I've spent my life breathing because of her. She's in my blood, my cells, my DNA. Nothing will stop me from claiming her. Not my pedo father, or her whore of a mother, not their sick employers. Me and my brothers will have waited long enough. Pris Ever since I was four, Cogan has been my world. He's never let anything of our sick parents touch me. Ride on. Ride on. HARTE: After a world-changing run-in with the guy I thought was my father, I went on the road to find myself. I patched over to The Bent Zealots MC, an out-and-proud club on the Colorado River. A cock virgin, I raced to experience all I could, eagerly sniffing every nook and cranny, a whole new existence offered up by Grindr. But when Ormond Tangier was assaulted by a rival club, I quickly got down to brass tacks, to show my new brothers I was all business. Too bad that business involves Bond Blackburn, jailbird brother of our Prez, Turk. That guy is so far in denial he’s practically Egyptian. But he even he can’t deny what I saw with my own eyes at the gay club. Sure, I was on my knees paying homage to a Daddy Dom, but Bond can’t pretend he wasn’t getting some oral praise as well. And now they’re telling me I have to work with this hypocrite? BOND: This club is a fucking joke. How’s a man supposed to make a new start after the joint? First, my own brother forced me to prospect. I’m supposed to labor in a noxious sweatshop making product for their pot dispensary. And I have to sneak downtown if I want some halfway decent head, because I don’t even want my gay so-called brothers knowing about my shameful hobby. Now we’re reaching out to the cops to even the score with those Hellfire Nuts who abused Ormond. And that delicious Harte Saxonberg is getting my goat, so by-the-book, such a bleeding heart. I just want to strangle him—or fuck him. HARTE: I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place. Bond Blackburn kisses me, then punches me. Fucks me, then ignores me. He’s got me so upside-down I’ve lost the clarity I had a week ago when I rode west. Ride west, young man. I could be a steam train if I could just lay down my tracks. But the only name I’m calling out is that sexy convict’s. Ride on. Ride on. Publisher’s warning: This book is not for the faint of heart. It contains scenes of gay sex, public play, exhibitionism, transsexual issues, illegal doings, vaguely legal marijuana operations, and violence against men. It’s a full-length novel of 60,000 words rated 18+ due to possible triggers. There are no cheating or cliffhangers, and HEAs for all.

A Lone Stranger (gay biker MC erotic romance) (The Bent Zealots MC Book 3), by Layla Wolfe

Review

  • "I loved seeing Bond grow and develop over the course of the story, too.  He was in such denial of who he was.  He was firmly planted on the banks of that River in Egypt.  There was a completely epic use of a selfie stick.  I was laughing hysterically." ~ Molly Lolly, Reader, Reviewer, Lover of Words
  • "I really did enjoy this story, and how Bond's denial at his sexuality was portrayed. But even though he was in denial he also knew that his reactions towards Harte weren't nothing, and that it was all to do with Harte as a person, not Harte being a man. It had angst, passion, and some seriously smoldering sexy scenes too." ~ Booklover, One Click Aholics Book Group
  • "A Lone Stranger is the 3rd book in The Bent Zealots MC series and I think each of these books have just gotten BETTER & BETTER! A Lone Stranger is my favorite so far. This book is HOT, HOT, HOT!" ~ Tanya, Tasty Wordgasms
  • "What emerges is a story that, above all, celebrates self-acceptance and awareness, showing the power of friendship and love in making things better than they were. Foul language, often rough and raw emotions and plenty of balance checks to be sure no-one is believing the less than truthful utterances, these characters are real, honest and completely lovable. Eventually."  ~ Gaele, I am, Indeed
  • "Without spoiling the book, I will say Harte and Bond want to be out and proud." ~ Marinieves, Bike Book Reviews
  • "These guys don't mess around they are very unique toward each other. This series rocks! Can't wait to read more from Layla Wolfe." ~ Alison, Obsessed by Books

From the Author "A LONE STRANGER far exceeded expectations that were so rooted in thinking that this would be yet other emotionless sexy read. FAR FAR FARRR from it!! I couldn't get enough and whether I was laughing, crying or being angry with them together, this is definitely a story that will stay with me for a little while longer than I ever expected." ~ Jelena, Heartbeats Between Words

Ever since readings Sax's story and learning about his son, I couldn't wait to read Harte's story. He is newly out of the closet and and hoping to have a great life but he can't since he is still hurting from his 'father' betrayal on the club. His new life is to leave the Boners to become a Zealots. I dont remember if I read about Turks brother before in either of the Boners early storylines or in his own one but we see Turks jailed brother needing a place to be for is parole, talk about a confused man. He thought that since his brother was Prez that he can be veep automatically then knock his brother down, he was dreaming big to damn fast but was funny to see him put in his place as a prospect. Another rival club is at it again and poor Ormond was at the receiving end of their hate and only a few people know and started a mini feud but we now has even a very disgusting perverted cop getting working with the rivals and is pissed off Ormond is off the market. There will be denial, confusion, newcomer in the wrong body, revenge, and so much most just hold on to your saddle for the intense ride of these club brothers, yes twinkletoes is in most of this story for all his fans, even throwing his laptop onto a bashing.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. awesome book By alison I love this series. Its fun and an enjoyable read. I really have enjoyed reading this series of The Bent Zealots MC. Its dark, gritty and sexy. This is the third book in this series. I really liked the characters of Bond and Harte they were both very interesting and rough they both came from different situations. Bond is the brother of Turk who is the Pres of The Bent Zealots. Bond is starting out fresh and thinks the club is a joke at first until he meets Bond. Harte is on a mission to try and find out who he is and which way he should go. These guys don't mess around they are very unique toward each other. This series rocks! Can't wait to read more from Layla Wolfe.

