About the Author Gustav Meyrink (I868-1932) found worldwide critical and commercial acclaim with his first novel The Golem (I9I5), which prior to the Dedalus Meyrink programme has been the only work available in English. It established his reputation as the master of the occult and the grotesque.(He was the German translator of Dickens). His reputation declined in his last years but his work is now being reassessed in Germany & Austria, and he is now considered as one of the most important German language novelists of the 20th century . Dedalus is part of the European-wide movement championing Meyrink's work. A new translation of The Golem was published by Dedalus in 1995, and the first English translations of The Green Face; Walpurgisnacht, The Angel of the West Window, The White Dominican, The Opal (and other stories), were published by Dedalus during 1991-94 making all of Meyrink's major work available in English. In 2008 Dedalus published the first English language biography of Gustav Meyrink, Vivo: The Life of Gustav Meyrink by Mike Michell. In 2010 Dedalus will publish a further collection of Meyrink's short stories.

Es streift das Unbewusste und Paranormale; ist ein Psycho-thriller ersten Ranges. Ich las dieses Werk zum erstenmal als ich 15 Jahre alt war und dann vergingen lange Jahre bis ich es fast zufaellig in Amazon (Kindle-Format) wieder entdeckte und mir sagte "ach, das solltest du doch wieder mal lesen". Werke dieser Art koennen an Bedeutung gewinnen je reifer und aelter man wird. Inzwischen hat auch die wissenschaftliche Forschung auf dem Gebiet der Psychologie des Unbewussten grosse Fortschritte gemacht, und trotzdem bleibt dieser Roman genauso aktuell. Eine empfehlenswerte Lektuere; das E-reader Format ist gut.Not an easy lecture although Gustav Meyrink's works are recommended to everybody who loves the specific genre of thrillers about the Subconscious and Paranormal. The Kindle Version of the German Original is well made and good to read.

Classical reading By Ondrej Svaton Famous German writing author living in Prague describes the dark atmosphere of enigmatic Czech capitol in the beginning of the 20th century. Golem is an artificial medieval person created in Prague by the legendary Jewish rabbi. A must-reading for all who are interested in German written Czech literatura, e.g. for Kafka or Max Brod (or Rilke...).

By Robert Moore Jonathan Hickman's two-volume SECRET WARRIORS is as close to the model for the TV series MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. as exists. Well, perhaps along with certain elements from the Charles Soule written INHUMAN comics in the Marvel Now! reboot of their titles. I won't go into what bit was taken from which - and even if one did, there are still other bits taken from other comics - but the central story arc concerning Daisy Johnson becoming Nick Fury's protege is in broad strokes the basis for the TV series, the major difference being that the TV series substitutes Agent Coulson's relationship with Skye for that of Fury and Daisy Johnson, though the source material has been made clearer in Season Three as Skye, after learning late in Season Two that her birth name was Daisy Johnson, has asked everyone to call her Daisy Johnson.This pair of books provided some of the major inspiration for the Marvel cinematic universe, since it explores in detail the notion that S.H.I.E.L.D. may have been under the control of Hydra (and similar organizations) for decades.I do want to stress that this is a Nick Fury series more than a Daisy Johnson one. Moreover, it is mainstream Nick Fury (i.e., he is a white guy - there is a great moment in SPIDER-MEN, where the Spider-Man from the Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker, travels to the Ultimate universe, where Spider-Man is the extremely young Miles Morales - for reasons I won't go into, Nick Fury is aware of the incursion by another Spider-Man, a Nick Fury who was drawn to look like Samuel L. Jackson several years before he was approached to play Fury in the movies; Miles asks Peter if there was a Nick Fury where he came from, and asks what he was like, to which Peter replies, "Uh, white", causing Fury to add, "Sorry to hear that."Stories are told and retold in the Marvel (and DC) Universe, so there will probably never be a final great Nick Fury or Howling Commandoes story, but if you wanted a candidate for such a story this might be it. Daisy Johnson might be on the cover of one of the volumes, but there is no doubt that it is primarily a story about Nick Fury and his Commandoes, and the generations that are supplanting them.

