Seventeen-year-old Melanie Kennicut is beautiful. Her entire life revolves around this beauty because her overly controlling mother has been dragging her to casting calls and auditions since she was four years old. According to Joanne Kennicut, Melanie was born to follow in her footsteps. But Melanie never wanted this life. When a freak car accident leaves her with facial lacerations that will require plastic surgery, she can't help but wonder if this is the answer to her prayers. For the first time in her life, she has a chance to live like a normal teenager‹at least for a little while‹away from the photo shoots and movie sets that have dominated her entire existence. But after Melanie allows her best friend to come to the house to see her, Joanne decides to hide her daughter in Montana for the remainder of the summer. There, Melanie won't be seen by anyone they know, and her face will heal in time for the scheduled surgery in late August. Joanne’s plan backfires, however, when Melanie meets Sam, a Native American boy hired by the home's owner to tend to the property. Sam is nothing like the Hollywood boys Melanie knows‹he¹s poor, his father's a drunk who possesses a bizarre gift inherited from a Kootenai Shaman, and his only brother disappeared into the mountains after the death of their mother eight years before. What transpires over a mere 36 hours after Sam and Melanie meet changes both of their lives in ways they never thought possible. USA Best Book Awards: Fiction: Young Adult, Finalist

Beautiful Girl: A Novel, by Fleur Philips

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Teen model and aspiring actress Melanie Kennicut is trapped in a life chosen for her by her overbearing and controlling mother. Joanne Kennicut isolates Melanie from anything, and anyone, that will not further her daughter's career. When a terrible accident disfigures Melanie's face, her mother whisks the teen off to Montana to hide until she can receive plastic surgery. While there, she is drawn to a local boy who maintains the grounds at the home where she is staying. Sam is completely different from anyone Melanie has met before, and a whirlwind romance ensues. However, their romance soon spins into an unpredictable storm, which leaves readers wondering if any of the characters will survive intact. The story has some interesting plot twists, however the characters lack depth. The pacing of the story is very uneven. At first, the narrative is steady, but then it slows down, making the fast-forward momentum of the last third feel even more jarring. It may interest teens who are looking for an action-filled love story or a light beach read. VERDICT An additional purchase for libraries looking to add to YA romance collections.—Ellen Fitzgerald, White Oak Library District, Lockport, IL

Review “This beautifully written book has strong characters women everywhere will relate to, and a huge twist that will leave you in disbelief. A fantastic coming-of-age story!” —Kristen Hunt, author of The Blonde Eskimo “Fleur Philip's Beautiful Girl gorgeously illustrates that beauty definitely isn't skin deep. Add to that a powerful first love and some meaningful self discovery, and this book will find it's way from the beach with you to a soft spot in your heart.”—Jessica Hickam, author of The Revealed“In turns heart-stopping and heartbreaking, but ultimately hopeful, Beautiful Girl is the powerful story of one girl's search for what each of us wants: to be seen, to be known, and to be loved for who we truly are.”—Erin McCahan, author of Love and Other Foreign Words“Philips writes with conviction, heart, and honesty. Her words slip off the page and into your soul, reminding you that everyone is fighting an inner battle that most people know nothing about.”—Jessica Stevens, author of Within Reach“Fleur Philips has written a poignant coming-of-age story of a young woman who sheds her masks and finds true love and her truer self. Romantic and compelling, Beautiful Girl reaffirms our ideals of the redemptive power of love.”—Leonard Chang, author of Triplines

This is because I felt no connection what so ever to the characters in the book and I found the storyline not that interesting. Even with the car crash I could not warm up to Melanie. Yes, she did turn more human after the accident but I did not feel the warmth about her. Plus her and Sam's romance to me felt too rushed. For example Melanie had no experience with boys yet she meets Sam and right away is willing to have sexual relations with him. Yes, this does happen all the time but if Melanie was trying to show that she had some brains about her than she was not showing them. For me this book was not a winner but I did see a little glimmer of potential with the author's writing that I may check something else out by the author.

