, why call the cops when you know they can’t help you? Why run when it will only show your weakness and land you a bullet in your back? Blaise has more sense than I ever would have in her shoes, and though the going is tough and she’s finds herself in a very precarious situation, she continues on as best as she can. And that is pure courage.Originally I didn’t want to pick up this novel. I was afraid it would focus on servitude sex and the downtrodden woman. But it doesn’t—Blaise isn’t raped and any mention of sex is more so glossed over. Instead, what this novel does do is show the very real truth about gang violence and the people who grow up surrounded by it. It shows the many dangers in life that a lot of us don’t even realize exist. And it breaks my heart, but this is one intense, powerful read if you really understand the truths behind it.

The Lure By sarah brown The Lure by Lynne Ewing is a contemporary book focusing on the initiation into and the life of belonging to a gang.Gritty and raw told through the eyes of Blaise, raised in a neighbourhood where most people are poor and the only answer for most teenagers is to join a gang, in Blaise's case she is being raised by her sick grandmother, money is very tight and so like her childhood friends Satch and Rico she decides to join their gang Core 9.Initial into the gang is to be beaten for 1 minute straight without fighting back, after successfully completing the beating Blaise feels like part of a family, but life in a gang is not as great as it appeared to be when she was on the outside looking in, but when Trek the leader of Core 9 tells her that she will be their lure (enticing opposing gang members, so that they let their guard down and subsequently get beaten up by Core 9 members) against her better judgement and without really being given a choice she accepts. But reality comes crashing down when someone she lured comes after her and results in the death of an innocent bystander, that Blaise comes to realise that this may not be the life that she wants after all, getting out is a lot harder than getting in, and when Trek sets Blaise, Satch and Rico up and turns on them it will end fatally for one of them. and will shock the remaining two into realising that they've got to take the chance and get out while they can.I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the insight into what it takes to not only join a gang but belong to one as well had me very intrigued and in places shocked that this does actually happen.A fast-paced, quick read that contemporary fans should devour.

It is called "Countenance of a Killer" by Darwil B. Haagen. The ending is phenomenal. The story development is unexpected. I am definitely re-reading this book. It is available on Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, Kindle and Univeristy of Waterloo Book store. No regrets adding this book to your collection.

With unexpected plot twists, an unconventional story, and characters that were simultaneously relatable yet dislike-able, I found myself turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next. I'm not ashamed to admit that I sat there and read this in one sitting. Buy this book if you're looking for a 'different' mystery novel, you won't be disappointed!

