2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An amazing book about the soldier's life before By Huub Janssen An amazing book about the soldier's life before, during and after WWII. Well written, Clear to understand. I read it with a laugh because despite the horror the men had, fortunately, humor during their awful time in Germany. And I read it with a tear because, for me, it's just unbelievable what these men had to go through. Although I was born long after the war this book took me back to the days in 1944 to 1945. I can recommend this excellent book to all. A must have, really.

In turn, this book is like watching someone stroke a cat for memories. It draws us into the day, the feeling, the smell and thought process with words, pictures, maps and mathematics. It's a bittersweet balm for me. My stepfather told stories of his experiences in WWII laying on his belly in snow, how no matter what your faith - God would show up when needed and rolling a piano down the street to help furnish a makeshift enlisted men's watering hole. The fortitude, patience and temperament of the son to cradle the story into fruition is to be applauded. This is the type of biography you give to a young person to whom you want exposed to critical thinking, humor, history and philosophy rolled all into one.