I did like the message it sends that beauty comes from within and not from what we look like on the outside.I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

It's a quick read, I needed to turn the pages to find out what was going to happen in Melanie's future.Ms. Phillips writes with an ease of words not often found. Her main characters have their flaws exposed and she gives plenty of exposure to her secondary characters. There is some violence and sex in this book. I am letting my fourteen year old twin daughters read it, but they have a very mature reading level. One of my twins gave me her feedback and it was "two thumbs up" from her. She is an intense reader and when she reached the climax she gave me "the look" which told me she was happy with the turn the book took.I was given a copy of this book by Book Sparks as part of their Summer Reading Challenge in exchange for my honest review.

Jeremy Heere is your average high school dork. Day after day, he stares at beautiful Christine, the girl he can never have, and dryly notes the small humiliations that come his way. Until the day he learns about the "squip." A pill-sized supercomputer that you swallow, the squip is guaranteed to bring you whatever you most desire in life. By instructing him on everything from what to wear, to how to talk and walk, the squip transforms Jeremy from Supergeek to superchic.

Be More Chill, by Ned Vizzini

Amazon.com Review In a novel that could be described as a kinder, gentler version of M.T. Anderson's Feed, young author Ned Vizzini draws on the very recent recollections of his years at Stuyvesant High School to create a witty commentary on the annoying realities of teen social life.

Jeremy Heere is convinced that people are born Cool: "See, because being Cool is obviously the most important thing on earth…It's more important than getting a job, or having a girlfriend, or political power, or money, because all those things are predicated by Coolness." And he hasn't got it. Every day he yearns hopelessly for beautiful Christine. Then, one day he gets a squip--a tiny quantum supercomputer that looks like a little gray capsule and when swallowed becomes a voice in his head instructing him in the ways of Cool. Soon, every gril he admires is his--including Christine. But when the squip turns malevolent in its merciless pursuit of the goal, Jeremy begins to realize that Cool is not as cool as he thought it was. (ages 14 up) --Patty Campbell

From School Library Journal Grade 9 Up–This wacky, irreverent novel stars an uncouth, smart, nerdy, but sympathetic antihero, Jeremy Heere. The teen actually keeps Humiliations Sheets on which he tallies the number and types of affronts that he encounters in his daily life at his New Jersey high school and finds solace in the evenings viewing Internet porn. When the girl he secretly loves is cast opposite him in a school play, he decides to find a way to break the mold he's built around himself so that she will understand and reciprocate his admiration. Buying an extreme bit of illegal nanotechnology in the back room of a Payless shoe store, Jeremy swallows the "squip," which embeds itself in his brain and advises him on all the cool things to say and do to impress Christine. Vizzini has devised a hilarious alternate reality, very close to the one available to Jeremy's real peers–Eminem is a pop-culture presence (although he has recently died in this world). The squip malfunctions when Jeremy takes Ecstasy (not only miscuing Jeremy but also defaulting to Spanish), and so on. There are genuine and serious issues of morality folded into this story, including Jeremy's dilemma of how to make himself both attractive and sincere in Christine's perception. Like Janet Tashjian's The Gospel According to Larry (Holt, 2001), this novel has substance as well as flash, and lots of appeal to bright teens. Although it is literary and funny, the blatant sexual themes and use of profanity may limit its acceptability in schools.–Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist Gr. 9-12. Jeremy Heere, a classic high-school dork, transforms himself into one of the social elite by swallowing a "squip," a supercomputer in pill form that communicates directly with his brain. The squip tells him what to say and how to act, and soon he is hanging with the popular crowd and getting physical with the "hottest" girls. But the squip's technology is imperfect and leads Jeremy disastrously astray in extremely public circumstances. Vizzini, like Jonah Black in the Black Book series, focuses on the plight of the lovesick nerd and also employs a Web spin-off (Google squip and see what emerges). Note that masturbation is very directly addressed, in bitingly funny terms, and both sex and substance abuse occur but not in a flattering light. Readers will identify and groan with embarrassment for Jeremy, whose candidly uncool voice rings very true. Debbie CartonCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. The drawbacks of technology By Teen Reads Hearing voices is never a good thing, unless the voices are coming from your squip. No, not script --- squip. Google "squip" and you'll come up with a boring kill-the-space-aliens game and some information about a supercomputer the size of an aspirin, currently illegal to use. Swallow the computer and become cool. Get all the girls, or guys. Dress sharp. Learn to flirt and drive, and generally be more chill.Jeremy Heere, hopeless nerd, wants to date beautiful Christine Caniglia. He knows she's way out of his league, until he acquires a squip, which guides him through a physical and mental transformation. Following the squip's instructions on how to dress, speak, kiss, act and exercise, Jeremy rises above his geek status and becomes --- dare he say it --- popular. This, of course, comes with a few problems. Computers, for all their quantum mechanics, can't quite get the hang of human emotions, like love and friendship. They can't understand why Jeremy wants to take his geeky best friend Michael to a party featuring the hottest girls in school. And while they may tell Jeremy what to say to Christine, they can only calculate so many possible outcomes of the conversation. Jeremy's squip eventually leads him to disaster, and he has to figure out what he's going to do all on his own.Sarcastic, sexy (well, Jeremy wishes there was sex) and hilarious, this thought-provoking book is not to be missed by anyone who has ever wanted the impossible. The larger-than-life characters fit in perfectly with the idea of a pill-sized computer running Jeremy's life at Leni Lenape High School. This book, however, is far from fluffy. It raises some important questions as to how far one person will go to impress another and the depth of honesty needed in human relationships. --- Reviewed by Carlie Webber

