Emmy & Oliver, by Robin Benway

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Emmy and Oliver were the best of friends up until the third grade, when Oliver disappeared, leaving their community forever changed. Years later, high school senior Emmy still lives next door to the house where Oliver lived with his mother and she has never been able to forget him. Emmy lives with the consequences of Oliver's kidnapping, as her parents smother her with rules and restrictions meant to keep her safe. She doesn't feel like she can be her own person with the weight of the past constantly influencing her life. But then one day, Oliver is back. He is grown up, guarded, and confused. Oliver thought that his mother had abandoned him, when in fact his father kidnapped him, and he was discovered by chance when he gives fingerprints on a school field trip. Although Emmy is a vaguely familiar face, he doesn't know how to bridge the time gap and find a place to belong in this community again. Oliver and Emmy try to do just that, amid the chaos surrounding Oliver's past and Emmy's uncertain future. The circumstances of this story provide a perfect setting to explore how two young people navigate new adulthood and forge new identities. This book is at times heartfelt, funny, irreverent, and ultimately satisfying. VERDICT Plot driven as well as introspective, it is a good choice for fans of Stephanie Perkins's Anna and the French Kiss (Dutton, 2010) or any of Sarah Dessen's novels.—Tara Kron, formerly at School Library Journal

Review Emmy & Oliver is wonderful. Funny, heartbreaking, and true... just like life. Robin Benway has written characters I felt like I’d known forever, and was so sad to see go. A must read. (Morgan Matson, author of Since You've Been Gone)“Robin Benway writes with her full heart. Emmy & Oliver is a genuinely sweet and funny novel bursting with the inextinguishable forces of love-between parents and children, distant and inseparable friends, new and reunited lovers.” (Stephanie Perkins, New York Times bestselling author of Isla and the Happily Ever After)“Benway examines split loyalties, the impact of confessionals, and how broken bonds can be mended… Benway’s intriguing premise and honest tone are a winning combination as she movingly portrays the growing trust between her characters.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“At times heartfelt, funny, irreverent, and ultimately satisfying… a good choice for fans of Stephanie Perkins’s Anna and the French Kiss or any of Sarah Dessen’s novels.” (School Library Journal)“Benway fearlessly examines the effects of loss and return from every perspective… Hope, confusion, frustration, and love coexist without shame as teens and parents come to grips with the realization that nothing stays the same no matter how desperately we want it to.” (Booklist)“Benway peels away the surface and digs down to the raw emotions the teens and their families feel… as a portrait of the emerging adolescent, it engages.” (Kirkus)“This realistic and painful story... twists and turns... until the bittersweet, yet perfect, ending. (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))“Emmy’s narration is smart and sassy, and the romance plot is satisfying... An unusual blend of a soulmate story, a melodramatic plot, and a realistic book about adjustment, growth, and change, this will please romance fans as well as pragmatic souls with a sentimental streak.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

From the Back Cover

Emmy just wants to be in charge of her own life.

She wants to stay out late, surf at her favorite beach—go anywhere without her parents' relentless worrying. But Emmy's parents can't seem to let her go—not since the day ten years ago when her best friend, Oliver, disappeared.

Oliver needs a moment to figure it all out.

He'd thought, all these years, that his father was the good guy. He never knew that his dad had kidnapped him and kept him on the run. Discovering it all at once—and returning to his old hometown—has his heart aching and his thoughts swirling.

Emmy & Oliver were going to be best friends forever.

They could have been even more, before their futures were ripped apart. To Emmy, despite the space and time between them, their connection has never been severed. But is their story still meant to be? Or are their hearts like the pieces of two different puzzles—impossible to fit together?

From that cover I thought I was going to get a sweet romance but it was more than that. It was about growing up, family and discovering oneself.Oliver and Emmy were next door neighbors and best friends if not on the way to becoming more but one day Oliver doesn't return after spending the weekend with his dad because his father decided to kidnap him. A decade later Oliver is found and his world is pretty much turned upside down. He was lied to by his father and doesn't know what to think anymore. He was a very conflicted character because a part of him still loved his dad very much regardless of what he did because his dad and the life he had with him was all he knew and now he finds out his mom didn't abandon him and he was missing the whole time he was living his other life not to mention because he was abducted at such a young age he barely remembers anyone including Emmy.As far as Emmy goes her life was affected deeply by Oliver's kidnapping. Besides the fact that she lost her best friend that day, her life would never be the same. Her parents are extra protective of her in fear of what happened to Oliver she has to sneak around to do the one thing she loves the most and there hasn't been a day that has passed that she hasn't thought of Oliver. Both characters were very likable and my heart broke for each of them for different reasons. I loved that the parents were not absent in their lives like a lot of young adult books, there was conflict on both sides between Oliver and his mom and Emmy and her parents. Also, two other notable characters that are worth mentioning is Caro and Drew they were Emmy's friends and also knew Oliver from when they were kids and I have to admit they were great friends with their own issues that they were dealing with.Overall this was a great coming of age story and I highly recommend it.

