Patrick, a civil engineer, and Heather, a legal secretary, decided on a change of lifestyle. They built a 42' fiberglass sailboat from scratch in their garden in "an almost improbable" three years. They packed up their two children, Jeremy, 16, and Erica, 12, and headed out for a 14-month and 15,000-mile adventure around the Pacific. They harbor-hopped down the Californian and Mexican coasts, crossed the South Pacific, visiting the Marquesas Islands, Tuamotu atolls, Tahiti and the Society Islands. Departing from Bora Bora they headed back north visiting the Hawaiian Islands. For a temperature change and, not the usual route home, they continued north to view tidewater glaciers in Alaska before returning to Vancouver.

By Chanticleer Book Reviews Family, love, and adventure are all tied together in Patrick Hill’s alluring travel memoir "Home on the Waves." It’s a story set in the 1970’s that provides remarkable insight into the lives of a family exploring the open ocean and discovering new cultures and people. Hill’s memoir is an excellent read for everyone interested in reading about out-of-the-ordinary lifestyles and family adventures, even if they have never set foot on a boat.As a previous liveaboard and fellow sailor, I enjoyed reading a story that showed the family’s journey in becoming familiar with the sea. Their adventure starts with Patrick, a civil engineer, sitting in his office reliving fond memories of his days on the water. He decides to take action and create more treasured memories and to share his love of sailing with his wife and children. That momentous decision will disrupt his normal life with its mortgage almost paid off and a boss not expecting him to ask for an extended leave of absence just so he could go sailing. From start to finish, we see every step of Patrick and his family’s adventures in building the boat and getting it into the water. I particularly liked watching them build the boat in the backyard, and reading about all the BBQs they had and the friends they made (and neighbors they probably annoyed). A novel and compelling addition to this engaging memoir is his incorporation of his family’s perspectives. His wife, Heather, and his children Jeremy and Erica, voice their experiences, including both the happy memories and the frustrations of living together on a 42-foot sailboat with one head (toilet) over fourteen months and across 15,000 miles at sea while moving at an average speed of five miles per hour. This family travel memoir uses some technical terms of boating and lingo of sailors, adding to the genuine nautical ambiance of the story. I found it fascinating to read about sailing during the 70’s before computer technology was available to individuals. Cell phones, personal computers, chart-plotters, “epirbs” for satellite location, and other gadgetry didn’t exist. Noon sights had to be taken from hand-held sexton for navigation, printed charts were a must, and de-salinator water makers were not readily available, so gathering rain water using tried and true methods was essential. What really makes this memoir a special gem are all the nuances incorporated into the chapters. I learned about pleasingly random things such as how to make limes last longer and on which side to wear a flower in your hair when attending local festivities. As well, Hill is unflinchingly honest about the less glamorous aspects of sailing: trash on the shores, paying people off to get gas, and long johns. Are you wondering what they are (and they are not what you think they are)? Join Hill and his family to find out.The Hill family definitely was at home on the waves as they sailed down the coast from Vancouver, British Columbia to Mexico, over to the Marquesas, on to Bora Bora, and finally, back north to Alaska. As I sailed with them, I kept an atlas nearby to orient myself to major points. This gave me a deeper “armchair adventure” to the South Pacific and to Alaska. I was engaged quickly and then transported because there was never a dull moment in this Pacific sailing adventure and Hill graciously supplied photographs of the family's journey."Home on the Waves" brings life to exotic cultures, sailing, and family life in 1970’s America. It’s a true story that will inspire readers to seek their own adventures and find ways of making dreams come true. Here’s to the Hill family and their adventures, their boat, "Sky One Hundred," and to all those who follow their dreams.

