By Matt Anderson Collects Spider-Woman (2014) issues #1-4 and Marvel Spotlight (1971) #3This collection ties directly into the 2014 Spider-Man event called "Spider-Verse." Alone, these issues might be a little confusing, and even if you read them during the event, they sometimes felt pointless. In order to fill out this collection, Marvel decided to include one of Spider-Woman's early appearances from 1971, but this issue doesn't have any connection with the rest of the book.I know that this collection has to exist (because Marvel chose to start the new "Spider-Woman" series in the midst of an event), but this particular volume feels like a waste since these exact issues appear in the full "Spider-Verse" collection. My guess is that Volume 2 of "Spider-Woman" will feel more like a starting point.I read these issues when they originally came out, so here are my SPOILER-FILLED REVIEWS:Spider-Woman #1: Spider-Woman, Spider-Man Noir, and Silk are on the run from the Inheritors to keep Silk safe because she is the important entity known as the Bride. They travel around the multiverse, but eventually have to leave Spider-Man Noir on his home world with his Felicia Hardy because the Inheritors, Bora and Brix, do some serious damage to him. As the issue closes, 616 Peter tells Jessica that he needs her for something else. He leaves Spider-Gwen and 616 Spider-Girl in charge of watching Silk. Meanwhile, knowing that she is putting the others in danger, Silk travels through a multiversal portal by herself (and the Inheritors are close behind).Spider-Woman #2: I like Spider-Woman. I’m glad she has her own series now, and it has been fun to read her in “Spider-Verse.” In this issue she goes to Loom World, the home world of the Inheritors, in order to do recon. It turns out her double is a celebrity there, and the alternate Jessica Drew actually works for the Inheritors. After some action, Jessica is able to render her double unconscious, and takes her place. Meanwhile, Silk stops by Loom World as she is on the run from the Inheritors. While jumping through portals, she ends up on an Earth that has been destroyed by nuclear warfare. The Inheritors can’t follow her because of the radiation, but is it safe for her? Back on Loom World, Morlun visits Jessica, and before she knows what’s happening, he goes in for the kiss. Her double is in a relationship with Morlun!Spider-Woman #3: Of all the tie-ins I’ve read so far, this was the worst one. Not because the story was bad, but because we’ve seen the events in this issue already in the main Spider-Verse story found in Amazing Spider-Man. Only the last few pages were new material.Spider-Woman #4: This can be summarized quickly. Jessica convinces her counterpart from Loomworld to lead the people of Loomworld. She isn’t as good as Jessica, but she isn’t evil. The new costume debuts next month. Spider-Gwen, Spider-Girl, and Silk are all with her at the beginning of the issue. Back on Earth-616, Jessica decides to leave the Avengers and get a new costume.

Hopeless does a really good job if getting the reader up to speed. But the story feels like a placeholder and just feels disjointed. Back in the day this would gave been a backup in another title or a miniseries both as a test for an ongoing series. It's not until the very end of the fourth issue where the creators get on with the real New storyline for Jessica Drew. It's not terrible but it's nothing special. But you can tell that Hopeless has a great grasp on the character and has something special planned now that the obligatory nod to the crossover gods is done.

Heaven by Belinda McBride

Book three in the Bad Angels series

Falling isn’t so bad, it’s the landing that hurts.

After being trapped out of space and time, Dr. Noemi Gastineau finally discovers her true nature and the amazing destiny that awaits her. However, danger surrounds her on every side. A rogue angel, an insane nymph and a wily demon would be enough for any woman to deal with for one day. Unfortunately, Azrael, the Angel of Death, is now on her tail, too, and he’s one of the good guys.

How’s a succubus supposed to get any quality time with her men when the whole universe is out to get her?

The Bad Angels series

When he fell from the sky, the angel Orion Hunter lost everything: his memories, his voice and just possibly his sanity.

After rescuing Rion, Rex Clark finds himself with not one, but two mysterious angels on his hands. The Sidhe farmer gets tangled in the mysteries of celestial politics and the danger of marauding demons on Earth. In one shocking moment, heaven and hell cross paths with Rex in the centre of the collision.