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. a dynamic novel! By Felicia Sullivan Reviewed by Steve Hansen for Small Spiral NotebookSquip is the hook; the dynamo that powers Be More Chill. It's what separates Ned Vizzini's tale of dork-cum-cool guy from your other, similar, young adult fare.Jeremy Heere compounds his dorkdom by documenting each slight onto forms he's coined 'Humiliation Sheets,' ticking off every snicker, snotty comment and a number of other embarrassments he suffers daily at the hands of his peers. No explanation is given for the purpose of these sheets other than to serve as some kind of proof of their originator's dillweed-ness. They seem to be an adolescent substitute, of sorts, for self-flagellation. Heere is a loser, indeed.Enter the aforementioned 'squip' (a nanocomputer perched in the brain of anyone who takes the 'magic' pill), and Jeremy goes from social pariah to student body messiah. He ascends the social strata all the way to the pinnacle of cool, thanks to his execution of the instructions given him by the voice inside his head. His squip directs him to drop his dearest, best friend Michael for political expediency's sake (how can he remain friends with somebody now below his modicum of cool?), and advises Michael to hook up with the popular chicks in order to send Christine, the girl he really likes, into a jealous tizzy. Is this computer thing Machiavellian or what? The question is can Jeremy live with himself now that he's gone from likable geek to scheming ass? This novel will appeal most to those still in high school or a few years removed, thus its 'Young Adult' designation. Not to say Vizzini's writing doesn't have some universal appeal, it's just that high school 'problems' are so petty, insubstantial and contrived to anybody who's had to survive for a sustained amount of time in the real world. The tragedies of acne or someone's refusal to return a greeting in the hall seems pretty small when weighed against a home foreclosure are the scourge of a bad credit rating. That said the squip gimmick has landed Vizzini's book a movie deal. And as you read Be More Chill, you may find yourself wondering if this wasn't the author's (perhaps unconscious) intention all along. What Hollywood executive could turn down American Pie with a Keanu Reeve's voiceover? Whether on the page or the silver screen, Be More Chill will entertain high school kids nationwide, and, no doubt, a few of their parents.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An honest book By Mina Helsing I just wanted to write to say that I just finished Be More Chill and lovedit. I really liked how you made Jeremy's character easy to relate to andhave him do stuff that most of us have done at least once in our lifetimes.I also liked the ending and how you didn't conclude everything. I just gotmy wisdom teeth out on monday, and I can honestly say that without that bookI would have been a lot more miserable. It helped me through my boring daysof just sitting around. There were many nights where I told myself "Ok, I amonly going to read these 4 chapters," but I'd soon find myself on the tenthchapter instead. So, thank you for writing a book that is not only enjoyablebut extremely truthful!