Review PRAISE FOR THE ENEMY "Descriptive and suspenseful."―School Library JournalPRAISE FOR THE ENEMY The Enemy grabs you by the throat . . . and bites off your ear. It's kids versus zombies and no one is playing nice. The action--and boy, is there action--takes us through a London transformed by the unexplained illness that has turned every adult into a shuffling, drooling, kid-crunching machine. Bonus: zombie royals. Sheer fun."―Michael Grant, author of the Gone seriesPRAISE FOR THE SACRIFICE "Death, religion, friendship, survival, power, politics, and fear are explored throughout this installment. The storylines run full speed ahead in this horrifying page-turner. The solid writing is, at times, brilliant . . .The unanswered questions will prime readers for the next in the series." ―VOYAPRAISE FOR THE ENEMY "Lord of the Flies with zombies...tons of nail-biting action."―Rick RiordanPRAISE FOR THE ENEMY "...the action is of the first order-Higson writes with a firestorm velocity that inspires to the sweeping reach of Stephen King's The Stand."―ALA Booklist

About the Author Charlie Higson is an acclaimed comedy writer, producer, actor, and genuine James Bond aficionado. He is the author of the adult thrillers Full Whack and King of the Ants; the internationally best-selling Young Bond series: SilverFin, Blood Fever, Double or Die, Hurricane Gold, and By Royal Command; and six books in the Enemy series. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic By oneswtredhead I had this book preordered since Christmas and had been waiting endlessly for it to arrive to my kindle. I was not disappointed when it came yesterday and I began to read it. I ended up being so excited for it that i read it in three and a half hours. I absolutely love this series and this book was my favorite. Charlie Higson is an artist with his words. He drags you into the story and you develop bonds with each and every character. You feel sorrow when someone dies, you feel the fear of the unknown, you feel the thrill of battles and the triumpth of victory. You become this entity within the story that is there, but no one in the story knows that you are. You experience everything that the characters do, you become best friends with them. Not many authors can do this for their readers, and this is why Charlie Higson is one of my favorite authors. This series is fantastic and I recommend it to everyone. I am slightly disappointed that the next book is the last. I am saddened that it is ending because it is so hard to find a series as amazing as this one is, yet I am ecstatic that i was able to find this series and enjoy it so much. You did one hell of a job on this series Charlie, I congratulate you and wish you much success in life. I can't wait for the last book and i hope you continue to write many more series after this one, as i will be reading whatever you write. I will reread this series many times over, because it is so astounding that it gets better and better everytime. Charlie, you have done an amazing job on this series and I congratulate you for your success. For anyone who is unsure about this series, I will tell you that you will be not be disappointed with it. I fell in love with this series five pages into the first chapter of the first book. It is amazing to read and I recomend it with 20/5 stars.

Spoiler Free Review (Another Gem in the Enemy Series) By Matt As a preface, I am a 26 year old adult, and I've been reading this series from the beginning. If you think that this is only a children's book or a young adult novel, you'd be mistaken. I think anyone from age 12 onward can read this series and connect with it.Onward to the review. This is another spectacular installment in the Enemy series, it wraps up a lot of loose ends much more so than any of the other books so far. The main reasoning is because this is the penultimate book in the series. The story mainly follows Ed, who if you don't remember, is a boy originally from Rowhurst academy who, along with his friends, calls the Tower of London home. The Fallen saw Ed and his companions who were searching for Sam's sister, Ella, finally making it to the Natural History Museum just on the heels of Ella having left there with Maeve, Robbie, and Monkey-Boy.The Hunted picks up right where that story left off with Ed trying to organize a crew to accompany him on his mission to find Ella. The great thing that I really love about this series is how well Charlie Higson interweaves all of his story lines. Prominent characters with somewhat differing story lines tend to intersect unexpectedly, and suddenly The Tower of London kids' story and the Waitrose kids' story become one. You'll find more of the same in this book with surprising bits of info about the fate of several beloved characters, and other previously independent characters will finally meet. My other favorite aspect of the series is the no-holds barred gore and death. One of the reasons I think this series will never be adapted to the screen is the gore and death surrounding children sometimes no older than 9 or 10 years old. It would have to be along the lines of The Hunger Games films. This book offers a glimpse into what is happening outside London, and once again we start gathering more and more tidbits of information about what caused the disease. Along the way, the kids learn that people in their late 80's and older also seem to be unaffected by the disease. We catch glimpses of what the situation is like at Windsor Palace and other places like Bracknell and Slough.Once again, this book will have you on the edge or your seat with very few slow moments. This book also shows many parallels with The Fear in that Dognut lead an expedition to find lost friends, and now in the Hunted (and the Fallen) we've seen how Ed takes command and leads his crew in search of Ella. It's interesting to watch what Ed does and think about what Dognut did or didn't do and compare the outcomes.Enjoy the book and the series. I can't wait for "The End"