You keep looking knowing you may discover something you should not have but you keep looking because you just have to know? That’s what The Bent Zealots MC series is turning into for me. Still unsure if that’s a good or a bad thing but I know my curiosity keeps me coming back for more. A Lone Stranger is the latest entry to this gay MC series.ARGH! I want to take the two main characters and shake them. Let’s start with Harte. He’s a hard character to not like. He has a big heart (no pun intended) and seriously why he is in a MC. He’s out and proud and is trying his best to lose his gay virginity. He I laughed quite a bit over his thoughts and antics. On the flip side his enthusiasm sometime is too much. Like a puppy that pees when the doorbell rings…and it’s Halloween. Bond (the hypocrite!) on the other hand was one giant irritant to me. Screaming he’s not gay one minute and the next thing you know he’s in a truck stop getting a ‘impromptu knob job’. Both have family issues they are dealing with. Both want to join up with the Zealots although Harte doesn’t have to start at the bottom as a Prospect, which irks Bond off to no end. Yes, I want to shack them but they are obviously perfect for each other.Their ‘courtship’ aside, A Lone Stranger made for entertaining reading. Their out to get revenge on Ormond attacker before Anson finds out. Along for the ride is Twinkletoes, who feels very much a straight man to the craziness Bond and Harte find themselves in. Still a lot of harsh, vulgar language and violence to be had. In addition, let’s not forget the endless amounts of metaphors spouted. Sometimes I wasn’t too sure if I was supposed to take the whole book seriously of was it all meant to be tongue in cheek either way, Layla Wolfe’s A Lone Stranger made for a interesting read.I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.Stars – 3.5, Flames – 4.5

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Young Love at its Best By JC What can I say? The third volume of Love at Fourteen continues its amazing story of young romance. What makes this series so impressive is how easily readers will empathize with the characters. And by the third volume, the cast of characters has grown to a point where you'll have no trouble picking out both your favorite person and your favorite budding relationship. After the events in the last volume, there's now tension between the boys and girls of class 2-B. Kanata and Kazuki who step in trying to mediate the situation actually get sucked into it themselves. This results in the couple getting into their first fight ever with delightful consequences (at least to us readers). While this arc isn't necessarily one of my favorites due to its reliance on classic romcom tropes of misunderstandings driving the conflict, the arc does contain some of the author's best drawings on the series yet. I'll try not to reveal too much, but let's just say the characters fantasize about their love interests in school play costumes and man oh man is it stunning. While Yen Press's summary advertises Kanata and Kazuki's fight as the main story for this volume, thankfully there's plenty more story to read including Kanata's first experience with makeup and a meaty arc between Nagai and Hinohara-sensei where Nagai questions whether or not Hinohara cares about him. This was definitely my favorite part of the book and as you can probably guess, my favorite couple. One last thing that must be said is Aoi Shiki wins this volume's contest of best character. Ironically, while I like her the least of the main cast, she is arguably the most interesting because of her porcupine-like personality and numerous flaws. She also has the biggest uphill challenge in her love life on two fronts, the first being that she's in love with a girl and the second being that she knows her crush loves someone else. You're going to see Aoi in this volume really struggle between being aggressive in her pursuit of love and doing what is right for her crush. When you see the results of her efforts, your heart is going to ache for her.Yen Press has done a great job with the series. I can happily report that the translation is awesome, and quality of the book is just stellar. The volume contains a few gorgeous, glossy-colored pages and an afterwards from the author. While I can't wait for the next volume, there's definitely more than enough content here that will tide me over before September's release.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Always a delight By Jude ~4/5I love how realistic this series is. It’s mature, in the way that it handles first love, and the way they’re mature characters, while insecure. The way the characters look at each other, their feelings develop, is subtle and slow, but at a steady, realistic pace.Kanata and Kazuki have a fight, without meaning to or understanding how it happened. They try keeping up their good faces in front of their classmates. And then they make up, and it’s shy and sweet. They go out together, try to do things to impress each other. Kanata tries lip gloss, and wants Kazuki to notice. Then there’s Nagai, who tends to show anger when he gets attention. I know some people will be uncomfortable with his developing relationship with their teacher, but I’m not. Maybe I should be, given I’m not sure how far apart in age they all are. But I kind of like how she teases him, pushes him. And how, in return, he’s starting to get to her.And Shiki. I cannot express how pleased I am this series has straight couples (potential ones), and a gay character. I love it! She’s in love with Kanata, and I enjoy the way she thinks in third-person. She gets little chapters of thoughts, showing her feelings and growing friendship with Kanata, as well as her jealousy of Kazuki. I’m so impressed with this. Then we got peaks of new characters at the end of the volume. I don’t know if we’ll see more of them, but I love the glimpses we get of other characters. Just little thoughts from main and side characters in snipets, the subtly showing worlds of thought and growth and work.I love this series already. I’m wildly impressed with the development and thought and complexity. I can’t wait for the next one, every time.[More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