By All my friends are writers The amazing collection of cheesecake recipes leaves one wondering two things: WHERE do I start - which one sounds like the first one to make, andHOW much more am I going to love being in the kitchen making them? From no-bakes to chocolates; from fruit filled to quick and easy. It is clear there is a cheesecake in the book for just about everyone. The ingredient lists look small and the utensils and steps simple. I am ready to go. Thanks for the great collection!

We tried the first recipe, the Cookies and Cream, and we loved it. I can’t wait for my wife to make the other cakes. I know those cakes are yummy and my mouth is drooling right now by just thinking about them. The cookbook itself is great. Could have been better if there are pictures of the cheesecakes. But I’m still giving it 5 stars because my wife is happy to have the recipes and they are easy to follow. Good job!

Be good to your family and cook stuff from this book. If you love them, you'll buy it and throw all your other books away. If you don't, your family will hate you and you will die alone. Kidding. Chef Jeff is a gentleman and a hell of a chef. Thanks for putting your knowledge in black and white for us lay people.

Can't wait to wade into the recipes; solid with those little touches that you need if you aren't Jewish or Italian but LOVE the genre. Might learn to make a good Italian gravy and Jewish chicken soup yet!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. love of family By Marijoyce Ryan This book is full of love--love of food, love of family, love of laughter and love of life. "Chef Jeff" makes cooking easy--especially for those of us who approach "old world" recipes with trepidation out of fear of getting it right. My husband and I love the stories--especially "The Dress." I ordered several copies to share with family, friends and clients. We have been waiting for this book........thank you, Jeff, for sharing your luscious recipes with the world!!! To use your words, you are a "gem."