A naive angel, a ravenous succubus and a Sidhe who wants them both… They may not be a match made in heaven, but these three would walk into hell to be together.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Heaven was a good read By Jacque If you are picking up Heaven to read and have not read any of the previous titles in the Bad Angel series, then you need to stop right now. This is a series that MUST be read from book one. Each book may be short novellas but there is quite a bit of world building as well as character development that has been building. Without starting from the beginning with Falling, you will be lost.I hope you're ready to get a lot of questions answered because almost all of mine got answered. The whole Rion, Rex, Noemi triangle does come into play again and the reasons why not only were good but they were hot. However, there is more than sex here. The adventures they find themselves on lead to a really good epic battle that as much I felt needed to happen, still caught me off guard after everybody shows their true colors...and spilled their secrets!I'm still on the fence about the ending. It very much had a happy ending for the main characters and yet it seemed there was still a cliffhanger calling out to me. I know this is a series that was originally written a few years back so I'm guessing there won't be any more entries into the Bad Angel series. I'm not going to go into details so you'll have to figure out for yourself is you agree the ending seems a bit incomplete. Other than that tidbit, Heaven was a good read.I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.Stars - 3.5, Flames - 5

Good read By The Romance Reviews Reviewed by Book Addictfor TheRomanceReviews.comHappily ever after for a fallen angel turned succubus may not be in the cards for Anahita. Stuck in an in-between world where she is slowly starving to death due to lack of sex, she is almost giving up hope. When an angel appears to slay her, Anahita almost welcomes it if it were not her own brother.HEAVEN is the third book in this series. The books should be read in order. This is not a standalone. Full disclosure, I read it as a standalone and I'm sure my experience is not as good as it would have been if I had read the first two books.Ms. McBride does a good job of recapping some of the events from the previous books so there isn't too much confusion. This world is torn apart as it appears the angels have been corrupted. Whilst trying to battle this corruption, Anahita suffered. The tragic loss she experiences is more than she can bear. Fortunately for her, in this one it seems she will finally be reunited with her lovers. The lovers in this story are a tangled knot. One would think it could all go wrong as Anahita loves Rion who loves Reux who needs Anahita. Talk about a love triangle. Fortunately, this menage is a sexy triad and it works well. Each of the characters in this story are admirable and easy to fall in love with. What is confusing at times is how each character goes by more than one name. It could be two or three when nicknames are included. Fortunately, they are different enough that it is easy to distinguish between them. The sex in this story is heavenly. The m/m and the m/f are all delicious. Ms. McBride does a lovely job of bringing all three together into a relationship that works for them. The ending of this story leaves it open for another story. It seems there will be a show down--a war of the angels so it would seem. This paranormal romance is recommended for menage lovers who have a thing for fae and angels.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Heaven By Evampire Dr. Noemi Gastineau wants some quality time with her men but it seems the whole universe is out to get her in this exciting paranormal romance. I was completely caught up in the story from the beginning and by beginning I mean the first book, Falling, and Heaven brought it all together, completing the scorching threesome and culminating in a spectacular battle in the war between the good and the evil. I was unable to determine if the author intends to write more in this series or have a connected series, but I certainly hope so because Michael is still out there and I want to know what happens to the other dark angels.See my full review at: The Romance Reviews .com

About the Author Dragon Knight Chronicles or DKC was founded in May of 2013 by Kathryn Jenkins. Kathryn started with a blog, which hosted a short story writing competition. What started as a site to help self-published authors break into print and started growing into something more as new authors signed on to help it grow. So while the main goal of DKC has and always will be to help new indie authors get their work published, we are also helping authors promote their work through a subsidiary called Dragon Knight's Book Promotions, where they help authors plan and host blog tours and get the word out about their new releases, cover reveals and whatever other promotion they may be doing. Kathryn says, "At DKC, we believe that every author is capable of being great…for some it just might be how they are going about promoting themselves."