Tailor Sway is a professional organizer on the brink of divorce. When he is hired to appear on a reality TV show called “Hoarded Houses”, he has three days to help a collector of Christmas decorations clean up her property before it’s condemned by local authorities. Everything is going according to Tailor’s carefully laid plans. That is, until Brayzen Mapleridge, a mega-famous pop singer known for his wild, daredevil antics, shows up. Forced to pay for a recent stunt which has turned into a serious legal matter, Brayzen is given the opportunity to avoid jail time by doing some hard labor in front of the cameras. But, it’s not an easy thing to do while being chased by all who trail in the wake of a major celebrity. Is Brayzen sincere about helping, or is it all just part of a well-crafted publicity campaign? Despite some initial clashes between Tailor’s uptight determination and Brayzen’s carefree attitude, the two develop an unlikely partnership that quickly blossoms into a sizzling attraction. But, Tailor’s unresolved conflict with his husband, Grant, an emotionally scarred veteran of the Iraq War, still looms in the background amidst a whirlwind of TV cameras, relentless paparazzi, eager fans, and scathing headlines. Despite all these complications, will it be Brayzen’s own meddling mother who puts the brakes on their steamy love affair for good? 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Reviewed this for Red Pen Cafe. Loved it so much I pre-ordered. This is a book you will love to read! By Rebecca King My Review: Powerfully moving, All That You Can’t Leave Behind will hit you on a deep emotional level. Tailor Sway is a professional organizer helping people take back control of their lives, while he is anything but in control of his own. Quinlan walks you through the heartache, the grief, the pain that lies beneath the heaping piles of debris in one woman’s life as Tailor sets his inner turmoil aside to help her break through the barrier of pain wrapped around her heart to take back control and move forward with a happier, healthier life. When he’s not helping his client, Tailor is forced to think about his own issues and the husband slipping through his fingers. Tailor realizes his husband is done with their marriage and shows a glimpse into lives of a marriage plagued with the aftermath of war. Again Quinlan takes you on an emotional ride as you glimpse the other side of PTSD. Throw in a celebrity crush from his teen years and his control slips beyond his grasp. Brayzen is bold and not afraid to go after what he wants, and what he wants is Tailor.Their journey is flawed; it's sweet; it's frustrating; it's heartbreaking, out a unexpected, and you will enjoy every minute of it. This story will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will take you on an emotional journey filled with love, loss, and laughter. It's a story that stays with you long after the last page has been read.On a personal note, Tailor's circumstances have truly mirrored some of my own and his perceptions have truly helped me understand my own confusing emotional responses.Keeping it Hot!:*It's a very character-driven story that really pulls you in.*It's well written. I got so caught up in the characters that I nearly forgot most of the story took place behind the scenes of a TV show.*Makes you smile, makes you laugh in a loud burst of unrestrained happiness kind of way.*It's sexy.*Full of surprises you don't see coming. Just when you think you know how things are going to turn out, you're wrong.*The other side of PTSD is often portrayed in media, and this book takes it on to show a glimpse of what it's like to watch and suffer right along with your other half.*Full of love in all its forms.*It may seem like its going to be your typical romance, but it's not. It's so much more.Cooling it Down:*I could not put it down. I read straight through meal time...and had to promptly fix my sugar levels...though that's probably more of a positive than a negative for anyone but me.Overall: (Please note I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review). I give this a 5 cup rating. I truly loved this book and bought it so I can read it again and again.

By Bike Book Reviews I love a book that gives you a storyline that you don't expect, but that delivers on all fronts and then some! You will love this authors writing style, and his gift for the unexpected!Tailor and Brayzen couldn't be more different if they tried, organized and well ordered Tailor has a handle on his career as a personal organizer, but his personal life and relationship with his husband is a different matter.Brayzen is living the life of a star, and his latest stunt has landed him in serious trouble with the law, so to avoid jail, he agrees to appear in an episode of "Hoarded Houses" a reality show in which Tailor is hired to be the professional organizer. While they butt heads at first, you can see the chemistry right away, and I love it! There are many factors working against the couple, including Tailor's failing marriage and Brazen's less than stable mother ( boy is that an understatement), can they work through the things that strive to keep them apart? Do they care enough about each other to try? Thanks Kirby, for a book that I thoroughly enjoyed and will read again for sure! I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

Hot M/M romance with a great storyline concerning a timely issues By Neil in Morgan Hill 5-stars for Kirby Quintan's All That You Can't Leave Behind.I recommend this story to readers who enjoy a M/M love story with a good story line combined with hot sexual intimacy. The story flows well and the characters are well developed. There is romance, tragedy and humor. The book is difficult to put down and leaves the reader with a satisfied feeling.Personally, I liked the storyline and the interplay of the characters. Hoarding is a timely issue and the author handled it in a respectful manner pealing back the layers to let the reader in on how this type of behavior may occur. PTSD is a tragic outcome of war. Not only does it inflict terrible consequences on the person suffering from PTSD, it affects the family. Suicidal issues and the failure of our government to adequately address these issues is highlighted in the story. I appreciate the author's reminding us of just how costly the aftermath of war can be to those who serve our country. Okay... off my soap box.I want to thank Kirby for providing me with such great entertainment.