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. This is one of my very favorite comics that is currently being published! By Matt Anderson Collects Silver Surfer (2014) issues #6-10This is one of my very favorite comics that is currently being published. I make a point to purchase each issue every month. Below I will give some spoiler-filled thoughts, but first I'll go over a general premise for this book.First of all, readers will see on the cover that Galactus appears in this collection. Surfer and Galactus have an interesting dynamic because of the work they used to do together, and the threat that Dawn might learn about Surfer's dark past looms over these issues. This collection also introduces a new villain to Surfer's rogues gallery - Warrior Zero.Dan Slott continues to write great characters, and it is surprisingly how much emotion he is able to make Toomie display. I'm still in awe of the way that Slott made a character out of the surf board. The personality of Toomie continues to develop in these pages.I can't stop proclaiming how awesome Michael and Laura Allred are on this book. Their artwork, combined with Slott's writing, makes this a must-read for me.ISSUE-BY-ISSUE SPOILER-FILLED THOUGHTS:Silver Surfer Issue #6: The actually story probably deserves a 3-star rating, but I'll give this a 4-star rating because I really like how it is doing 1-issue stories (just like the old days). Plus, the story is full of fun action and interesting, new characters. I immediately liked the new villain Warrior Zero. I think he will be a fun addition to the Marvel Universe. Dawn and Norrin together is a great match. (4 stars)Silver Surfer Issue #7: Surfer, Dawn, and Toomie travel to the edge of the universe. Farther than Surfer has ever gone. Then, Dawn gets abducted. The issue then does something fun where we see flashbacks of adventures Surfer and Dawn have had together that we never saw in the comics. It helps establish that they have been developing a friendship over a long time. We also get the origin story on Dawn’s dot attire. If it hadn’t happened already, this is the issue where Norrin Radd starts to realize that he has romantic feelings for Dawn, and by the end of the issue (after he rescues her from another danger and gives her a silver ring that is a piece of himself so that they can always find each other) she asks him for a DTR. (5 stars)Silver Surfer #8: This is the issue where Dawn finds out that Surfer was responsible for the death of trillions as a herald for Galactus. She didn’t take it well, and Galactus appears on the final page (it appears he has been searching for the Surfer. The dialogue is often outlandish in this book, but in a really good way. They almost sound childlike at times. That works when everyone is happy and getting along, but when Norrin and Dawn aren’t getting along, this style of dialogue doesn’t work quite as well. I want to say this about every issue, but don’t always take the time to say it, so I will end on a good note here. The artwork is perfect. I love it. (3.5 stars because I want them to be getting along)Silver Surfer #9: Another fun issue. Surfer gives Dawn the full story on his days as Galactus’ herald. She is still mad after hearing his side of the story, but she starts to warm to him after Norrin attempts to stop Galactus himself. He seemingly fails, and as Norrin is on the brink of death, Dawn looks on in horror. Surfer is unable to help this planet now, and Galactus has arrived. To be continued! (4 stars)Silver Surfer #10: Great issue, in both story and artwork. Dawn makes an incredibly noble sacrifice, and offers to be Galactus’ new herald in order to save the doomed planet. Surfer is still alive and tries to stop Galactus, but is unable to do so. He whispers “I love you” to Dawn as she is being given the powers cosmic. Just then, the people of Newhaven make a different deal with Galactus, offering up their planet in exchange for Dawn. They all escape on escape pods, and Galactus eats the planet. Surfer pledges to now be their herald and find them a new planet, a paradise, for all of these survivors to live on. Dawn’s body is tested, and found to be completely absent of cosmic energy. She is fully human again, but seriously traumatized. (4.5 stars)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A light Allred Surfer, but also some deep questions! By Surferofromantica While it's not clearly labelled as such on the cover, this is the second volume of collected tales of Michael Allred's take on the Silver Surfer, collecting Issues #6-#10, originally released in 2014. At this point, the Surfer's sidekick Dawn Greenwood is established, and we see the budding of a platonic romance happening, with all of its ups and downs. Weird space Subway madness (SubSpace), as Dawn explains bodily functions to the Surfer (food, toilet, etc), leading to ice cream adventures on Planet Prime, where everyone is perfect at whatever it is they do. Here, the world is light and simple, at least for now, with a cool new race of aliens, and also a bit of blazing fisticuffs, pitting the power cosmic versus the gravity of an entire planet! Interesting travels into a black void, where our heroes are very nearly trapped (and the story behind Dawn's polka-dot dress!) that includes flashbacks from a lonely Surfer to earlier adventures with Dawn. We get the concept of Norrin Radd "silvering down", which becomes important when he comes to a hidden planet where survivors of worlds lost to Galactus, the World Devourer, to try to preserve their races. The story is a deep one, filled with many questions of morals, that leads through Issues #8, #9 and #10, and beyond, with some nifty surprise endings along the way! Get it!!

By Drown Hollum Silver Surfer continues to be such a blast, with laugh out loud humor bursting from every page. Slott and the Allreds have a blast with this book, presenting new and weird ideas every step of the way, choosing a lighter episodic approach for each issue. The result is always fun, never intimidating, and full of heart and great characters. Silver Surfer manages to be a forward thinking sci-fi book, while simultaneously evoking classic Lee and Kirby stories. It's a work of art, and a wonderful book that everyone should be reading.

By SeattleReader This was an intriguing collection of erotic short stories, all with some kind of horror theme. Perfect for a spooky winter night! As with all multi-author anthologies, not every story did it for me. Some of them made me go "meh;" others had me going "eeew!" But the majority were soundly satisfying, with that extra frisson of horror to boot.A few stories stood out as favorites: "Ghosts Have Pride" was thoughtful and moving; "Mesmerized" was super-hot; "Pan's Playground" almost made me miss my bus stop; and "Don't Lose Your Head" was superbly plotted, darkly erotic, psycho-thriller madness. In addition, the personal touch of author Q&A at the end of each story made it that much more enjoyable to read, and easy to find more from your favorites. This is an anthology worth reading (especially after midnight....)