The creatures featured throughout, both good and evil, display the devastating or wonderful personalities they were given by the authors who created them for your enjoyment.I found all the stories in this anthology to be exceedingly well written, so much so, that I couldn’t choose a favourite. I enjoyed them all!A truly wonderful collection of fairy stories for everyone to enjoy!

The authors have created a book of Magic as I have rarely read another one. Their stories are as wonderful, different and scary as their craft. Each story is unique and makes me, as the reader, want to know more about the world I just dove into.At this point I refuse to write about each story in detail simply because it would be too dangerous to give away too much instead of just tickling the reader's curiosity. All I would like to say at this place is: read away, you won't be disappointed, I promise!

By Mel Woods As is frequently the case with anthologies this book is a mixed bag. There was a really great story that I liked about the loyalty of a dog/wolf to his master. Actually there were two stories about dog/wolves. Both I liked. But the story that touches on the holocaust fell flat. This is a really difficult topic or in this case setting with which to work with. And this short story did not handle it well.

By Wayne A McCoy 'Justice, Inc' brings together three pulp heroes in one big crossover. I've read a few of these and some work better than others. This one didn't work all that well to me.This time around The Shadow, Doc Savage and The Avenger are all teamed up. Doc Savage has created an invention that allows his future self to cross over into the past. There is also part of this invention that has bad guys interested. They are so interested that they decide to team up and fight against our three heroes. They do this before our heroes even realize they are a team. Along the way, we also get the origin story of The Avenger, a character I was less familiar with, but I remember seeing him on book covers. Does it sound like a mess? Because it kind of is. By the time it ended, I was tired of The Shadow being so grouchy. If he doesn't ever work well in teams, I don't know why it's interesting to keep trying to get him to team up. I was tired of jokes about Doc Savage's new haircut (which resembles the one I know from the books). I missed Doc's team, which is kind of brushed off, except we do see Monk and a couple others. I did like the in-joke of naming the bad guy Ernst Roberson, which is a combination of the names of the author pseudonyms for the writers of Doc and The Avenger. It kind of was all over the place. Famous people show up, but then don't seem to have anything to do except act as show pieces. I get The Shadow as a loner, but he is so unlikeable that I don't know why anyone would agree to work with him. The plot gets elongated to the point where when we finally get back to it, I had lost interest. It's a shame too, because, like I said at the beginning of the review, I've seen some very successful crossovers with some of these characters or others of the era. This one left me wanting a lot more.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Dynamite Entertainment, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Now together for the first time are publisher Street and Smith's big three Hero pulp adventure characters.Dynamite Comics released this six issue series starting in 2014. Now collected here are six issues plus all of the Alex Ross paintings and all the alternate covers many just as beautiful. While I really wanted to totally love this book , I must confess I only really liked it. The writing is a little clunky in parts with just too much exposition and not enough heart and emotion. The interior art was not quite up to the standards set by the covers.Michael Uslan is a Hollywood Producer who dabbles in a occasional comic projects when it involves characters he loves. Clearly it is obvious that this is a Labour of Love for Uslan. His footnotes from the floppies are all reproduced here and are a helpful touch.Italian artist Giovanni Timpano provides all the interior art . I found his art to resemble a mix of Paul Gulacy and Brian Talbot. He does an excellent job with the all the 1939 buildings and backgrounds making if feel very authentic. My complaint is some of his faces look a little strange and we see an awful lot of people with their mouths wide open. The Coloring by Marco Lesko I found too dark for my taste. But that seems to be common with most modern coloring. The villains Uslan selects are excellent. The combination of Voodoo Master and John Sunlight are great. This story retells the Avenger's origin but instead this time both The Shadow and Doc Savage are involved. This is a neat concept and actually works for me. In fact I think the best parts of this book is when Uslan is writing The Avenger.A couple things that bothered me is that this seems to be a sequel to Uslan's The Shadow/Green Hornet : Dark Nights. I own that book but never got around to reading it so I don't know for sure, but all the references to it bothered me.While that is a minor quibble the other thing was more glaring. Dynamite insisted Uslan use the modern day Doc Savage but the period version of the Shadow and the Avenger. That factor demanded that story include Time Travel. I am not a big fan of Time Travel and I thought having a futuristic Doc Savage just didn't seem to ever gel right either.I dearly love all these characters and just loved seeing them all together. One of these days Dynamite is going to hit one clear out of the ball park , but for now I am just happy we keep getting on base.Recommended.