Warning: For Mature Adult Audiences. Contains language and actions some may deem offensive. Sexually explicit content. Ménage – MFM. Terrible events have Lizzie living in isolation. She finds the solitude better than dealing with the outside world and the troubles it seems to dump on her doorstep. That is until the day her childhood crushes come knocking. The thrill and love of life they offer has Lizzie hopeful. But she should have known by opening that door, the world would sneak in and try to take it all away from her—again. Grant and Richi have known since Lizzie was born that she would be a big part of their lives—just maybe not how big. When they find themselves in a position to save Lizzie from a threat, their hearts are threatened at the same time. Can they convince her that she needs them both? Or will circumstances from her past, take her out of their reach. Excerpt: "Goddamn, Grant. You lied. You said it was only you. I should have known." Now I'm even more conscious of what I'm wearing. "Did you really think I was going to let Grant come here without me? You must underestimate how much we both care about you," Richi says as he steps around me and walks in the house like he owns it. Arrg! "As you both can see, I'm fine. Now you can go. Don't let the door hit your asses on the way out." I may have just said the wrong thing at this moment. I'm not quite sure, you tell me. Richi stalks to me and lifts me off the floor. There I am, in this huge bear hug, my feet are at least two foot off the floor, and his face is mere inches from mine. I gulp. "Lizzie, I am not leaving here anytime soon. Deal with it. You have been cooped up in this fucking house for a year. Something has to give. You have people who care about you and you push them away. Well, we are pushing back now. I am pushing back. So get the fucking stick out of your ass and understand that we care what happens to you. We aren't going to let you drive us away and deal with all this shit on your own. You're strong, but not that strong. As you can see." He emphasizes with a tighter grip on my still dangling body. "I mean you are celebrating your birthday with who? Yourself? Don't push the only other people who love you away." He puts me down unceremoniously and walks to the front door, slamming it extremely loud on the way out. I wince and shiver at the same time. My body grows cold after he lets go but he's right, and I can't let my crazy body stop me from realizing I did push them away. But who wants overbearing men around when all you want to do is be alone? No one, that's who. All I can think of is chest pounding and the barking out of commands in order to make everything better. "Lizzie, don't worry about him, you know he'll be back. He…we just don't understand why you wouldn't let us help you through all this shit. That day made you a different person. One we don't particularly like. You feel guilty still, that's understandable, but it's not your fault. None of what happened that day was your fault. We know what that dipshit Kent did also. That's why you are putting all the blame on yourself. If you hadn't been with him, you would have been closer to your parents. Don't do that. We all know why you were with him. Were we happy? Not on your life. However, we didn't step in because shit just happens sometimes. But remember none of this was your fault. Now it's time to move on and start over. You have every opportunity to make a better life. Why not start now?" Even though he is absolutely right, I hate that he points it out. They did this to me all the time. That's why I don't want them around. They make me feel stupid for the way I think. I am far from incompetent. I just choose to be inapt at times. Maybe that is my problem. Something to think about when ‘attitude' and ‘muscles' are gone. "Fine. If I promise to start living, will you both go away?" I ask in a huff.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Okay By irishlace I really wanted to like this book more, but couldn't. I love the premise of the story. It started off great and I was excited about where this book would take me, then it stalled. I started finding Lizzie a little boring and whiny. Then the two men, Grant and Richi, again, to start, I was liking them, then they got a little boring. There was no real build up to the story. The characters felt flat to me, like they were the same person. The whole our parents were together and broke up,(why?- this was never made clear) so we are supposed to be together made me roll my eyes. The depth of the men's conviction that they were made to be together, had me waiting for the punchline that they were some kind of shifter and she was their mate. But that wasn't so. I could still see this being a good read, but it needs some work.

The story line had promise but the writing lacked depth as did the characters. The whole way through, as I continued to read, it frustrated me more and more with the stilted, jagged, oft times juvenile writing. Can we also say predictable, cliched dialog? It read like the most predictable of "bad romance" cliches that everyone makes fun of. Even the interpersonal dialog among the characters begged you to cry "please stop". Ugh! I don't think I will even try anything again from this author.

Taylor has come to Swain's Fancy to spend the summer with her father and his new wife, Sylvia, and her children, Nicole and Peter. She has to share a room with Nicole, who thinks Taylor is about as welcome as Lyme disease. But the stepsisters' enmity is soon eclipsed by strange goings-on in the house. What makes the bedroom so cold? Who is that person looking out the attic window? Sibling rivalry is pushed aside as Taylor, Nicole, Peter, and neighbor Cody join forces to solve a murder committed during the Civil War. As Kirkus Reviews said of The Haunting at Stratton Falls, here is another "thoroughly satisfying ghost story with just the right amounts of scariness, suspense, and danger . . ."