Upon hearing about a book about a bunch of covert ops teenagers with superpowers you may think this has a traditional superhero feel. You would be wrong. This is a truly wonderful and gripping spy drama with action scenes sprinkled in sparingly. The story is intense; this is not your granddad's comic series! The characters are well thought out and the ever-evolving chemistry between them a the level of engrossing that only Hickman could provide. If you are looking for an impossibly cool and serious espionage story, look no further!!!

This was the perfect short right before bed.After an embarrassing situation at her sister’s wedding, Keira has been trying to get Logan out of her mind and system. She’s hoping that a 1Night Stand might do the trick. Boy is she surprised when the one person she’s trying to get over, is on the other side of the hotel room door.Logan was a raging alcoholic who drank to escape his feelings. So when he can’t even remember what happened the night everything changed, he makes the decision to become sober. Making amends to those he’s hurt (his list) is something is working on, but he didn’t think he’d get the chance to make amends with the one person he truly loves so soon.Lots of emotions in this one, but like I said, it’s so short and to the point that it’s all good.*I was given a copy of this book as a gift from The JeepDiva in exchange for an honest review.

By Dana Volney The emotional depths of “Lucky Traveler” by Lola Karns was a nice surprise and well done as I felt what Logan and Keira were going through when they each showed up for an arranged date with a stranger and instead found themselves with the person they were trying to excise from their systems. Their bad break up (which might be an understatement of the word “bad”) had them each grappling with their own issues and insecurities. Karns expertly dealt with the journey of reconnecting with a lot of steam woven in! The story, although a novella, was a fulfilling one and I will be reading more by this author!

I got it on a day when it was free.This is NOT a cook book for an amateur. The ingredients and instructions are incomplete, confusing, and, more often than not, just about impossible to understand.I've been cooking for 46 years and, given time and the desire, could probably figure out what was actually meant in the ingredients and instructions for these recipes. Finding the time and desire is rather unlikely. I may, possibly, be able to flip through it for recipe IDEAS to base my own preparations on, but can't see myself trying to interpret the actual "recipes" in this book.Instructions like "Prepare oven"...(yes, that is the ENTIRE instruction) that don't tell you what temperature to set it to, and instructions to "put it in the pan and prepare it for 7 minutes (no heat level mentioned either, and the fact that this needs to be an oven safe pan wasn't mentioned) and "return to pan and prepare for 10 more minutes...leave a lot to be desired.Ingredients like "beef - halved" ...OK. HOW MUCH BEEF? WHAT KIND OF BEEF? Is this beef supposed to be raw or pre-cooked?One "recipe" even calls for buying frozen mashed potatoes. Really? Are mashed potatoes THAT HARD to make that you can't make some for this recipe?If I had paid ANYTHING for this book, I'd be demanding my money back. I can't recommend this book to anyone.

Ultimate Chicken Cookbook: 365 Chicken Recipes with All in One Chicken Cookbook By Robert Sampson There was no oven temperatures listed for the recipes. I would have liked to make Chicken Teriyaki, but cook until done doesn't tell me if the oven temperature should be 350 degrees, 375 degrees or 400 degrees. I'm disappointed this information isn't listed and no calorie information either!

Wish I could give 0 stars By Bookgrrl Truly awful cookbook, and it's really a shame that the author clearly had friends & family give all these glowing five star reviews (notice how they all have similar writing?). The recipes are incomplete & poorly written. All the recipes so far give no real cooking directions (states "cook for 20 minutes" or "prepare for 10 minutes" with no heat guidelines, and "bake for 40 minutes" with no temperature stated in any recipe. If I bake at 300 degrees vs. 450 degrees there's going to be a big difference). There's a recipe for "Roast sticky chicken rotisserie style" that calls for a whole chicken, but the directions call for chicken breasts, and baking for 5 HOURS!! Am I trying to make charcoal? In addition, there are multiple recipes that include beef, but don't say what cut, the directions literally state "Beef, 4 slices". Last time I went to the grocery store there was more than 1 kind of beef product available...Don't waste your time on this garbage!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Really Impressive work. By J. Mason I don't want to say it has a twighlight feel, because that's not what this book is. However, it had a voice that reminded me of the twighlight world without the second rate vampires.This is not light reading. It's dense and meaningful. One of the best works of prose I've read in a while. The author's world of imagination is so detailed that nearly every scene is a sensory experience. Just overall a can't miss. In fact, I need a paperback for my techno snob son, cause I think he would love this.