By Chris Ryan I've loved The Shadow, Doc Savage, and The Avenger since I discovered Athens Bantam paperback reprints of their pulp adventures as a kid back in the 1970's, so I have wanted to read a book like this for over forty years. It doesn't disappoint. Uslan does a fine job with a plot that is full of nods to fans. The art is fun and dynamic, overall a satisfying read.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I'M IN LOVE WITH THESE SMOOTHIES! By Purest I am so excited and thankful to have been one of the first to experience these heavenly smoothies! After drinking them in the mornings when I wake up and eating the diet that Helyn recommends, I have noticed something remarkable. My hair, which used to be 50% gray on the top, reduced to 5% gray and the monthly growth of my hair went from one inch to two! Yes, it's true! I can honestly say that Helyn has taken the flavor of nutrient-dense foods to an entirely new level. There is just no comparison. They are mouth-wateringly delicious and so life-giving! I am 67 years old and feel like 25. I look at least 20 years younger than I am. The concept of "health-food" can elicit "boring." Not her recipes! Who would have thought that something so healthy could be so delicious-beyond-words at the same time!

Putting food in our mouths that serves us as nature intended, for nutrition, is indeed quite a feat in our society. The voices of society keep pushing us to a state of unhealthiness. This is an exciting book that i am enjoying immensely. Knowing I don't have to second guess the ingredients is a pleasure unsurpassed by most of my current books. Helen takes out any question as to is this unhealthy. She represents a rareness in our modern medicine world, one that wants you healthy without the medicines. Take food for Medicine. Eat yourself to health. Enjoyed the PBJ smoothie yesterday. Delightful! Amazing results. Enjoy everyone.

Buena lectura!

I received a free advance copy for an honest review. I have been enjoying the series and I enjoyed this book very much also. You don't need to read the previous books in the series but I think it is beneficial. This book finds Maya and her brothers Tarren and Gabe grooved into hunting 'bad' Angels. Their own family dynamics have settled down into somewhat of an understanding. This book leads Maya into more discoveries of herself, her two brothers, her 'other' family and what else is out loose in the human world. Does she find love? Will new revelations cost her her family? Will she find new family? All these questions are posed as the action continues. By the end of the book Maya and her family realize things are changing and they need to change with them in order to not lose the fight that is ahead.

By hsim@email.com Outstanding fourth book in “Girl with Broken Wings” series. Ms. Bennett has a real gift for story-telling, being able to give the reader the textual cues to visualize action scenes through her writing. This is another gripping, exciting, fast-moving episode in the continuing saga of Maya, Gabe, and Tarren’s war against the angels (the bad guys). For those new to the series, I highly recommend reading the books in order to appreciate the whole saga from the beginning. The first three books are, in order, “Falling”, “Landing” and “Rising”. In each book, Ms. Bennett further develop each of the main characters, giving us further insights into their personalities, strengths, and weaknesses, and making each character come alive more fully. I especially enjoy how Maya has developed from being a scared, hardly coping, helpless victim to gradually becoming more and more capable and able to fight back, with the help of her brothers, Gabe and Tarren, against those responsible for dragging her into the dark world of the angels.I thoroughly enjoyed reading “Leaping” and could hardly put it down. It was action-packed from beginning to end, interspersed with twists and hints of secrets between the characters, to spice things up and keep the reader guessing. And I really enjoy the Chuck Norris jokes, once again, to lighten things up when it seems to be getting a bit too serious. My only slight complain is that the book seems too short and now we have to wait till next year for the next episode. I highly recommend “Leaping” to all the fans of the “Girl with Broken Wings” series. To those new to the series, what are you waiting for? Download a free copy of “Falling” at Amazon.com.Disclaimer: I received a free pre-publication copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