The Haunting of Swain's Fancy, by Brenda Seabrooke

From School Library Journal Grade 5-7-From the first moment 11-year-old Taylor sees the 18th-century house her father and his wife, Sylvia, have recently purchased in West Virginia, she feels the presence of all of its previous inhabitants. Her first night there, she sees two ghosts, a disembodied head outside the window of the bedroom she is sharing with her new stepsister, and a woman in a 19th-century dress opening and closing phantom drawers as if searching for something. Taylor discovers that the ghost head is actually a prank dreamed up by Nicole, who is not happy about sharing her room. She reasons that the other ghost was also somehow faked-until Nicole sees her, too. The two girls, along with Nicole's brother Peter and friend Cody, begin investigating the history of Swain's Fancy and discover a murder committed in the house during the Civil War. Two brothers, Jason and Jared Swain, one in the Union Army, the other the Confederate, were both in love with their cousin, Elizabeth. Jason was shot and murdered by Jared, who accused his brother of stealing the family's gold. Elizabeth was convinced Jason was innocent and searched the rest of her life for proof. The children find this evidence, all the while menaced by Jared's vengeful ghost, and the past is set to rest. This is a well-done, historical-mystery, ghost story with suspenseful pacing that will draw readers in. The added plot of adjusting to a new stepfamily is well integrated into the story.Terrie Dorio, Santa Monica Public Library, CACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gr. 4-6. Seabrooke ably combines a ghost story with stepsibling rivalry and a smattering of Civil War history in this well-crafted suspense story. Taylor, spending the summer with Dad's new family, is lonely in their pre-Civil War house in West Virginia. Standoffish Nicole doesn't want to be friends, and Peter, Dad, and Dad's wife, Sylvia, always seem busy. It isn't long, however, before Nicole and Taylor find a common cause: ghosts haunting their bedrooms. The girls then come up with some creative ways to solve the mystery, including holding a seance. Spats between the stepsiblings are realistically portrayed, and the girls' resolution to be friends despite their differences is satisfying without being too neat. Readers will sympathize with Taylor from the first, and even Nicole becomes more appealing as Taylor gets to know her. A good mix of fantasy and reality. About the Author Brenda Seabrooke graduated from Tulane University where she majored in history. She taught it briefly before turning to writing stories. "Not a big jump," she says, "because history is full of wonderful stories." She grew up reading every mystery she could find. "I loved them all. Once at my grandmother's for a weekend, I had nothing to read. In the hall bookcase I found treasure: the complete works of Edgar Allan Poe and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books. I read my way through them on visits." Now after she finishes writing for the day, she reads mysteries.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A cool Civil War mystery By Amazon Customer This is a cool mystery. I like that the Civil War ghost problem and the modern kids' problem are connected. The ghosts don't just haunt the house for no reason. This book has everything I like in a scary book - an old house, ghosts, mystery, a seance, funny things, kids that are real. The ending is great! Read this book for real goosebumps!

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Initial hostility between the new stepsisters changes By Midwest Book Review Taylor has come from another state to spend the summer with her father and his new wife and her children - but an empty spooky old house greets her and when the family does show up, it's with less than a display of family warmth. Initial hostility between the new stepsisters changes as both are confronted with a supernatural force which threatens each - building family feelings in the process.

However, when I bought the book nowhere in the item listing did it say unedited proof. It wasn't a final published copy, so there were mistakes in it which confused my daughter who was reading it for school. The product description could have been clearer.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. More than an autobiography By Sandy Bradley This book includes elements of memoir, travelogue, and philosophy in an engaging way. He begins with interesting autobiographical details from a lively and varied career, which include Coast Guard Officer, professor, lawyer, operations analyst, and factory manager. Upon retirement he and his wife began to travel and kept wonderful records which make it easy to picture the areas and scenery that they describe. It all leads to a thought-provoking chapter titled "What I learned," that asks to reader to contemplate a different and hopefully, better world.

A peek at his story By Mary C Hill I enjoyed reading about the career of my co-in-law and friend, Bob Pendleton, especially the earlier portion which contains an occasional ironic quip of humor and insight. I think Bob’s broad career helped him achieve the broader world view he often blogs about. I will say, though, I missed reading about some of the middle years familial touches that made him the good soul he is, and his sons the terrific men they are, today. I was delighted when the “I” became “we” and he tells of the journey on which he and Elsa, my other co-in-law and friend continue to this day.