Great bookNow this book really was my second-favorite book in this seiries behind the dead the book starts with ella NOT DEAD!!! I was realyglad annyway in exacly 49% in the book it swiches to Ed and his crew Brook,Lewis,Ebenezer,Kyle,Macca and trinity along with Ed. The book was overall great and I have read it about fifteen times so why not five stars? Well I don't know if I can agree with Charlie Higson about that.I really hope in the next book is that Charlie Higson finishes the seires with an amasing end great book.

But let's be straight water is just too plain, specially if you've been drinking sodas and juices all your life. Infused water is a great way to "tricking" you taste buds. You have the flavor of the the ingredients you put in you water but none of the excess sugar and chemicals. It also provides all the vitamins and minerals. A lot of recipes in this book, not only are they great tasting, they also have benefits. Losing weight, more energy and a lot more. I can't wait to try out more of the recipes here.

The story of Virginia Wagner will capture you, as you follow her journey from a misfit as a young adult, to how she discovered her passion and calling, as a commercial maritime Captain of both sailing ships and super yachts. What makes this story different is how she often eschewed today’s high-tech equipment, preferring to use traditional skills, such as a sextant, the sun, and the stars to find her way. Captain Wagner braved challenges thrown at her from Mother Nature, as well as skepticism in a man’s world, relying on her own wits and spunk to overcome, and rose to teach those around her all she knew of oceanography and astronomy, and life in general. Captain Wagner found her own true love in the course of her worldwide ocean travels. Follow this amazing woman’s story as she fearlessly conquered a profession she never dreamed of before she bumped into it, but also broke down both personal and professional barriers in a once men’s-only club, to rise to be titled as ‘one of the best sea captains the industry has known’. Raising Sails and Eyebrows will do just that, make you sit up and listen as this story doesn’t disappoint; rather it dazzles with adventure, enterprise and mettle.

Excellent By Wild Bill Words cannot express the gratitude we have for Kylie Tomlin writing this amazing biography about, and with, our sister Virginia Wagner. Reading about the treacherous waters and hurricanes she's been through in work and in life makes me even more proud of her. May she rest in peace. "One of the best sea captains the industry has known".

After a year of studies at the University of Texas Law School he began a career as a publisher and bookseller in Austin. Between 1963 and 1990 the Jenkins Publishing Company, including the Pemberton Press for trade publishing and the San Felipe Press for private publishing, produced more than three hundred titles, several of which Jenkins wrote or edited. In 1965 he compiled and published Cracker Barrel Chronicles: A Bibliography of Texas Town and County Histories, a comprehensive listing of five thousand titles, which won the Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History. I'm Frank Hamer : The Life of a Texas Peace Officer By A Customer It has been many years since I first read this book and I found it very informative. I am sure there are bound to be some errors but on the most part it is historically accurate. It is not only about ending Bonnie and Clyde's murderous spree but about the man that did it and how he became a Texas Police Officer and came up through the ranks to become one of the greatest Texas Rangers who ever lived. The review written by anomie@mail.com, is total bull written buy someone who evidently prefers to believe the glamorized version of the Bonnie & Clyde movie. I have been a Texas State Police officer for 23 years and have read some of the actual reports of Bonnie and Clydes exploits and to contradict anomie@mail.com, Bonnie and Clyde deserve no respect as stated by anomie. Anomie needs to be better informed of the facts before making reviews. Sorry for the rant but I hate for anyone to bad mouth a great man and take up for a couple of cold blooded illiterate killers who were glamorized by Hollywood as a cute loving couple out for a Sunday drive.

