A hot shade of lipstick calls for a hot, sexy guy…

Makeup artist Chloe Masterson has a look for every occasion. Flying home for your sister's wedding and family torture? Easy. Bring out the sarcastic wit and black eyeliner. Bonus—the look catches the eye of the corporate hottie sitting beside her on the plane. Turns out Ben has the exact same last name, and everyone assumes they're married.

When they get stuck in a hotel room together, Chloe decides to accept the gift the Fates have bestowed upon her. (Tip: a bold lip color does wonders for seduction.) But as their lies begin to snowball, Chloe and Ben find it harder and harder to distinguish between what's real and what's all just smoky eyes and mirrors.

About the Author Taryn Leigh Taylor likes dinosaurs, bridges and space, both personal and of the final-frontier variety. She shamelessly indulges in cliches, most notably her Starbucks addiction, her shoe hoard and her penchant for falling in lust with fictional men with great abs. She also really loves books, which is what sent her down the crazy path of writing one in the first place. For more on Taryn, check out tarynleightaylor.com, facebook.com/tarynltaylor1 and twitter.com/tarynltaylor.

"Do you want me to kick the crap out of that seat back and tray table for you?"Chloe Masterson looked over at Window Guy, the man that the Goddess of Economy Airline Seating had seen fit to plaster against her right side. The upper-arm contact had started in Seattle and lasted until Chicago. Thanks to bad weather, their scheduled forty-five-minute layover in the Windy City was now pushing two hours, and had featured a long wait in the plane deicing line and then a "that didn't sound good" thunk. The plane was now sitting motionless on a vast expanse of snowy tarmac and they'd officially hit the six-hour mark of their touching-a-stranger marathon fifteen minutes ago.It wasn't his fault, really. Window Guy had broad shoulders, so the contact was incidental and, in a weird way, kind of comforting. She liked that the sleeve of his gray wool suit was soft and warm against her skin. And okay, maybe she was leaning against him a little more than was .strictly necessary. Not because he smelled of spicy soap and warm man—which was a pretty wicked combination—but because he smelled better than the guy to her left. The gag-inducing aroma of stale sweat, onions and something else she couldn't quite place but preferred to leave a mystery had worn her down about twenty minutes after boarding. That's when Chloe had decided that the comfort of her left elbow wasn't worth permanent olfactory damage and had conceded the battle of the joint armrest to him.Damn middle seat."Sony?"Despite their close confines, she and Window Guy hadn't exchanged more than the official "that's-my-seat" gesture of air travelers the world over before he'd awkwardly shuffled past her to sit down. After that, he'd pulled his laptop out and tapped away at the keys like a good little company automaton while she'd worked her way through a few chapters of a gently-used Stephen King novel. She'd been so engrossed in her book, she hadn't noticed that at some point he'd put the laptop away and moved on to reading the offerings from the seat pocket in front of him.And that wasn't all she hadn't noticed. Now that she was actually looking at him, his breach of their companionable silence was even more surprising. Because Window Guy was kind of sexy. Bedroom eyes the color of whiskey and twice as potent. A strong jaw and a straight nose. His brown hair was short enough to be business-appropriate, but long enough to get mussed up under the right circumstances. And that mouth! As she took her fill of him, it pulled slightly up at the right corner in an easy smirk that was hot as hell. He was the clean-cut kind of handsome that came with no visible neck tattoos and an expertly-knotted blue silk tie that bespoke gainful employment.Men like him didn't talk to women like her. He was way too…corporate. And she was…not. At her question, he raised his chin at the worn gray vinyl seat back in front of her. "You've been giving that chair dirty looks for the last twenty minutes, and then you sighed," he explained."I did?"Window Guy nodded. "The sigh was pretty loud, actually. It disturbed my reading.""Oh. Well. I'm sorry that my sigh threw off your concentration." Chloe sent a meaningful glance toward the airline safety pamphlet on his lap."The damage is done." He picked up the tri-fold piece of card stock. "It was just getting good, too. After the cabin