As the number of enemies grows; Tarren, Gabe, and Maya find that the scope of their mission is changing. Each member of the team struggles to come to terms with the increasingly non-stop struggle against the angels while secrets threaten to tear them apart. Will Tarren's miracle 'cure' be the answer they are hoping for or is it something sinister?Leaping is a great continuation of the series. You will laugh with Gabe, agonize with Tarren, and try to come to grips with reality with Maya. I enjoyed this novel thoroughly and can't wait for the final novel. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a funny, thoughtful, action packed, well-written urban fantasy series.

To those who loved him, like Teddy Roosevelt, he was "Nicholas Miraculous," the fabled educator who had a hand in everything; to those who did not, like Upton Sinclair, he was "the intellectual leader of the American plutocracy," a champion of "false and cruel ideals." Ezra Pound branded him "one of the more loathsome figures" of the age. Whether celebrated or despised, Nicholas Murray Butler (1862–1947) was undeniably an irresistible force who helped shape American history.

With wit and irony, Michael Rosenthal traces Butler's rise to prominence as president of Columbia University, which he presided over for forty-four years and developed into one of the world's most distinguished institutions of research and teaching. Butler also won the Nobel Peace Prize and headed both the Carnegie Endowment and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, among innumerable other organizations. In 1920, he sought the Republican nomination for president, managing to garner more votes on the first ballot than the eventual winner, Warren Harding. Rosenthal's richly detailed, elegantly crafted narrative captures the mania and genius that propelled Butler to these extraordinary achievements and more. Thick with social, cultural, and political history, Nicholas Miraculous recreates Butler's prodigious career and the dynamic age that nourished him.

Nicholas Miraculous: The Amazing Career of the Redoubtable Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, by Michael Rosenthal

From Publishers Weekly Butler (1862–1947), one newspaper commented three years before he received the Nobel Prize (1931), was "the most lavishly decorated member of the human race." Upon his death, the New York Times described him as "one of the best known Americans of his generation the world over." However, many of Butler's projects—such as the College Entrance Examination Board—are as familiar as he is now forgotten. As president of Columbia University from 1902 to 1945, Butler nurtured the school's growth from small college to major research institution. His involvement in Republican politics brought the friendship (and later the enmity) of several presidents, and as president of the Carnegie Endowment for Peace (1925–1945), his international stature grew. Although Rosenthal, a former Columbia dean of students, attends to the personal affairs of this man absorbed by institutions, Butler's life remains one of meetings, memos and minutes. The author uses an abundance of archival and published material judiciously; his style is felicitous, and the tale is enlivened by in-fighting and occasional scandal. Manipulator? Manager? Opportunist? Idealist? Sycophant? Pioneer? Rosenthal's skill in rendering a complex life in an absorbing fashion reveals them all. 16 b&w illus., 13 political cartoons. (Jan.) From Booklist The animating question of this biography is, How does a once-famous civic leader fall into oblivion? Nicholas Butler autocratically ruled Columbia University from 1902 to 1945. No university president today could dispose of institutional affairs in Butler's I-know-best manner. In some ways, he did know best, expanding Columbia from a college into a world-class university with professional graduate schools; sections duly recount Butler's fund-raising and stag-club networking. What extends Rosenthal's biography from institutional to general interest is Butler's life in public affairs, where he was prominent in the Republican Party, seeking its presidential nomination in 1920. He also presided over the Carnegie Endowment, gaining prestige (and the Nobel Peace Prize) for promoting idealistic schemes of peace. Fair to Butler but arch about his unapologetic, unwavering elitism, Rosenthal delivers a profile that is far livelier than its academic ambience would initially suggest. Review

Michael Rosenthal's graceful, insightful narrative gift, which is a considerable one, is his ability to explain, as a cautionary tale, how this supremely self-confident, insufferable, immensely talented man transformed Columbia into an internationally renowned research university, while achieving worldwide adulation and acclaim, only to disappear into historical oblivion a short time after his death.--Eugene M. Tobin"Journal of American History" (01/01/0001)