She has created a world within the real world, where the different types of supernatural beings need to set aside their prejudices and come together to fight for their existence. This first book is the introduction to all the main players in this world-saving endeavor. Some have a hint of what is going on and the changes that are coming, and others caught completely off-guard and think they’re losing their minds. LOL Ms. James has done a wonderful job laying out the personalities of each character. Some are humorous, others sexy as hell and I would love to have them in my corner and talk to me the way they do their ladies. WooWoo!! Each plays a specific role in the battle that will play out through the series.Their opposition is playing for keeps and has no problems doing what it takes to keep the supernatural world from surviving; even though they are a part of that world. This story begins what will surely turn out to be a good versus evil show-down, and I for one cannot wait to see how it plays out.I highly recommend you pick up this first book in the series and prepare yourself for total immersion into their world and the journey these characters are going to take you on.

I love all paranormal so that she brings vampires, witches, wolves, pixies, etc. into one book makes me love it even more! The first book in the Immortal series brings you into the supernatural world. Letting you meet all different kinds of species! Letting You meet all of the wonderful characters that Mrs James has created and has so graciously shared with the rest of the world and I for one cannot wait to read more about all of them!

I have to say I was amazed at just how wonderful this book is. If you like reading about witches, vampires, werewolves, and fae/pixie with a new spin, then you will love this. Terra James is a brilliant new author. Em goes from being a normal teenage girl turning 17 to finding out she is more than normal. She realizes a guy she is not normally into is the love of her life. Sometimes we don't choose our friends, but instead destiny chooses them for us. This book will draw you in and leave you wanting more. I read it in less than 24 hours, and will be first in line to receive book two when it releases. I found myself unable to put the book down except for a few hours, but only for some much needed sleep. If I could give this book 10 stars I would. I recommend this book to all. Give it a shot... you know you want to.

Julia Becker, a pretty and popular barrel-racing champion, is acutely aware that life changes in the blink of an eye. She’s about to start her senior year of high school and is recovering from a serious riding accident when her long-time boyfriend, star-quarterback Tyler Perkins, breaks up with her. Lucas Mercado, the son of a Mexican migrant worker, has been living and working at the Perkins dairy farm for the last three months. When he meets Julia at the end of summer, he wants nothing more than to help her start riding again. There’s something about her that draws him to her, but he knows he needs to be careful. When Julia is finally back on her feet, she begins to train for a rescue race with Lucas. Just when life starts feeling normal again, Julia is reminded of how quickly things can change and just how much she has to lose. Life happens fast, and sometimes it’s all you can do to not blink.

Clean YA Featuring Everyday Social Issues By Chloe Jelane More than a Moment starts out with Julia’s boyfriend (Tyler) abruptly breaking up with her just before their senior year in high school. As if that isn’t enough, Julia is also a bit on the outs with her friends after being laid up with a horseback riding injury over the summer, and one of her so-called best friends appears to have grown much closer to Tyler than normal. Luckily, she strikes up a friendship with Lucas (a classmate and immigrant farmhand who works for Tyler’s parents) and, in doing so, learns a lot about true friendship, love, following your heart and standing up for what you believe in.“For anyone who has ever wanted more time.”I suspected from the opening line that this book would touch my heart, and I was right. However, I wasn’t expecting to feel so many different emotions—from sadness, anger and anticipation to embarrassment for the characters and relief. All a result of the themes covered in this lovely YA novel: friendship, peer pressure, bullying, stereotypes, racism, immigration, young love and romance.Aside from the range of emotions I felt while reading, I loved the realistic interactions between the characters, all of the interesting information about horses, and the way Albright tackles the topic of illegal immigration. This is the first fictional book for teens I’ve encountered that highlights several current points related to the issue, all of which are seamlessly woven into the storyline so as not to make the book seem like a lesson in sociology or politics. Two final things that really tugged at my heart strings were the romance between Julia and Lucas, and Albright’s focus on the significance of blinks (and all that can occur with just one) throughout the story. If you’re looking for a clean YA read with serious everyday themes, then I highly recommend this one.Disclosure: I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