Didn't want to stop reading By Nanette Lot’s Mountain may be categorized as a YA novel, but I (as a far-from-teenage reader) kept forgetting that as it totally sucked me in. The story-telling is eerily wonderful, the adventure engrossing, and the characters riveting. Even after finishing the book, I find myself thinking about Dylan, the hero, and his magical world. On my “don’t want to put this book down” scale, Lot’s Mountain gets the highest marks.

By Tina Chan Reviewed by Jenny on behalf of The Book LandersThe premise of The Virginia Kingdom Chronicles intrigued me, with its parallel storyline and court intrigue. I'm biased toward complicated plotting and mechanisms, and enjoy various takes on the futuristic genre, so I had high expectations for this book. The writing also seemed to suit my taste quite well, though there were some inconsistencies. That's probably part of the reason the rating skews a bit low on the scale.I admit that the timelines confused me, since we start off in 1992 and then switch to 2190 without a clear lead-in. The transitions are in generally marked with the year at the top of each section, with a few exceptions, but the twentieth century section eventually seems like a redundant backstory. Espen Koning's story and Elise Koning's story are interlinked by virtue of a shared last name, but otherwise the tones (nervous escape from a temperamental drug dealer, bildungsroman of a spoiled girl destined to become a great queen) don't match. Setting-wise, the twenty-second century portion is pretty interesting because it demonstrates the retrograde of society, but the references to mutant strains threw me off.Onto the characters, which form the backbone of the story: As the heir, Elise knows a lot of people, and I started off needing to reread every few pages to get a better sense of the who's who of the colonies. It gets easier after Elise figures out what she really wants (the ability to rule well, not the ability to embarrass the other ladies). The character development is a bit truncated, as both Elise's and Joshua's personality changes are somewhat abrupt. I would've liked to see their romance expand in a more natural and less physical way, especially since their previous relationships were pretty physical. I was somewhat surprised that a monarchial society would accept such conduct, but then again, there was Justin and his consort, and Queen Helena (some of my favorite characters from this story).The plot picks up in the latter half of the novel, and I found myself rooting for Lady Elise and her warder friend. I liked how Lucy has so much power during the court case, and I liked how the underdog lawyer is able to construct a strong defense for Elise. Usually in court intrigue-type stories, crimes are covered up without any witnesses, and people don't bat an eye, but he makes sure to question everyone's intention.There are a lot of things to like about this book. After Elise realizes that she needs to learn from Professor Rhroder, she commits herself wholeheartedly. A bit of her former personality reappears when she tricks Joshua, but she admits her mistake and doesn't hold a grudge. And the ending––I did not expect that at all. There's this whole series of twists, and just when I thought I knew what was happening, I realized I didn't. The real mastermind is shrewd and hides crime easily, though I need Elise to come back and take back the throne. The people are waiting for her, and I'm kind of excited for the showdown.L.L. Livesey is a promising author, and I'm expecting a lot more from her future books!

If her first book is any indication of what this series will be like, I can't wait to see what happens next. This book revolves around many people but mostly the Koning family and set in the year 2191, 200 years after an event know as "The Black Harvest". The country is shattered and abandoned by the U.S. Government. And is transforming itself into a sovereign monarchy. During the course of this book, you watch Lady Elise transform from what appears to be a selfish child to a compassionate woman. So please, get this book and help support an author starting out. You won't regret it. Pick up this book and be transported away to another time.