depressurized, the plane crashed and the passengers were proceeding in an orderly fashion for their lives!"Huh. She hadn't expected funny. Hot guys rarely had to develop such plebeian talents. "Sounds intense.""You're telling me. I was really enjoying it until the author got all kinky and made the heroine take off her high heels before she used the inflatable slide. I think he might be a foot fetishist." He shoved the pamphlet back in the seat pocket in front of him before he met her gaze with a teasing glint in his amber eyes. "Wow. Spoiler alert. I hope I didn't give too much away.""No, I appreciate the recommendation. I'll be sure to tell my book club about it."His grin was practiced, but appealing. "I'm Ben."Uh-oh. Time to nip this in the bud. "Well, Ben. You're a very handsome guy, and I appreciate the effort, because I'm sure that maneuvering a sober pickup with only a safety card, an in-flight magazine, and an airsickness bag as props is a challenge that few men could meet. But don't waste all your sweet, panty-dropping material on me. Save some of that A-game for Stewardess Barbie over there."They both looked at the perky blonde flight attendant who'd been making doe eyes at Ben since he'd boarded. Right on cue, she twirled her ponytail and glanced away coyly.Ben shifted, trying to arrange his large frame more comfortably in the tiny chair—a futile cause. "Let's get one thing straight here, if this had been a pickup, we'd already be—" he eyed his Rolex—so cliché "—three minutes into you becoming an airplane-bathroom sex convert. Let the record show that we are both still safely buckled into our designated seats, ipso facto, I clearly wasn't flirting with you."Ignoring the frisson down her spine—legal jargon always had that effect on her—Chloe raised a skeptical eyebrow."Okay, I was kinda flirting. But, it was completely recreational. Minor league stuff.""Oh, please! Foot fetish references? That is gateway flirting. If I hadn't called you out, you'd have escalated to the hard stuff—asking me my astrological sign and telling me how beautiful my eyes are."He laughed, and Chloe ignored the flare of pride at having elicited the sexy, rumbling sound. Not that she was flirting, either, mind you."Well, it's hardly my fault that your eyes really are beautiful. Emerald green, with golden flecks that sparkle when you roll them like that because you think I'm being cheesy.""Oh. Well that's probably because you are being cheesy. At least the safety pamphlet pickup was original.""Original enough to get your name?""Chloe," she relented."Nice to meet you, Chloe." He offered his hand again, and this time she accepted it.His palm was wide and his fingers were long. He didn't molest her hand; it was just an acceptable, firm shake between new acquaintances. Even so, a phantom warmth lingered after he'd relinquished his grip, the kind that buzzed up her arm and sort of made her wish he had molested her hand, at least a little. Chloe rubbed her tingling palm against the thigh of her jeans. His gaze held steady on hers and his focus was flattering, almost seductive. If you went for that whole slick-successful-businessman-in-a-five-thousand-dollar-suit look. Which, she reminded herself, she didn't. Not anymore. For the most part, her tiny diamond nose stud and purple highlights were enough to warn corporate wunderkinds that they had nothing in common with her.But then she remembered that she no longer had purple highlights. She'd dyed her piecey, deconstructed bob for her sister's wedding. Right now it was a respectable, boring, normal shade of mahogany that skimmed her jaw before angling a bit lower in the front. The dye job was her attempt at a peace offering to her family. She just hoped it would be enough."…so if you look at it that way, cheese could be considered a high form of flattery, you know?"Ben's voice snapped her out of a flashback of the most recent guilt-laden, middle-name-invoking phone call with her mother."What? Sorry. I wasn't listening."Ben's grin was endearingly self-deprecating. "Tough crowd.""It's not you." Chloe shoved her offensively monotone hair behind her ears. "Going back to Buffalo has put me in a rotten mood.""That doesn't seem fair. What's Buffalo ever done to you?"The derisive laugh slipped out before Chloe could stop it. "Now there's a loaded question."Ben cocked a questioning eyebrow."I'm going to see my family." She didn't add "for the first time in four years," because that was the scary part, the part that turned her stomach into a churning pit of nerves and