Great way to sample talented writers By Eleemosynary This collection of erotica is an interesting mix of styles with the commonality of paranormal or supernatural elements, sometimes veering toward horror. I would consider only the first two stories to be romantic. All the offerings were well-crafted, and I enjoyed learning a little about the authors of each story. It's certainly a wonderful way to sample the work of some of the most gifted modern erotica writers in the indie author world. If you're in the mood for some spookiness or violence in your erotica, then this is the book for you.

You can't tell which emotion is causing the shivers. That's why I was so curious to read this horror/suspense book from writers who specialized in Erotica. Each story was entertaining in it's own way. Not really surprising. To write erotica, a writer needs to have a vivid imagination. Horror is just a simple step in another direction. If you want to have a fun evening, get a copy of this book.

Gilbert While it took the book a little while to get going, once it did I almost couldn't stop reading... In fact, during the first half of the book I kept glancing down to see my progress, then between 1/2 to 3/4 of the book, I stopped looking down. I was shocked when the book ended, actually...The only item that I could say the book lacked was a general timeline. The "flashback" scenes never really stated, other than expressing certain character's ages, that it was before the main part of the book, so you had to infer certain parts were, indeed, flashbacks. There were minor typos here and there, but nothing that made the book unreadable...I have to agree that I wished a second book was coming out soon. I will be looking forward to it, if it ever does...

Did the waiter in Rome sneer when you asked for butter for the bread or for a cappuccino after dinner? Did your Venetian grandmother slap your hand when you reached for the Parmesan cheese to sprinkle on her spaghetti alle vongole? Did the Florentine guest in your home turn pale when offered leftover pizza for breakfast? Did the fruit and vegetable vendor at the Mercato Centrale yell at you when you checked out the ripeness of his peaches or scooped up a handful of cherries? In Italy, they love making rules, although they seem to obey very few. When it comes to the national cuisine, however, the Italian Food Rules may as well be carved in marble. They will not change and are strictly followed. Visitors to Italy violate them at their peril. When in Italy, enjoy being Italian for a few days, weeks or months, by learning the Italian Food Rules, taking them to heart, and obeying each and every one of them. Italian Food Rules, by Ann Reavis

Review "Essential!"I bought this book when it first came out, but it was still two years too late! I wish it had been out when I first moved to Italy. Ann Reavis writes in a way that the food rules are fun to know. She also provides clarity of the customs and history behind each one. Having lived in Italy for fifteen years, Ann's writing is an authentic and accurate take on the markets, homes and restaurants here. If you are planning to visit, live or just enjoy Italy, this is an essential read! -- L. Condie (BetterWayToItaly.com)

About the Author Five years used to be Ann Reavis' attention span for any career. She's been a lawyer, a nurse, a presidential appointee in a federal agency, a tour guide and a freelance writer. She's lived in New Mexico, Texas, California (San Francisco Bay Area), Michigan and Washington, DC. But seventeen years ago Ann fell in love with Italy and has been traveling to and from Florence every since. She shares her thoughts on Florence, Tuscany, and all things Italian in a travel and food blog - TuscanTraveler.com.

The author tells you what to expect in cafes, restaurants and food shops. I have traveled to Italy many times, and thought I knew the food rules, but I learned a lot from this book. I highly recommend it to anyone planning a trip to Italy or to anyone curious about Italian food customs. Well written, informative and entertaining.

Now you'll never take a misstep when ordering food in Italy By KimGM If you're like me and you love all things Italian, then you need to read Italian Food Rules. Author Ann Reavis presents everything you need to know about how Italians view and eat food, so you'll never have to worry about culinary blunders. Without ever sounding condescending or old-fashioned, she fills us in on the do's and don't's of navigating the Italian culinary landscape and clues us in on the rules we've all broken at one time or another. This book is the ideal gift for friends and family who may be visiting Italy for the first time, or for the Italophile in your life.