I've heard a lot of rants from misguided Bonnie and Clyde fans about the book's alleged inaccuracies. Well, there hasn't been a book on Bonnie and Clyde or Depression outlaws published to date (including my own!) that hasn't had some drastic errors in it, one reason being that most of the books, including I'm Frank Hamer, draw heavily from the Fugitives, the ghosted 1934 memoirs of Bonnie's mother and Clyde's sister. I'm not one of these people who presume to know who killed the two highway patrolmen at Grapevine. It may have been Henry Methvin, Clyde Barrow, Bonnie Parker, or all three for that matter (ballistics evidence indicated three guns were fired). Nor am I one of those misguided worshippers of Bonnie and Clyde, who were really nothing more than a pair of two-bit, scatter-brained, trigger-happy psychos. But all that is neither here nor there, as this is not simply a "Bonnie & Clyde book." This is a biography, and a damn good one, of the man who tracked them down--Frank Hamer, who captured or killed dozens of other criminals and carried with him the scars, and much of the lead, from many gunfights with maggots of the Clyde Barrow sort. Hamer came out of retirement to run down the Barrow gang. The ambush of Clyde and Bonnie was the perfect closing of Hamer's career and a great service to America as well. It was the job he was made to do and one that had to be done. Forget Hollywood. The real Bonnie and Clyde were murderous criminals who deserved just what they got. And Frank Hamer was just the man to give it to them.

Mc Coy Ill start with I read this book because I have a interest in turn of the century-depression era law enforcement, that I have heard of the legend of CPT. Hamer, and have enormous respect for him. This is the only book I have found dedicated to his career. If only a quarter of the book is true, Ranger Hamer must have been a brave, skilled, and most importantly, smart lawman. That being said, the book does lead to a bit of "larger than life" description of his exploits. I wouldnt go as far as to use Mr. Sprunks assessment of "hero worship", but a liberal dose of added drama seems to be a better term, to me. I dont doubt that the incidents occurred, and its obvious who won, but the writer does tend to almost glamorizing the engagements. I doubt CPT. Hamer enjoyed or relished the incidents. I would think he, as the true professional he was, did what needed to be done in a manner consistant with his era. He used the force necessary to accomplish the task at hand. I dont feel todays standards of use of force issues can be applied to the times in question. Judging from some of the photos of the stacks of dead Mexican bootleggers, I dont doubt CPT Hamer had to use surprise, stealth and superior firepower just to survive. I defy anyone, in the same set of circumstances, not to use the same tactics...and not just survive, but win. Lets see anyone else face down 30 plus armed, violent criminals, intent only on their goal, with only a handful of men and get them to just surrender. Add in being miles from any friendly assests, medical aid, communications, transport/detention facilities, etc., in an unforgiving, hostile climate. More power to you if you do. I will never understand the obsession our society has with Bonnie and Clyde, but who am I to say? Suffice to say, they were psychotic, cold blooded murderers who dont deserve the underground following they have. What I can say is the right man was picked for the job to take them out. Standard attempts to take them into custody failed, with dead law enforcement officers in the wake. They were dumped exactly as the deserved. Too bad for their victims it didnt happen sooner. The saddest part is if the same situation happened today, the officers would probably be prosecuted themselves. Maybe thats one of the problems this country has today in dealing with violent, degenerate killers. In an era where every public figures dirty laundry, failings and shortcomings are daily news, we may mistake that this is just another attempt to make a hero out of someone who didnt deserve it. This book was written in a time where writers went out of their way to make a hero. I dont feel CPT. Hamers story needs any assistance in telling of his heroic career, but look at almost any other like bio of the times. I feel he was a brave and honest man, a hell of a lawman and a true hero. I think the book is more of a sign of the times it was written in. Did it all happen just like this? Doubtfull, but is everything written about Daniel Boone, George Washington, and other great American heroes always 100% accurate? Enjoy a great read, and a probably fairly accurate story. Just take it with a small grain of salt.
