A classic memoir of life on the western Montana frontier The author of this well known and well regarded first-hand account begins her story of army life as a young officer's wife on the western frontier with all the naivety and trepidation one might expect. She was married to an army officer of the 18th U. S Infantry, George Washington Grummond and their post was to be the far flung outpost of Fort Phil Kearney, Wyoming, which was soon to be the centre of the maelstrom which was 'Red Cloud's War.' Grummond was one of the ill-fated detachment who rode out of the fort to the 'Fetterman Massacre' of 1866 and thus, by disobeying orders, put himself into the history books as a participant in the worst disaster suffered by the U. S Army at the hands of the Plains Indian tribes until George Armstrong Custer-together with elements of the 7th Cavalry-was eradicated at Little Big Horn some 10 years later. Frances Grummond, as the author was at the time, was widowed and understandably distraught. She was comforted by the post commander's wife, Margaret Carrington who wrote, Ab-sa-ra-ka-Home of the Crows. Margaret Carrington died in 1870 and Mrs Grummond subsequently became the second wife of Colonel Henry B. Carrington. This book is an essential work on the Indian Wars of the mid-nineteenth century in America, it provides valuable insights into army life and also recounts a notable incident in American frontier history. Life of an Army wife By Judith Richards I purchased this book to give me some background of what life was like for army wives stationed out West and in this particularcase, Fort Phil Kearny. The author was the wife of Lt. Grummond that was killed in the Fetterman massacre and she speaks at lengthabout her arrival at the Fort, the times leading up to the massacre and what happened after.I was able to glean a lot of information about the happenings at the Fort as well as what travel was like for the women whoaccompanied their husbands to the isolated garrisons. Especially interesting is the discussion of winter travel.All in all, a good book that gives the reader a general idea of what life was like at an isolated army post. There is other materialcovering her trip from the East as well as extensive material about the events that came much later - after she left the post.

Higgins,III The 1860's were turbulent years throughout the west and the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming were no exception. Francis Carrington's reminisces of these times are essential to understanding not only army life on the frontier, but also the true facts of the horrid Fetterman Massacre of 1866.Venturing west as a young bride to Lt. George Grummond, she describes in detail the landscapes, people and day to day existence of trail life while on their way to establish Ft. Phil Kearney on the eastern flank of the Big Horn Mountains. The fort's purpose was to protect emigrants traveling to the gold fields of Montana.With the land initially promised to the Sioux in treaty, the government's newer policies of allowing a road and forts to be built through this region fueled acts of violence from the Sioux.Frances' husband Lt. Grummond, along with Lt. Colonel William Fetterman and a total of eighty-one men were led into ambush by the Sioux in December 1866 and all killed. The post commander, Colonel Henry Carrington, gave explicit orders which were disobeyed resulting in the slaughter of these men.An informative and expressive read which also upholds Colonel Carrington's command.
