These are great stories for anyone who wants to get a first-hand look at pioneering efforts in the 20th century American West (the book spans 1914 to 1939). Popular history discussions of this period typically focus on prohibition, the great depression and the dust bowl, but there was also a lot of other interesting progress being made as people continued to settle the rural west; this book captures that from the vantage point of a very active and hard-working pioneer of that era.If you've passed through Central Idaho, or grown up there (as I did), you will appreciate the places and people included -- perhaps you've seen those places or known the families in these stories. Many moons ago, when I was in high school, I spent a summer as a tour guide on the Yankee Fork Gold Dredge, and had the good fortune of meeting author Roland Lindberg, who shared a few stories about growing up and working in Idaho. I loved those stories, and can still hear his voice when I read this book.
