Review "The idea of a talent as a result of DNA alteration created room for so many creative possibilities, but Tyner didn't just make it sound creative. She made it sound like science. It was like X-Men meets Harry Potter." - Brit Rosse, Reader's Favorite

Must read By Sam Mirza I received a free e-copy of this book from the author in exchange of an honest review. To start off, I want to say that I really enjoyed reading this book. It was better than I anticipated it being. I have to say, I have never read a book quite like this one. It was an adventure. I fell in love with the characters, felt what they felt and really understood them and their struggles, especially the main character’s: Sadie. Sadie, and other people at the Orphanage are Caelians. Caelians are people with altered DNA and gifts that are called Talent. Some talents include: invisibility, strength, fire bending etc. Because of this difference, Caelians are treated differently than normal human beings, or Norms. Almost every Caelian is left in the orphanage because no one want them. The thing is that Norms can have Caelian babies and they do not want them most of the time. This is what the kids at the orphanage have in common, they are not wanted by their family. Sadie is different. She has no talent…yet. This sets her apart from her peers.I actually really loved this book. I loved the characters and everything. Each character was very different and had their own struggles and I just love that they added so much to the story. I really loved how Sadie had the best friends. They were awesome and they stuck to her no matter what happened…and a lot happened in the book. It was just heart-touching see how much they cared about Sadie. Don’t get me started on Kian. Hes so HOT! I’m sorry…I’ll control myself. He is sooo amazing and I just love him. He’s so mysterious and oh gosh he is mine. Everyone needs a Kian in their lives.I love the way Donnielle writes! It is so easy to follow and understand. Its good to know that this author writes so you don’t need to reread every line 20 times just to understand what she is saying. I loved the world she created. It is so colorful and I love how its not perfect, Its like our world today. Her story is so creative and It is a must read. It is amazing, has wonderful characters, a heck of a story line, and a smidge of romance that I loved. It was nice to see that the romance in this book wasn’t too much. I loved it. Amazing! It did make me swoon though…. :)Oh yeah…the ending and the events leading to the ending….It was a wild roller-coaster with twists and turns and drops that I did not see coming. The whole story builds up to this wild ride and the ending just left me sort of satisfied…because I need the next book…i want it now. But that ending…omg…..what. It has left me craving for the next book. I need it!As you can probably tell, I really loved this book! It was really good and I recommend this to anyone and everyone. Just pick this book up and start reading. I promise you will love it! Thank you for reading my review. I hope you found it helpful!