dread. "My little sister's getting m-married," she said, forcing the word out. Man, was it hot in here? She reached up and twisted the overhead air vent open."Oh! Well, that should be…" Ben paused in a way that let Chloe know she hadn't managed to hide her true feelings on the matter. He corrected midcourse, "no fun at all. Rings are like tiny shackles. Screw love. That's what I say."It was a sweet attempt at a save, but Chloe was too far down the well to grab the rope."Weddings…" Suck. Wreck relationships. Ruin lives. She flipped through her mental thesaurus before going with, "aren't really my thing." She tugged at the front of her black T-shirt, but couldn't quite shake the sudden sensation of a phantom Swarovski-crystalencrusted, sweetheart-necklined noose tightening around her rib cage.Oblivious to her cold sweat and racing heart, Ben continued to aim for small talk. "It's a good thing you decided to fly in to Buffalo a few days early. This storm is really wreaking havoc on our arrival time."Chloe shook her head. "I'm not early. She's getting married tomorrow."Instead of the nauseating cheer that announcement had been garnering since her sister had started flashing her showy, four-carat diamond engagement ring around social media, Ben had the decency to look puzzled. Chloe appreciated that."Your sister's getting married on a Thursday in January?""You are only surprised by that fact because you've never met her," she informed him. "Anyone who knows my sister would expect nothing less from her than to inconvenience her entire network of family and friends by making them take a day off of work. Can't let a petty thing like the schedules of four hundred people interfere with her narcissistic, lifelong fantasy of having a winter wonderland-themed wedding on her birthday."Ben nodded. "So you and your sister are close, then?" he deadpanned.Chloe's smile caught her by surprise, but at least she could breathe again. He'd talked her down without even being aware of it. "You're a funny guy, Ben.""It's a gift." He shrugged with faux modesty and loosened his sapphire-colored silk necktie. The hint of di-shevelment made Chloe's breath hitch, but this time it wasn't the result of a chest full of anxiety. This feeling was warmer, and a little bit tingly. She hadn't dated a man in a suit since Patrick—hadn't even looked at one. She preferred bad boys, the disreputable kind that parents didn't approve of. So why was Mr. Future Businessman of America giving her a serious case of the wobblies? She didn't get a chance to scrutinize her odd reaction further. They both glanced up as an electronic chime sounded from the speaker above Chloe's head."Good evening, passengers. This is your captain speaking. Due to a mechanical issue and the impending storm, our scheduled flight has been canceled."A collective groan filled the plane."Your flight crew will be handing out discount cards valid for a stay at any Value Inn location, a proud partner of Jetopia. Your boarding pass will be valid for tomorrow's rescheduled flight to Buffalo, weather permitting. If you have further questions or are unable to make the 8:00 a.m. flight, please speak with a member of your flight crew. Again, we thank you for choosing Jetopia, and we apologize for the inconvenience.""What does he mean, tomorrow?" There was a definite note of panic in her voice, but Chloe was proud she'd managed not to shriek."I'm going to go out on a limb and guess he means the day after today.""Hey, Ben?""Yeah?""That thing I said about you being funny? I take it back."He waved it off. "As long as handsome panty-dropper still stands."She couldn't even appreciate the joke—reality was seeping in. "I can't be stuck in Chicago. I need to get to Buffalo. Tonight" The wedding rehearsal and dinner were this evening. Her family would be expecting her.Ben directed her gaze to the small oval window behind his head, and Chloe caught an ominous glimpse of the snow flying outside. "Better start walking then."Chloe took a deep breath of musty cabin air tinged with eau de Aisle Guy's pits. Trapped. She glanced over as Ben liberated his iPhone from the breast pocket of his suit, thumbs flying over the screen as he, like so many other passengers, shared the details of this latest development with whoever was on the other end of the text message.Chloe couldn't bring herself to do the same. She hadn't even arrived yet and she'd already failed to meet her family's expectations. Not an auspicious start to her big reunion tour. With another sigh, she flopped back in her chair, glaring