It sounded different from other books that are out there and I'm a sucker for romances that are different. I wasn't disappointed by More Than A Moment. It exceeded my expectations. This story deals with issues I've never read about in a book before but which are very prevalent right now, and it does so in a way I felt was very realistic. It really makes you stop and think about people who are in different circumstances from your own.The romance. The romance was incredibly sweet…and yet intense! It made me feel as if I were in my teens again, reading the YA romances that were so popular back then. It was so refreshing and at the same time it made me feel nostalgic for those times. I just loved every moment of Julia's romance with Lucas. I especially loved the way they just were with each other, taking care of each other yet encouraging each other to be strong.More Than A Moment is the perfect young adult romance.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring and Fresh By Vandelay More than a Moment is a refreshing YA read. I was immediately drawn in by the author's intelligent and emotional writing. The reader immediately feels connected to the heroine, Julia. She's been dealt a tough hand when the book starts and you feel her pain and frustration, which took me back to my own teenage years. One of the aspects I found most appealing about this book was how relevant it was. There were so many moments where Julia and Lucas are having to deal with things and I just want to jump into the book and take care of them. I winced more than once when they were being teased (I will not go into details to spoil it). I didn't want to believe other people would treat people that way and I thought to myself, "This would never happen!", but then I realized it would and it does. It made me stop and think about being a teenager myself and seeing others treated poorly, knowing I should step in and say something, but was too afraid for fear of being ostracized. Teenagers have a hard enough life just trying to fit in and it's hard to do anything to jeopardize that. This book will make young people stop and think, "What would I do in a situation like this?" or "What should I do?" Hopefully it has given some the courage to stand up for others, even when they're in the minority. The characters were great. I loved Julia. She was very relatable and a strong girl...a great influence to readers because she did what she knew was right, not what was cool. Lucas was lovable and kind. Such a sweet guy. It was very easy to hate Tyler and Miranda. They were the worst aspects of teenage life that unfortunately, we've all had to deal with.I would highly recommend More than a Moment. Bravo, Kristin Albright, on a sweet romance that has the ability to inspire many.

EVERY UGLY WORD: A New Favorite By Jen St. Rand (Fictitious Delicious) **Please note - This review was published at a time when "Every Ugly Word" was titled "Unbreakable" and was self-published by the author. The character now known as Ashley used to be named Stacy.** I received an email from my friend Brittany a few weeks ago recommending this debut novel from Aimee Salter. Now, I'm not one to normally review a self published author that I don't already have a relationship with, but the synoposis of BREAKABLE and Brittany's insistance that I read it convinced me to pick it up. And I'm so glad I did. Folks, this is one of my favorite reads this year. Before I get into the beautiful story here, I want to mention a really important piece. If you're hesitant to pick up self published books because you're afraid of the writing caliber, listen very carefully to me. The three traditionally published books I read right before BREAKABLE (one by a best selling author) were not written as well as this. The dialogue, the pace, and the emotion conveyed through this story are some of the best I've read. There is no doubt that Aimee Salter loves to write. Shelf any of your self pubbed hesitations right now. Now, onto the story. Be prepared to FEEL when you pick up BREAKABLE. This is a story about a girl named Stacy who is suffering from severe bullying. And not just from classmates. (Let's just say that Stacy's mom does NOT have it going on.) Every single relationship that should be safe for Stacy isn't. Even the one with her future self she sees and confides in when she looks into the mirror can't provide her reassurance. She finds solace in the secret love she holds for her best friend, Mark. But he doesn't know just how bad things are for Stacy. She doesn't want Mark to see how horribly she is treated by her classmates for fear that he, too, will begin hating her and take away the friendship she uses to anchor herself. It is heartbreaking to see her suffer through the emotional and physical bullying, but the real tragedy lies in the fact she has NO ONE to seek out for help. Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, blames her for the fact that she's bullied. And THAT's the reason I wish every single high schooler (and their parents!) could read this book. I don't know that this was Salter's intent with this story, but a huge underlying question for me coming out of this read is, "Who is to blame for bullying?" Stacy blames her bullies, her bullies blame her, and there are seemingly no answers on how to stop it. Stacy puts herself in situations that make it easy for her tormentors to do their thing (*cries*) and it's obvious that the ones doing the bullying are to blame. But what about the ones pretending it isn't happening. Is there blame there, too? Lots of good conversations to start once you read this--so pick it up so we can have them! The biggest villain of all in this book has raised the bar for all villains. He is ruthless, unrelenting and absolutely one of the worst characters I've ever encountered in any book. The reason he's so scary, I think, is because he's SO REAL. I knew one of these boys in ninth grade. We'll just leave it at that.Salter has delivered an incredible story in a very unique way. You learn Stacy's story in a series of "flashbacks" she shares with her psychiatrist after an "event" that lands her in therapy. You'll be eager to learn what exactly this "event" is and the tension you'll feel getting there will remind you of how emotional a book can make a reader feel. I had to put the book down because of the intensity at one point, but came back 10 minutes later because I couldn't stay away. That's a sure sign of a good book.