A simple story about a girl with a power has been done over and over again. That is absolutely not what I got. Instead this is a story about a new race of humans, a new type that was born of a meteorite striking earth. When it struck during World War 1, a mysterious substance sprayed out and covered a huge number of soldiers. Those soldiers ended up with what they call a “talent” and also with altered DNA. Now the Caelian’s are born with different color eyes, skin and hair, each with their own special power. The Norms can give birth to either other norms or Caelians. If they have a Caelian baby, then more often than not, they are taken at birth and put into Caelian orphanages to be raised by one of three major Caelian families. These are not your ordinary orphanages, instead think private schools.Sadie has recently lost her boyfriend to death due to bigotry between the Norms and the Caelians. She has been grieving for four months and finally is able to move on with her life-barely. With her best friend Madison, a fire manipulator and roomate, Rebecca, a siren, egging her on to get back into life, she accepts an invitation from her boyfriend’s norm brother and sister, Lacy and Michael, to attend a Caelian-Norm alliance party. There she meets Kian, an intense, but gorgeous, Caelian, who takes a pretty extreme interest in her. Sadie is one of those rare Caelian’s to reach her age(senior in high school) without finding her talent. When she discovers her own heritage(who her mother was), she has to fight to stay away from anything to do with it. And then one day she discovers her talent and it’s not like anyone elses. This story ended up being quite the thriller. There’s action, murders, and Sadie ends up with even more loss in her life, as well as almost losing her own life. And she falls in love again. I kind of had a problem with how fast she is able to fall in love again. Her boyfriend has only been gone less than six months and they had pretty much been together her entire life at the orphanage; it just seemed fast to me-especially with this being a series. I know she’s a teenager, but still. And that was the only problem I had with this book. And that’s because I ended up being intrigued and yes, even fascinated, with the new race of people, the prejudice from the normal people, and all the world building the author introduces. And I actually did enjoy the romance-when it wasn’t bothering me.Good characters(Sadie, Kian, Rebecca, Madison, Lacy, and Michael), interesting world building, and a unique premise, made this an excellent read for me. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. I would recommend this to young adult and adult readers of both urban fantasy and paranormal romance.I received a copy of this from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I could not "shake it off"! The story starts off the pace with the birth of the main protagonist. As Sadie is born, she is drawing her mother's Talent out of her in the process, thus leading to her mother's death. Her mother even feels that her baby is taking her Talent as she is being born. Now, Lucinda, Sadie's mother, has known that this would happen, because she saw it take place in a vision. To protect Sadie, Lucinda has her closest friend bring the baby to St. Vincent's, which is an orphanage for unwanted children who have a Talent. As far as the reader knows in the beginning, Sadie is the only orphan in the home who does not have a Talent.Sadie states that she is a little introverted, even for someone living amongst "the rejected" of the community. She is not the average Caelian, as her skin and hair are different from the usual colors. Sadie is also undergoing grief-recovery after her boyfriend is murdered. Just when things look like they could either get worse, or worse than that. . . But you would have to read the book to truly find out for yourself. My Rating:I rate this book a 5 of 5 stars; the plot was brilliant! I found myself captivated. The flow of the writing was fantastic, characters were developed; the climax brought me to a place where I thought it would not have anymore to give at the ending, but it did! I have grown fond of Sadie's character. I think she is brilliantly created. The plot from start to finish was amazing! This was such a fantastic read. Thoroughly recommend that you pick it up, and be sure to give the author some love.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. just my opinion By Rod Rob There are three skills that distinguishes Mr Janney from the common gifted author:First, he does an exceptional job at giving his characters...well, character. You like the "good guys" and hate...Tank.Second, he paints a vivid picture as the story unfolds but he leaves out just enough detail to allow the reader to create their own picture - like a movie in our minds (I think this is why movies made from books just arent as good to me as the book - that and a movie can't build characters like a book - see point one)Three, much like John Grisham, Mr Janney doesn't waste our time providing non-essential information (i.e. filler). This keeps the story moving at a good pace - some readers equate action with pace but I've read action packed thrillers that plod along because the author thinks they need to explain every little detail (see point two).I was not given a free copy for my review nor do we belong at each other's family reunions, nor do we swap Christmas cards. i'm also not a wackjob like the reviewer who calls his books "stupid" - I am however a 50 year old man who apparently enjoys reading YA books - well Mr Janney's books at least - and if readers give this series a shot, move aside Hunger Games because you have company.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Totally exhausted. By K I read when I was supposed to be working. I read when I was supposed to be studying. I read when was supposed to be eating. But, mostly, I read when I was supposed to be SLEEPING. The rare sequel that outperforms the original. Sorry, Hunger Games. Sorry, Divergent. Sorry, Percy Jackson. THE OUTLAW is definitely my new favorite series!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. it's like John Hughes, Mike Lupica, and Frank Miller met in a bar By H. Bala Alan Janney is a homie you want by the campfire. He can spin a yarn, never mind that he frustrates me some with this sequel. On the strength of his Outlaw series, he's carving a steady swathe thru the teen superhero prose genre. Infected: Die Like Supernovas picks up a few months (three?) after the events of The Outlaw: Origins. With this sequel, it's like Janney rolls with the Texas motto: go big or go home. That in mind, he paints a larger canvas. He expands his worldbuilding. He introduces a passel of relevant characters. He ups the stakes. And, at last, we learn the origin of the Outlaw's super powers. It's the year 2018 now. In the intervening months, the street-level vigilante, the Outlaw, has become even more of a folk hero, and here's 18-year-old Chase Jackson trying to come to grips with his alter ego's celebrity and the onus that goes with it. Hidden Spring High's football season is over, and yet Janney finds ways to keep Chase involved in the sport. (You should know that in The Outlaw: Origins, football was as equally a vital plot point as were the superheroics.) Chase is still perpetually broke. He still wallows in love-lorn misery. He's still torn between his cheerleader girlfriend, the movie starlet, and his best friend, Katie. Except Katie is now stepping out with Tank, his nemesis on and off the gridiron. On the side, Tank still indulges in criminal shenanigans. But, for the Outlaw, there's bigger fish to fry. A new mastermind, the Chemist, is building an empire in southern Los Angeles on the strength of his powerful new drug. The most intriguing thing is that Janney sets up reveals along the way that open up Chase's superhero world in exciting ways. Yes, there's a shadowy society of superhumans that keeps tabs on folks like Chase. But are they really supers or are they victims? Keep in mind, part of the book's title is "Infected." Anyway, we learn more about why Chase is occasionally taken over by these sudden primal urges, these compulsions that push him to commit to wacked-out, death-defying behavior. On this front, I have two new favorite characters, and I can't decide whom I like better: the hacker or the sniper?Infected: Die Like Supernovas is sort of like The Empire Strikes Back to The Outlaw: Origins' Star Wars. It's darker and richer. The action ends up being bigger and bolder. The third act is bananas and leaves you craving more of everything. Janney sets you up for the third book, Sanctuary: Among Monsters, due sometime in late 2015. I rate this one 4 out of 5 stars because the bulk of Janney's storytelling is seriously on point. Despite the high school angst, there's grit in the narrative and this sense of things spiraling out of control. The only thing that bugs me is why in hell doesn't Chase just 'fess up to Katie about his true feelings, instead of always halfway flirting and talking around the subject? And why not tell her that he's the Outlaw? There's his big, fat excuse - which I just don't buy - of "Oh, she won't believe me." C'mon, son. Other than that, this is quality teen superhero prose.