What a lucky break for us! She was very friendly and helpful and assured us we could order a "light dinner." As we ate we talked about food, of course, and learned a great deal about dining in Italy. Once back home, we ordered her book and discovered even more useful tips along with the history/reasoning behind many of the "food rules." This is a very useful, informative pre-trip read for anyone traveling to Italy.

Sticky or glutinous rice is typically used in Southeast Asian cuisine. It lacks a kind of starch that other types of rice do have, and thus it has that sticky texture. This stickiness makes this rice a very versatile and fun ingredient to use in all sorts of things. Sticky rice can be either boiled or steamed, and as such it is used in preparing snacks or appetizers, deliciously sweet desserts, or is nicely paired with some sautéed vegetables, or marinated meat to make a hearty and flavorful lunch or dinner. In Japan they love using glutinous rice to make sweets including the well-known Japanese mochi which is a rice cake made of glutinous rice flour. In China it’s also used in many dim sum dishes. It’s so easy to work with, you can easily shape a ball of sticky rice and stuff it with all sorts of things. As you can see, there’s a lot you can do with sticky rice, and these recipes are some of the very best to help you prepare the most delicious sticky rice creations. So go get to it and get sticky! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Tags: sticky rice recipes, sticky rice cookbook, sticky rice recipe book, sticky rice cooking book, cooking with sticky rice, sticky rice desserts, sticky rice sweets, glutinous rice recipes, glutinous rice cookbook, glutinous rice recipe book, glutinous rice cooking book, cooking with glutinous rice, glutinous rice desserts, glutinous rice sweets. asian recipes, asian cookbook, japanese recipes.

It's over. Dean, Alex, and the other survivors of the Monument 14 have escaped the disaster zone and made it to the safety of a Canadian refugee camp. Some of the kids have been reunited with their families, and everyone is making tentative plans for the future. And then, Niko learns that his lost love, Josie, has survived!

Or is it? For Josie, separated from the group and presumed dead, life has gone from bad to worse. Trapped in a terrible prison camp with other exposed O's and traumatized by her experiences, she has given up all hope of rescue. Meanwhile, scared by the government's unusual interest in her pregnancy, Astrid―along with her two protectors, Dean and Jake―joins Niko on his desperate quest to be reunited with Josie.

In Monument 14: Savage Drift, the stunningly fierce conclusion to the Monument 14 trilogy, author Emmy Laybourne ups the stakes even higher for a group of kids who have continually survived the unthinkable. Can they do so one last time?

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Fitting End to an Amazing Series! By Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf The Good:-I loved getting both Dean and Josie’s perspectives with the dual POV in Savage Drift.-The development of Josie’s character in this conclusion to the trilogy amazed me. She’s struggling between what she was, what she thinks she is, and what she has the potential to become. (And to be honest: in a way aren’t we all)-Secondary characters again become small scene stealers…especially Mario.-The strength of friendship and family (even the Monument 14 redefined version) is inspiring-As with the previous books in this series, the writing style and pacing are spot on…I could not put this one down despite my desire to savor the conclusion-I was fascinated by the exploration of the long term effects of the chemical leak and how the governments were dealing with the falloutThe Not So Good:-I didn’t feel the same level of emotional intensity in Savage Drift that I did in the 1st two books in the series.-The last third of the book felt just a tad contrived, things were perhaps a bit too easy and the loose ends wrapped up faster than I’d have thought possible.Final Thoughts:I have so much love for this series! Emmy Laybourne paints a frighteningly realistic portrait of ordinary teens coming of age during an extraordinary time. The details and worldbuilding leave nothing to be desired and as I’ve long declared – the highlight of this series is the character development at which this author excels. Despite the fact that it didn’t end as strongly as I might have hoped, I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this series to all lovers of YA Fiction.I’m so going to miss these kids!Note: Review copy rcvd from Publisher, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