Awesome read about bullying with a dose of magical realism and a psychological thriller as well By Kelli Nash Every Ugly Word really took me by surprise. I thought, after reading the summary, that it was going to be a book about bullying with a small dose of magical realism. And it was, but the magical realism element was really unique. It had a psychological thriller aspect to it that kept me thinking about the story long after I finished reading it.I am glad that the authors of YA literature are starting to write about bullying. It is a very relevant topic, and worthy of inclusion in the YA genre. I think that nearly everyone experiences bullying at some point in their life, whether they are the victim, the bully, or their friend is affected.Ashely is the target of two of her school's most popular kids: Finn and Karen. For whatever reason---do bullies ever have a good reason for picking on someone?---Finn and Karen set out to make her life miserable. And they succeed in full. Ashley is depressed, constantly tortured at school and via social media, and can't even take solace in her mother's care: her mother thinks that the bullying is Ashley's fault. To add to her desperation, Ashley is hopelessly in love with her best friend, Matt, who sadly does not share her feelings. Matt's friendship is Ashley's only buffer in the storm of high school, and when Matt and Karen start to date, he becomes less of an advocate for Ashley, right when she needs him the most.Just this premise alone would have made for a great, emotional read. But the addition of magical realism: the fact that when Ashley looks in the mirror, she can see herself six years in the future, made this book so unique and intriguing. I loved Ashley's interactions with Older Me. They made me remember my high school years, which were not always great, and I remembered that desperate feeling of wanting to know that things would be better for me when high school was over. Salter captured those feelings perfectly, and the emotions of both present-day Ashley and future Ashley jumped off the pages. I found myself tearing up several times while reading Every Ugly Word, because of how invested I was in Ashley's emotional well-being.The ending of the book really took me by surprise. For most of the book, it was very clear which Ashley was narrating: the present-day Ashley or the older Ashley. However, at the end, the two stories converged. Twice, I actually had to flip back a few pages to make it clear which Ashley was the current narrator. This slight confusion was the only thing I didn't love about this story. If you are new to magical realism, don't shy away from Every Ugly Word. This book is a perfect blend of contemporary fiction with a dash of magical realism, and an emotional journey full of character growth. I highly recommend Every Ugly Word and look forward to reading more from Aimee Salter.

Stacy makes you want to fight for her. She’s not a pushover. Salter is great at believable plot twists; the story never got boring for me. The most accurate description? Raw. On every level.Characters—Stacy: I wouldn't say I necessarily liked her. I always support fighters who are direct in their approach and Stacy wasn't that. But I definitely empathized with her; my heart went out to her and her conflicts within herself and with other characters are very realistic.Older Me: At some times, very enigmatic. I liked it. At others, it seemed like I could see right through her. I think Salter did a great job making Older Me a character full of intrigue, uncertainty, and foreshadowing.Mark: Oh, so clueless, boyish, and…realistic! As the reader, I didn’t see Mark the way Stacy sees him. Instead, I saw the way Stacy saw him and I saw the way the rest of the world would see him. (That’s a lot of “saws”). Anyway, I really respected Salter for making Mark a round character whom one might actually meet in a high school. He’s not some formulaic love interest full of mystery and unrequited love and brooding, yet he still cares deeply for Stacy. In short, I adore the mistakes he makes!Finn: Can we not discuss him? Like, is he worthy to be deemed human? Finn, Stacy’s most enthusiastic tormentor, needs an attitude check and a life. He’s awful—almost too awful to be believable. I can’t decide whether that’s a flaw or a strength. The Themes—I didn’t feel like Salter communicated any strong themes in Breakable, but I did get a sense of some definite ideas. I think this book is a good lesson to people about what really goes on in the mind of someone who is bullied. It also reminds us of the importance of showing compassion to those teenagers. Honestly, I was beyond angry at everyone in the book who blames Stacy for being bullied. …Then, very guiltily, I realized that I would probably have a similar mindset. Wow. Reality check.Final Thoughts—I usually don’t review for self-published authors, but I’m really glad I reviewed for Aimee. She’s a brilliant writer—especially when it comes to plots—and has a lot of potential. Something tells me this will be the first of several novels with which readers will identify. I highly recommend that you read Breakable. You can buy it here for only a couple bucks. It’s definitely worth it.**The author provided me with a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not compensated in any way.

From the Back Cover

The members of Don't Get Mad aren't just mad anymore . . . they're afraid. And with Margot in a coma and Bree under house arrest, it's up to Olivia and Kitty to try to catch their deadly tormentor. But just as the girls are about to go on the offensive, Ed the Head reveals a shocking secret that turns all their theories upside down. The killer could be anyone, and this time he—or she—is out for more than just revenge.

The girls desperately try to discover the killer's identity as their own lives are falling apart: Donté is pulling away from Kitty and seems to be hiding a secret of his own, Bree is sequestered under the watchful eye of her mom's bodyguard, and Olivia's mother is on an emotional downward spiral. The killer is closing in, the threats are becoming more personal, and when the police refuse to listen, the girls have no choice but to confront their anonymous "friend" . . . or die trying.