A halted friendship, paused for ten years, was so tragic and interesting that I was desperate to know how it played out By Teen Reads When Emmy is seven years old, her best friend and neighbor Oliver is kidnapped on a Friday after school by his father. For ten years, Oliver remains a ghost --- an invisible fixture in the community --- and one that haunts Emmy relentlessly, even as she tries to live her own life. The afternoon Oliver was kidnapped, he had signed yes on a note their best friend Caroline had written him: Do you like Emmy? Yes or No. And it’s that note that she keeps crumpled and worn in a secret place where not even her remaining best friends know about it. And just as she had been learning to have a life separate of his memory --- her parents had treated her like she was the one who disappeared all those years ago --- everything changes when Oliver is found again.Honestly, I was bit apprehensive about how I would like the book; I’ve been burned before by high concept ideas where the characters just didn’t live up to the world they were created in. I’ve also put down multiple novels where characters felt too young for their stories. Would this seem like a middle-grade novel masquerading as a YA? I’m happy to report that this wasn’t the case at all. I sometimes felt that Emmy’s voice was a little young but I quickly forgot about that as I rushed through the story. The idea of a halted friendship, paused for ten years, was so tragic and interesting that I was desperate to know how it would play out.Even as I fell in love with Emmy and Oliver’s easy banter and fell into the comfortable camaraderie of Emmy’s friend group, I was constantly aware of the issue at the heart of the book. Oliver was kidnapped when he was seven. His father stole him away from his mom and his life in California, going so far as to change his memory and keeping the truth for him as he grew. The book never strays away from that; instead, Robin handles it with aplomb, not ignoring the messy complexities of familial abduction.I think that while maintaining the heart of the story --- Emmy and Oliver’s stalled and revived relationship—Robin also confronts the main premise, and the reality: parental and familial kidnapping is real and it destroys lives. In doing so, Robin created a fictional tale that feels real, as heartbreaking and tragic as the stories on the news, except this time, we get an inside glimpse at the ones left behind.I also loved that Emmy wasn't a character who pined over Oliver the whole book. She was introduced as a character who was independent and trying to find her own place away from the gap that her best friend left in their lives. I really enjoyed her point of view throughout EMMY & OLIVER as she grappled with whether or not it was good that Oliver came back --- for her or for him.All in all, this is a story that felt light and enjoyable for a summer read but intense and rewarding as a page-turner. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book to anyone. I imagine it will be on many “Best Of” lists, as it should be. This story is important and wonderful and I look forward to the discussion and thoughts it will no doubt attract.Reviewed by Brianna Robinson

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Loved this Great YA Story! By Grace at Rebel Mommy Book Blog I feel like I waited forever to read this. I didn't. Just over a month. But I saw so many great reviews. I am pretty sure I saw only good things. Then I got scared because my expectations were through the roof. But alas, Emmy & Oliver came through and swept me off my feet.Emmy and Oliver were neighbors and best friends when Oliver was taken by his father when he was seven. Ten years later he is found and back next door.Since Oliver has been gone Emmy has pretty much been on lock down. Her parents, understandably, were very strict after Oliver's kidnapping. Some would think that might ease up over time but not for them. Since they are so overbearing Emmy, who truly is a good kid, has to sneak behind their backs at times. She loves to surf but her parents would never let her so she finds ways to go without them knowing. They want her to stay home for college so she has to apply to a different school without their knowledge.Oliver is totally shoved back into his home which really isn't his home anymore. His mother is remarried with twins. He doesn't really remember any of his old friends. Plus he has to deal with the news and media. And everyone knows high school sucks normally let alone having to go after coming back after ten years of being kidnapped. I felt really bad for Oliver. I can't imagine his thoughts and feelings. You could tell he still loved his dad despite what he did. He missed him. And it was hard for him to be part of this new family and be the person they thought he would be."Sometimes, the things people don't say are louder than the words that come out of their mouths."Emmy and Oliver together were adorable. They were a bit awkward as they should have been. Ten years and crazy circumstances dictate it being awkward. But they were so cute. Surfing helped them open up to each other. Also, Emily really was a great listener and Oliver trusted her. I was happy that he was able to talk to someone so he didn't completely freak out.Loved Caro and Drew who are Emmy (and at one point Oliver's) best friends. They were fun, supportive but still acted like teenagers. Which by that I mean they still fought a bit, struggled with the new dynamic of having Oliver back and did some dumb teenage things.I think the thing that really made this stand out from similar novels is the characters voices. I really felt like they were authentic. I may be a gazillion years removed from high school but it felt like how real high schoolers would talk, act and be with each other. If not it is how they should be. I would have wanted to be friends with them. The story is told from Emmy's POV. It moved along really quickly and I finished it within two days. I am so glad I got to this sooner rather than later as it really just hit on so many levels. And if you still haven't read it I highly suggest picking it up ASAP!