Review To some, this may seem like a book about flying. But this book is SO much more than that. What I really enjoyed about this book was that it wasn't really a "standard utopian and/or dystopian trilogy". Another thing that I also liked was that the ending made sense. So many times have I read a book with an ending that left you thinking "What was this author thinking?!?!". The groundwork for the ending is literally tucked into the first chapter, not rushed into the second to last one. Amazon Reviews

But this book is SO much more than that. What I really enjoyed about this book was that it wasn't really a "standard utopian and/or dystopian trilogy". Not to say dystopian/utopian trilogies aren't great and all, it just gets repetitive. This book (the first in a trilogy) is really unique and different because it is a thriller/mystery with a side of adventure. It is a new genre idea which makes me VERY excited for the next two books of the series (Storm Chaser here we come!!!!). Another thing that I also liked was that the ending made sense. So many times have I read a book with an ending that left you thinking "What was this author thinking?!?!". The groundwork for the ending is literally tucked into the first chapter, not rushed into the second to last one. This book was also very easy to visualize, which made it a good read. Spirit Dance doesn't take a long time to get started, and you'll have a very hard time putting it down.My only complaint is that Storm Chaser is not already in stores. I can't wait!!

She's left with physical and emotional scars and a strong desire for revenge. Uprooted from her home, school and friends, Tana is enrolled in a new school, one where she is expected to take her place in the pilot's seat. A freak storm leaves her and a hunky fellow student in a strange community off the grid. Are they safe? Will they be able to leave? Who can they trust? There are numerous editing issues with the book, especially the difficulty in discerning who is speaking during conversations. True to the Young Adult genre, the characters sometimes make wild leaps in logic and behavior, but that is standard in these books. I enjoyed the story and cared about Tana. The ending seemed a tad rush. Still, this is a worthwhile read.