By Dark Faerie Tales Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: Gripping finish to the amazing Don’t Get Mad duology! All mystery fans must pick this one up!Opening Sentence: ED STOOD IN THE DOORWAY OF THE FIFTH-FLOOR HOSPITAL room and stared at Margot. The Review:Kitty, Olivia, Margot, and Bree are all members of Don’t Get Mad or better known as DGM. They formed the group to try and bring down the bullies in their school, but it was crucial their identities remain a secret because if they ever got caught they would get expelled or possibly face criminal charges. But someone has discovered who they are and decided to frame them for murder. To save the rest of the group Bree turned herself in and poor Margot had a run in with the mysterious killer that has left her in a coma. It is up to Olivia and Kitty to try and find out who is behind it all, but when their number one suspect turns up dead they have to start all over in their investigation. The killer could be anyone and if they don’t figure out the mystery soon everyone they love could be taken away!Bree was my favorite character in the first book and she remained my favorite! I love her rebellious and stubborn personality. I feel like her backstory was the most compelling. She comes from a ton of money but both of her parents are pretty much MIA. Most kids don’t handle a childhood like that very well, and yes, Bree acts out and does some really stupid things. But she stays strong and she tries to be a good person. Another thing I love is the relationship between Bree and John. They are freaking adorable together and I was so excited to watch their relationship develop!Olivia was the most surprising character for me in the story. I liked her fine in the first book, but I felt like she was really superficial. She came across as just a pretty face and I felt like she didn’t contributed as much to the group as everyone else did. That was not the case in this story. She really held her own and grew so much as a person. She takes chances and really puts herself out there to try and figure out what is going on. I found myself cheering for her and I was proud of the person she became.Kitty was always the leader of the group and that doesn’t change. She is great at figuring out a plan and she’s not afraid to make things happen. I feel like Kitty had the most to lose by participating in DGM, so I really respected that she would put herself out there even with the risks. She is a kind hearted girl and someone you could rely on.Margot is the smart one in the group. She is very intellectual and it is amazing how she can figure things out. She is a consistent character and I found her logical thinking very refreshing. Out of all the girls, I felt like she was the odd man out. She’s not popular and she can be awkward when it comes to social settings. All of the girls learn from their experience, but I feel like Margot may have learned the most.Get Dirty is the exhilarating, fast paced, suspenseful ending to the Don’t Get Mad duology! The story picks up right after the ending of the first book and I read this entire story in just a couple of hours. I was so engrossed in that I honestly didn’t put it down until I was finished. I am usually really good at figuring out mysteries, but McNeil did a wonderful job at keeping me guessing. The way the story is written you feel like almost anyone could be a suspect! I wasn’t surprised by who the killer was (because like I said everyone was a suspect), but I didn’t know for sure until it was revealed. I adored the friendship between the four main girls and I also loved the romance as well. I loved how McNeil wrapped everything up in the end. Overall, this was a very entertaining mystery that will keep you up until all hours of the night until you finish the last page! If you are a mystery fan this is a must read!Notable Scene:It took her several minutes before she realized why. There was something on the floor behind the piano. Something that shouldn’t there.Kitty blinked, her eyes focused on the object. It was a shoe, a brown Oxford worn by a fair number of Bishop DuMaine’s male population. No, not just one shoe. There were two. Kitty took a few steps farther into the living room, rounding the piano, and froze in her tracks. Not just shoes; there were legs attached. And a torso.Kitty’s mind screamed at her to stop, to look away, but her body had a mind of its own. Before she even realized what she was doing, she’d approached the figure on the floor and was hovering over it.FTC Advisory: Balzer + Bray/HarperTeen provided me with a copy of Get Dirty. Gretchen McNeil’s Get Dirty picks up immediately where we left off in Get Even, which I read sooo many months ago and alas, I couldn’t remember much that had happened! The pain of reading too much! LOL!After some initial confusion as to who some of the secondary characters were, I was able to quickly get back into the story as the remaining members of DGM, Bree, Kitty, and Olivia try to figure out who the mysterious murderer is. And for the majority of the novel, poor Margot lays comatose in the hospital. But this time, the girls have backup, as more of their friends are initiated into the secret club of DGM.The killer is after the people the girls care for, so having some more of their friends at their side seems prudent even. In the meantime, poor Bree is basically put under house arrest, which pretty much leaves Olivia, Kitty, Ed the Head, John, and Logan to do some of the investigating. The stakes get raised in this one. There were so many secrets and suspicions being tossed at us, but it never felt overwhelming. I just wanted to read even faster to get to the bottom of this mystery. And the killer even starts to go after previous DGM targets! Add to that, it seems there’s a new DGM group in the works that continues the girls’ work in taking the bullies of the school down a notch. And just wow! This is the kind of book where there is literally never a dull moment! So much mystery! So much suspense! It has it creepy and eerie moments as well! And let’s not forget some romantic interludes with some of the characters as well!I definitely liked how things wrapped up in this one! I sooooo did not see this killer coming! I wanted to say I had an inkling of an idea…but then Gretchen totally takes me by surprise with a whopper of a reveal! And just wow! Nicely done, Gretchen! Perhaps my only complaint was not being able to remember the events of Get Dirty as well, which is basically my own fault! I either should’ve waited to binge this duology or try to squeeze a re-read in, which rarely happens these days!My biggest piece of advice here is to read Get Even and Get Dirty back to back because you will not be disappointed! Gretchen McNeil is a master of suspense novels and her books are not ones to be missed! Read them now!Overall Rating 5/5 stars

