Finding the answers just might kill you… Eighteen-year-old Drake Sinclair is a freak. There’s no other explanation for his superhuman speed, strength and fighting prowess that makes him feared by those around him. But going to college in North Carolina promises a fresh start. A new place with new people, and maybe, just maybe, a chance to find out who he really is. Until the psychopath shows up. The notorious serial killer, Lucius Sykes, is physically enhanced like Drake: stronger, faster, and smarter than any human. He is the original survivor of the illegal tests done to both of them by Project Midnight; a project that will stop at nothing to get Drake back and complete their experiments. Trapped between Sykes’ murderous frenzy against guilty and innocents alike, and the brutality of Project Midnight, Drake realizes his own superhuman abilities are the only things that can stop them both. He takes to the streets as Phantom, a vigilante straddling the blurred lines of good and evil. Hounded by the chief of police, his morality tested by the sickness and hate he fights everyday and split between stopping Sykes and seeking answers from him, Phantom must find out who the real evil is before everything he’s come to love goes to ruin. A coming of age in a city of madness and rage.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. so I gave it five stars because quite frankly this is very good for a first effort By Ken I. If this had been an established writer, I probably would have given it four stars, mainly because the characters were flushed out just enough to begin to care for them, but not really enough to forget this is just a book and so, at least for me, not enough for to get wrapped up the danger the characters experienced. But this is an engaging story and the characters are likeable, so I gave it five stars because quite frankly this is very good for a first effort. And I for one am really looking forward to getting to know these characters and to be introduced to the new ones who will be coming along.

Even though Drake's powers aren't unique to him alone, you empathize with him easily, and I was cheering on him and his crew the whole time. I liked all of the main characters friends, although my favorite of the four (Matt, Melanie, Liz, and Cody) was definitely Melanie. That being said, I would say the most complex character was Ryans, and I didn't expect (but enjoyed quite a bit) the twisty history that he had. It was pretty hard for me to pin down his agenda until much later in the book. I grew attached to the characters as I read on, and became invested in what happened to them. Sykes was...interesting for me, and very creepy at times. Well done. The plot wasn't incredibly complex, but it was a fun read and there were several twists that I wasn't expecting. The action scenes were well written, not boring blow by blow but enough to know exactly what was happening. During the fight scenes there was kind of the feeling you get when reading a superhero comic or watching an action movie, so I'd say that's a good sign. While there was violence, it wasn't overdone. As a first book, I was really impressed. I easily slipped into the world and the characters. Where there was tension, I was tense. (The mental hospital scene, I was reading in the dark...and I definitely turned on some lights to read the rest of the way through). Decisions made by the protagonist and friends had consequences for them, and sometimes serious ones, which I found refreshing in comparison to many novels where events and decisions have no meaning or effect. The writing was good with minimal grammatical errors (if any), and I could visualize almost every scene in my head. When I picked it up, I sped through it.Overall, I really enjoyed the book, and would definitely buy a sequel. The book's ending leaves open the opportunity for one, and I would love to see it happen. With relate-able characters, effortless reading, and interesting twists, it's an easy choice for me.

A likable superhero faces a formidable foe By Avid Pacific Northwest Reader I Am Phantom features a likable superhero protagonist, Drake Sinclair, who must fight to protect a college town – and possibly the world – from a terrifying villain. When Drake leaves his life in Bhutan to attend Queensbury University in North Carolina, he gets far more than a college education. Drawn by a mysterious note from someone named “L.S.” who may know why Drake has superhuman physical powers, Drake embarks on a quest to understand his own origins, discover his calling, and learn how best to use his special abilities and martial arts training. His journey leads him to a series of shocking revelations – and throws him and his tightly knit group of friends into increasingly perilous situations.A highly readable and entertaining debut novel, I Am Phantom’s cinematic qualities reminded me of movies like X-Men and the Fantastic Four. Drake relates the story in straightforward, first person prose touched with humor and complete with kinetic fight scenes, blood, bodies and explosions – more than enough to keep even reluctant readers entertained. Following a fiery crisis scene, the satisfying denouement allows room for a possible series.
