In a devastating indictment of the GM management system, this insider exposé outlines the $100 Billion fear-driven, top-down boondoggle that didn’t make the news—anywhere. And it was called the Paint Plan. Moving from general corporate engineering to a specialty in environmental issues, the author, Nicholas Kachman, became a quiet but persistent spokesman for common sense solutions to, among other things, the problem of air pollution from the auto painting process. Writing with passion, Kachman equips the reader with the background needed to grasp the folly of the decisions that were made. Even those unfamiliar with air pollution and the auto industry will find the mismanagement lessons broadly applicable.

Kachman's Book on GM Should be Mandatory Reading for All MBA Students By RR GM: Paint it Red Nick Kachman has written a book that should become mandatory reading in any MBA course on ethics. It is a story of what is wrong in Corporate America including out-of-touch executives and how wrongful thinking can so easily grab control over a corporation that lacks a strong ethical corporate culture.Nick was a high ranking executive at GM's Environmental Activities Staff (EAS). EAS was designed to be the conscience of the Corporation. EAS oversaw environmental matters related to both manufacturing and the tailpipes of cars. EAS also oversaw automotive safety issues.Nick Kachman would tell his engineers at EAS to always "do the right thing". In a company where the bearer of bad news was often demoted and even fired, Nick had the courage to tell Corporate Executives when they were doing something that was wrong. And by wrong, I mean not just unlawful, but wrong from a policy or ethical perspective. After Nick retired, the guys (and they were all guys) who Nick had confronted decided to get even with him by decimating his staff. GM eliminated the EAS and with it the conscience of the Corporation. If GM still had a staff charged as the conscience of the Corporation than GM and Mary Barra would not be in the position they are in now with the switch debacle.Every Corporation should have a conscience. Every Corporation would benefit from the wisdom of Nick Kachman.

By Alex Payne Here is a very well written book that tells it like it really is, or was, from the inside of General Motors corporate offices. The absolute folly of cutting a deal with the EPA based on a product and process that had not been, and never was, developed bled GM nearly dry and no one in the media picked it up. There are valuable lessons here for any student of business. The insights for the future of the corporation are grounded in solid logic and good business sense. I highly recommend GM: Paint It Red.