[A] vividly written and meticulously researched biography.... A must for those concerned with the development of college and university education from its dry days in the nineteenth century to its bristling status today.--Louis Auchincloss "Bookforum "

Beveridge Nicholas Miraculous: the Amazing Career of the Redoubtable Dr. Nicholas Michael Rosenthal's biography of Nicholas Murray Butler was fascinating reading for me because of Butler's position as my father's boss and major influence on the social, political and academic world in which he lived during the 1930's and early 1940's (my formative years). It was a world of clubby collegiality for those on the inside, formal social affairs, conservative politics, anti-Semitism, and class and cultural snobbery. Attitudes towards Franco's Spain, Mussolini's Fascism and Hitler's Nazis ranged from admiration to toleration - at least up to the time of the invasion of Poland in 1939. The issue of Negroes on the faculty or in the student body was so far from Butler's concern or concept of the way things should be that it is not even mentioned in his biography. Faculty members were free to exercise academic freedom so long as they did not publicly challenge any of the basic principles of the world of Butler and his colleagues. Those who did, were dismissed or passed over for promotion. My father often complained about the internal politics he had to deal with at Columbia and I had assumed that this was a problem endemic to all academic institutions, but after reading this book I get the impression that it was worse at Columbia than other places because of the personality and policies of Butler himself who was not a very good administrator.

Miraculous Biography of Shaper of Columbia University By Reinerlaw Professor Rosenthal has done a superb job of evoking the persona of the man who built Columbia, using his 44-year tenure as university president. The author has even succeeded in evoking the reader's sympathies for Butler, a powerful leader who, viewed in today's lights, was an autocratic megalomaniac who missed many opportunities to build an even greater educational institution on Morningside Heights. This biography will be of great interest to anyone who spent time at Columbia (or its sister institutions) during the 20th century -- the years during which Butler's influence was at its zenith. It provides, perhaps for the first time, a background for some of the University's admirable traditions, balanced, wisely, by a few rather embarassing episodes in its history.

By the age of 47 most people are looking towards an easier and quieter life; however, Welsh celebrity Lynne Allbutt decided to see if she could run across a country - in her bare feet. Far from being an ultra-runner, or extreme sports enthusiast, it was Lynne's disquieted past that motivated her to undertake the challenge. Barefoot and Before not only chronicles Lynne's training diary, including the highs and lows of preparing for the epic 52 mile run across a country without shoes, but also the unconventional and often chaotic challenges of her personal life. On her galvanising journey she not only learns to mask the fear and hide the heartache experienced in her early life but stumbles, via her own gardening business and affinity with nature, into the world of TV, media and celebrities. Lynne's honesty is refreshing and revealing as she describes dealing with her mother's bipolar disorder, the tragic and agonising loss of loved ones, abusive relationships and her constant pursuit of self-worth and confidence. The vulnerability she felt when exposing her feet unexpectedly and painfully unveiled the subconscious fears of ridicule and rejection which she had carried through her life. Remarkably, by pursuing her barefoot exploration, tangled and torn emotions are slowly recycled into self assurance and acceptance as she realises her goal and her potential. "A remarkable lady and a remarkable challenge. An exciting combination." -Robert Plant "Running the mountainous width of Wales is an impressive undertaking in shoes let alone without. Well done." - Sir Ranulph Fiennes "Having witnessed Lynne walk her talk and admired the most satisfactory results at a time when reconnecting to nature is pertinent, I believe Barefoot and Before to be the outstanding book of the present time." - Howard Marks

Is it because your readers are just too stupid to understand Tanaka's original terms? Fun terms were turned into the same boring language that gets used in every other manga when they could have been part of more creative world building. "Master." "Weapon." Are you trying to turn this into 'Soul Eater?' Left me feeling salty and faintly insulted as a fan. That aside, typesetting and redraws were much better than standard Western reprints. Omake strips are printed on the inside of the back cover.
