ndian or British? Is the memoir of Pat Cross written from the journal she had kept about her time in India in the late 1930s. Patricia Rikh, as she was then, spent three years living with her Indian father and his extended family when she was in her late teens. He was the son of the Rajah of Tajpur. Pat had lived all over Europe with her Irish mother and had always thought of herself as British, or possibly European, and therefore adjusting to her Indian heritage was a challenge . This is an evocative glimpse into a time long gone.

I intended to skim the memoirs of my friend's mother's two years spent in India just before the outbreak of the second world war. Of mixed race, her father was a Rajh, no less, and I was hooked from the first page. Fascinating to read such vivid descriptions, tinged with humour, evidence of the caste system and every turn and the fragility and relatively cheapness of life.I had no idea that my friend was related to a Rajh. I'm not sure whether I should give her a hug or saalam the next time we meet!

By Amazon Customer Pat Cross has written of a time just before WW Two when she was seventeen and visited India from her European environs. She has written so beautifully of her first-time meeting with her Indian father and the life lived so briefly with him and her Indian relations. He and her Irish mother were divorced before she could recall him. He was from the Indian upper class and the years she spent with him were filled with the life and many adventures she experienced while getting to know and love him. The story is filled with descriptions of India and Indian life and I've seldom read a more evocative and enjoyable yet poignant story. Highly recommend.