It was a little technical on the flight side, but it was nice learning something new as I read. The story was not predicable which I really enjoyed. There are a couple of typos that bothered me though, which is why it doesn't get five stars, she uses the phrase 'couldn't care less' twice incorrectly in the book. I can't wait for the next two though to learn more about Tana and her adventures in bringing her father's murderer to justice.

I actually recommend reading Four first. It's the comets set. My 13 year old triplet boys started reading this series in school. They couldn't stop talking about it, so I bought this series for them, and I even read it myself. It's very, very good. The movie is pretty good too; although, the books are a lot more detailed. I highly recommend this series. I would caution for younger readers as the two main characters have some heated moments. Nothing that heavy, but on the line. I wouldn't want my 8 year old reading something like that. I hope this review has been helpful for the parents out there. All in all.. Definitely a great series! A Must Read!

Good story-telling that also makes you think By LifetimeStudent We checked out Divergent from our local library for my grandson, but my daughter and I enjoyed it also. We definitely wanted to read the rest of the trilogy, so when I found this set that also includes the bonus book Four, I pre-ordered it. My daughter and grandson have finished the entire set and I am almost through Allegiant. I highly recommend this trilogy to any reader 13+ who enjoys science fiction, adventure, stories set in the future, or just plain old good story-telling that will also make you think. I would also recommend this as a good series for a family to read and discuss together.

For me, the great characters and intriguing storyline is what kept me reading. Be ready to smile, frown, laugh, and cry - the characters of the Divergent series are wonderfully captured and translated, growing more mature and depth as the story moves forward.Recommendation: Read Tobias' Collection of Four Short stories before starting the second book "Insurgent" as it will provide much needed background on Tobias' life. You will understand much more about his character and his choices.Thank you, Mrs. Veronica Roth, for writing a very enjoyable book series. I know all stories have an end, but I will miss reading about Tris, Tobias, Christina, and the rest of the characters. Good job!

Father Henson's Story of His Own Life, by Josiah Henson

About the Author Harriet Beecher Stowe was an American author and abolitionist. Born in Litchfield, Connecticut, she was raised in a deeply religious family and educated in a seminary school run by her elder sister. In her adult life, Stowe married biblical scholar and abolitionist Calvin Ellis Stowe, who would later go on to work as Harriet s literary agent, and the two participated in the Underground Railroad by providing temporary refuge for escaped slaves travelling to the American North. Shortly before the outbreak of the American Civil War, Stowe published her most famous work, Uncle Tom s Cabin, a stark and sympathetic depiction of the desperate lives of African American slaves. The book went on to see unprecedented sales, and informed American and European attitudes towards abolition. In the years leading up to her death, suffering from dementia or Alzheimer s disease, Stowe is said to have begun re-writing Uncle Tom s Cabin, almost word-for-word, believing that she was writing the original manuscript once again. Stowe died in July 1, 1896 at the age of eighty-five.1789-1883

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. an escaped slave's dealing with slavery, adversity, pride. By A Customer josiah henson was used as a model for harriett beecher stowe's uncle tom. however he was very different from uncle tom. he was very proud, ambitious, driven by his convictions, and was very creative in efforts to improve himself, his family, and the lot of escaped slave families in canada. he wrestled with his strong christian faith, his pride, and his rather dishonest masters. but he persevered in inspiring fashion. among his achievements were cooperative effort to establish a manual labor school, a sawmill, learning to read from his oldest son, becoming an accomplished methodist preacher, and marketing black walnut lumber in boston and england. the bishop of canterbury asked him which university he had attended, and josiah henson replied "the university of adversity." his children must have been one of his best endeavors, and i suspect that this is reflected in the title of the book.