About the Author Born in 1972, Katherine, NT, Australia. Married with three children I have always loved to read in particular fantasy fiction. My favourite authors include JRR Tolkien, Robert E Howard, Stephen King, Raymond E Feist and the awesome Matthew Reilly. Growing up I was always a bit of a geek, in particular my love of comics and horror movies, something that has stayed with me well into my “mature years”. I was a soldier in the Australian Defence Force for nearly 20 years, having served on operations in Rwanda and East Timor, and later an instructor at the School of Infantry. I'm a qualified cinema graphic make-up artist, having trained under Oscar winner Peter Frampton. I had high aspirations of being the next Tom Savini. I enjoy keeping fit, reading and annoying my kids. I still love cheesy B grade movies in particular anything with zombies and I love hanging out with my brothers every chance I get, both of whom are successful writers in their own respective fields. Writing Perigord has been an immensely satisfying journey and one that has yet to reach its final destination.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An excellent first book. By Sam Mole Kelly Mole I really enjoyed this book. It had some great ideas and a clear storyline. However, I felt it rushed at some points, specifically the training scene.I read the kindle edition and there were a lot of spelling and grammar errors which could have a lot to do with the kindle translation as I've seen it in loads of other kindle books. All in all, it was a good read and Marc Lindsay is a very promising author. I feel there is room for his writing to evolve(Terry Pratchett's early books were a very different style to his later more popular books)and will continue to read his future books.

Hope #2 is coming out soon!!!!!

Hooligan @ Platypire Reviews I was given a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.First of all, I would like it known that I waited almost two years for this book. I had hyped myself up for it, so there were a lot of high expectations on my part. This book did not disappoint. There were several new characters, and they all fit right into the story. Although I would like it known that I shall refer to Eros as "buttface" until he proves himself otherwise.I both liked and wanted to smack Isis in this story for how she acted. I understand that she didn't have the full picture, and she was trying to do what she thought was for the best, but gawd damn. It was a nice relief to see a heroine struggling and not have everything together where it fits into place perfectly. Made her feel more realistic to me.There were times where I felt lost, as if I had missed something, but each time the answer came later on in the story. I'm a very impatient person. One thing I must say... expect feels. Because they're definitely in here.Speaking of feels... my least favorite part was the ending, because just that... it ended. I will need book three immediately so that I may continue reading this story, because I'm frustrated that I don't have it with me now.5/5 platypires

Best book in the series so far By Book Beetches Reviews I made no secret about how much I loved Creatura and if I'm being honest, I was afraid that the second book-like many before it- would fall flat. I shouldn't have worried. Fruit of Misfortune continues the story of the Creatura Isis and her greek god boyfriend, David, this time in Greece while they look for Isis' father and try to find answers before their transformation is complete and their death warrants are signed. The introduction of new characters creates new drama and intrigue for the pair, but don't discount the continuation of original character stories as well. All in all I couldn't put this book down until it was finished, and was blown away by Nely Cab's eye for detail. Be prepared to go on a journey emotionally as Isis finds the hero in herself, and learns what it means to make sacrifices for the ones we love most.

By Maribel @ Platypire Reviews ***I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.***There is so much I want to say and so much that I CAN'T! When it came to reading the end of the book, I had some colorful words for Nely, because how could she just leave us hanging like that?! I want, no, NEED the third book of this series, like now! But, I have to admit I'm enjoying this feeling of anticipation that cliffhangers always give me.Now that you know the ending made me upset (in a good way, haha), let's get on with what the rest of the book had to offer. We see a character that introduced in Creatura play a bigger part in this book. And let me just say I absolutely hate his guts. Who? Eros. He is a fricking creep who doesn't understand no means NO. N-to-the-O. He constantly harrasses Isis, even when she tells him to get away from her. This isn't okay with me, because it reminds me too much of rape culture. Just because you think a girl may be into you doesn't give you the right to force your unwanted attentions on them. So yeah. I hate Eros.A lot happens to Isis and David as they start their journey in search of Isis' biological father. They both are changing and it's hard not to reveal all the things they undergo without giving out spoilers. But just know that their relationship takes a very different path than the one I thought they would be on. I have to say I missed Claire (Isis' mom) in this book because is quite a quirky character. Hopefully we see more of her in the third book.Apart from the pest that is Eros, this book had me reading until I got to 98% and read Acknowledgements. That's when I realized there was no more story to read and I went on a verbal rampage. And because this book evoked such a strong reaction from me, I give it all 5 Platypires!