OMG - so exciting and a perfect conclusion By Mary Bookhounds MY THOUGHTS: ABSOLUTELY LOVED ITDean, Alex and the younger kids have been safe at the camp near Vancouver, but they still want to find Josie after Niko discovers that she is still alive. Astrid is experiencing difficulties in her pregnancy but fears going to the doctor there since she has heard rumors of pregnant girls just disappearing. To save Astrid from medical experimentation, the boys devise a plan and with the help of the twins' father, the escape the camp and venture back into the states.I love that the story alternates between the different points of view of each character and Josie, in her exile as a type O monster, shows that her compassion goes beyond being a prisoner in a sea of monsters. The chemicals have morphed into a dust cloud that drifts into areas that weren't previously effected. As Jake, Astrid and Dean travel south to reach safety for the baby, Niko sets off on his own to find Josie. This part of the story becomes extremely exciting as you wonder if the group will survive the chemicals and circumstances to save Josie.Rarely do I get an ending that I wanted but still was a bit surprised at how it ended. That is exactly what happened to me in this conclusion of the Monument 14 series. The whole cast of characters are so accessible and it is heartening that these teens try to do what is right. Fans of dystopian stories are going to enjoy this one immensely. You do need to read the first two books in the series since each builds on the other. Parents: There is some violence, alcohol abuse and minor sexual situations.

Strong, gripping, and utterly predictable in the best way By Quest4GoodWriting This book was SO predictable.I predicted a tense, tight plot: bingo!I predicted that it'd be a page-turner: check!I predicted that strong characters would steal my heart: tada! Are there no dull boring plot-writers left in this world? *Sigh* I suppose I will have to succumb to the mind-blowing, gut-wrenching aftermath of reading a fantastic book. My emotions are in upheaval. If you haven't figured it out yet, I loved Savage Drift. It was just as strong as the first two M14 books and I expected nothing less from Laybourne. This time, we followed Dean and Josie's points of view (POVs.) At first I was hesitant entering Josie's head. I wasn't sure how it would fit with my current view of her. But it worked. In fact, it worked really well. I never once, in all three books or POVs, got confused as to who's head we were in. That's tough to pull off with first-person.Josie's story broke my heart. At one point, a character refers to the "O Camps" as a concentration camp, and that's almost what it was like. Her struggles with figuring out who she was internally -- monster or human -- were realistic and bittersweet. I especially loved how she saw God work. She kept praying and praying for a sign that she should end her life. Almost wanting confirmation that it was okay for her to give up and die. Finally, frustrated with His silence, she prayed for a sign that she shouldn't end her life. A sign that she should keep fighting. And that's when He answered. It was sweet. It was perfect. And it completely fit.Dean's POV was also gripping, even though we've been with him through all three books. A favorite part about Savage Drift was watching him grow up. Dean became such a leader in this book, which was a true miracle when you think back to who he'd been at the start of this whole story.Okay, we've established the characters are strong. Now, what about the plot? Weren't we all happy and safe at the end of book two?Well, not all of us. Josie! We had to rescue Josie! Not just that, but Astrid's about to pop out a baby and that's a scary thing for a seventeen-year-old to handle, especially when the government is kidnapping pregnant women.I never got bored with this book. I read it in a day. I admit, when I first picked it up I thought it would be hard to make the plot as tight or interesting as the first two. But Savage Drift gets into the government's reaction to all the chaos. What are they doing about it? What are they hiding? And what are all these experiments they keep stealing people for?CONS:Please keep in mind that these cons are based on my subjectivity and my preferences. I share them in the hopes that they will help other readers with similar interests know what to expect. There was some violence I could have done without. You know, ripping out guts by the handful and repetitive stabbing. That sort of thing. Also, certain steps of intimacy bother me in YA books. A couple has sex, but the writing is not gratuitous. I just don't like the message that sixteen-year-olds should sleep together if they're in love.Overall, the book was fantastic. The entire series has left me impressed. And what a sweet ending! I won't give anything away, but it concluded everything that needed to be concluded and left me sad to say goodbye, but fully satisfied. I recommend it for older teens and up.I rate this a four star mostly because I'm a pretty tight stickler with that five-star rating. A five-star book needs to blow my mind in ten million different directions and then stick with me forever. Savage Drift just blew it in one million. ;) If Amazon had half star ratings, I'd give it a 4.5