By Nicole Hewitt The Don’t Get Mad Duology is a fun YA mystery in the vein of Pretty Little Liars, with plenty of intrigue and twists and turns, a dash of romance and a nice helping of back-stabbing to go on the side. I decided to go ahead and review these two books together since I read both books in the duology one right after the other. The book follows a group of four girls who have very publicly (but also secretly) been getting back at their school’s bullies. They formed a group called DGM (Don’t Get Mad) that exposes the truth about their peers – and sometimes their teachers – but the school administration is hot on their tail. When one of DGM’s targets ends up dead, DGM is the prime suspect, and the girls have to discover who the real killer is before their own identities are exposed. Of course, that proves difficult to do when the killer starts coming after them. They find that their identities may not be so secret after all! What I loved:Short and sweet.I was really glad that this was just a two book series, and the mystery didn’t drag on forever. One book to set things up – and to get the girls into a world of trouble – and one book to bring other characters into the fold and to wrap up the mystery. It was perfect! The girls.I really liked and connected to all four girls in DGM (though I had the least connection to Kitty), and I liked how all of them were very different and yet brought together by the DGM cause. We got to see the story from each of their POV’s (and in the second book, we got a new POV – but I won’t say who that is because it feels like a bit of a spoiler). Margot was possibly my favorite of the girls – a bit of a computer nerd who feels kind of invisible. Then there was Olivia – hanging out with the popular crowd and trying to feel like she belonged, even though someone in her crowd was often the DGM target. Bree was the rebel, who just wanted to break away from the strict confines of her political family, and Kitty was an upstanding member of student government and a jock. Each of their girls had a personal reason that they had joined DGM – something that they felt they had to atone for (or something that happened to them that they wanted revenge for). We learned their stories throughout the two books and got to see why they felt like they needed DGM.The guys.Throughout the books, we also got to know a few of the guys, who ended up being entangled in the DGM murder mysteries, no matter how hard the girls tried to keep them out of it. John, Bree’s best friend; Ed the Head, who likes to make a buck off of the student body in any way he can; Logan, Margot’s crush; and Donte, Olivia’s ex – they were all pulled into the mystery. My favorites were John and Ed the Head!Lots of twists and turns.Like any good mystery, this book kept you guessing about who was really behind the murders. The girls find lots of misleading clues and head down several wrong paths before they discover the truth. While I did have a good guess at who the killer was (which turned out to be right), it was really just a guess – I was never sure, and there were plenty of times when I thought it could be someone else. Getting to that final conclusion was a bumpy but enjoyable ride! The negatives:Unrealistic.I found it a bit unbelievable that their were two teenage characters in this book that could basically hack into anything – police databases, school records, etc. Very handy. Also, everyone wanted to solve this murder – not just the DGM girls but also the (horrible and cartoonish Catholic) principle of the school, Father Umberti and the (also horrible and cartoonish) Coach Creed and his group of students. Apparently no one thought it was actually the police’s job to solve murders. The romances.Romance definitely wasn’t the focus of these books, but I wasn’t a fan of the elements that were there for the most part. There were three different romances in the book (maybe four?), but there was only one couple that I was really interested in (and the non-couple that counts at the fourth romance). The other two were just blah and insta-lovey. Luckily, romance was just a tiny part of the books, so I was okay.Revenge.I sometimes wondered a little bit about DGM in general. First off, the group got revenge on bullies by publicly humiliating them (though I will say that the humiliations generally seemed pretty tame) – I guess I was a bit torn on how I felt about that, but I will say that some of the things that the people they were getting revenge on were doing were pretty horrendous (why on earth did this school have so many utterly disgusting teenagers?!). And then there was the girls reasons for joining DGM. One of the girls felt horrible about exposing her friends’ cheating – the overall message seemed to be that she had done something really horrible to her friend (and the others who were cheating), but I couldn’t help but feel like that was a bad message. Really, if someone knows that there is a massive cheating ring going on and that people are trying to pull others into it, I don’t think they should have to feel all that terrible for telling someone. So, overall, I really enjoyed these books. While this wasn’t the most realistic depiction of crime solving, it was a fun ride! I give both books 4/5 stars!***Disclosure: These books were provided to me by the publisher and/or NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. By VStrawmier I remember when this couple met (in a previous book of the series) and it's really touching to see how two people can change so much and see what is really important in life. The two examples they used to envy became their leaders in life and love. The result is a story that will not just stick with you but remind you of the power of God's love and mercy. I highly recommend starting at the beginning of this series and working your way to this book. You will love every salty, sea air moment!

Though I didn't find it hilarious, I did throughly enjoyable. And even though it didn't seem like it was going to, it had perfect HEA.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Modern Day Fairy Tale By Emily This book was magical. Maybe that's a little dramatic, but if you think about it or read the book if you haven't, Harriet's life is kind of like a modern day fairy tale. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This book made me laugh and it made me smile. It also made me hate certain characters, while falling in love with other ones. There are also a lot of side stories in this novel, so it's not just about Hari and it helps to keep the reader's attention. Overall, this is a great romantic comedy novel, and I really hope there is a sequel. There absolutely needs to be a sequel. The world needs more of Hari! Okay. I'll stop now. But seriously, this book was awesome.

It's better than your average chick lit with a good plot and really likeable well developed characters. The three girlfriends brought back happy memories of my younger days trying to climb the first rungs of the ladders of career and relationships. I was kept guessing till the final pages as there are some compelling twists and I was left wanting more. What happens to Harriet next? Please please please Susie Hooper give us a sequel..