once again at the seat in front of her. She was stuck in Chicago. With boring hair. And an angry clan of Mastersons ready to pounce on her for the latest example of how she was ruining the hallowed family name. This day could not possibly get any worse."You're doing it again.""Doing what?" she asked, her eyes never wavering from the cracked vinyl seat back."Sighing maniacally," Ben explained."You seem awfully intent on the emotional health of complete strangers." She slanted him a look that bordered on caustic. "You're not a shrink, are you? Because my talking to a shrink would make my mother ridiculously happy.""And how does that make you feel?"In a defensive maneuver, Chloe crossed her arms over her chest. "Okay, fine. You're a little funny."Ben pumped his fist in silent victory."And for the record, I was thinking about how Neil Diamond has ruined my life."He shot her a surprised glance. "Really? I was wondering what he was up to these days."She tipped her head in Ben's direction without breaking contact with the headrest. "It's a very sad story about a crappy alarm clock, a pathological hatred of 'Sweet Caroline', and an unfortunate mix-up involving the buttons marked off and snooze!"Ben leaned back in his own chair. "Fucking Neil Diamond," he said, and it was so understated, so unexpectedly perfect, that she laughed."You're pretty calm about this.""About taking Neil Diamond's name in vain? Don't let the suit fool you. I'm surprisingly controversial."Chloe shook her head, refusing to admit she was charmed. "Can't you just be pissed off about the flight being canceled? Like a normal person?"His shrug was philosophical. "We're not getting to Buffalo tonight. Not worth getting worked up about if it's out of your control.""That's very Zen of you," she said, though it wasn't a compliment."Fortune cookies," Ben sermonized, "are not only delicious, but full of extremely practical wisdom."At that moment, Stewardess Barbie appeared beside Aisle Guy and her massive breasts exerted a gravitational pull on the eyes of the entire row, Chloe's included. How did anything that top-heavy stay upright? The flight attendant glanced down at her clipboard and Chloe couldn't help but notice that her glittery pink eye shadow was creased and caking.Chloe fought the urge to tell her about the new eye shadow primer that Titanium Beauty had just come out with. It was oil-free and did an incredible job of keeping shadow in its place all day. And that glitter was best saved for evening events because mattes and neutral shimmers worked best in daylight or fluorescent light. Also that with her skin tone, peachier shades would be much more flattering than pinks…"Gordon Hinky?"Aisle Guy's gaze was stuck in the general vicinity of their messenger's more. pneumatic assets. Rolling her eyes at the predictability of testosterone, Chloe held her breath as he raised his arm.Barbie sped through the "sorry for the inconvenience" script in a bored monotone before flicking her gaze to more promising territory. "And that must make you Benjamin."Gak.At least Ben had enough class to meet her eyes when he confirmed the obvious. "It's just Ben.""Well, Just Ben, here's your Value Inn voucher."Ben reached past her to accept the glossy slip of paper and Chloe caught the clean, masculine scent of him."It's good for fifteen percent off. There's a map on the back detailing the closest locations to the airport. Someone will be at the gate to direct you to the taxi and shuttle stands, but if you need any help finding your way or, you know, with anything, just say the word. I'd be more than happy to help you."The breathy offer was very Marilyn Monroe."Jetopia apologizes for the delay, but we hope you'll give us the chance to make it up to you. We'd love to have you fly with us again." After a long moment, she tore her gaze away from Ben and focused on Chloe.

By kari I caught the first chapter of this book last year when it was entered in Harlequin's So You Think You Can Write contest and it blew me away with how much it sucked me in. It was no surprise that it got published. Not quite a year later and I had to get it and see the rest of the story.I was only going to read the first chapter at night then head to bed. NOPE! The book and great characters had other ideas. I couldn't put it down. Just one more chapter and then I'll go to bed. Yeah, pipe dream. Each chapter ended in such a way that I needed to read just ONE more. What had me turning the page over and over were not only the great, unique characters and their witty, sometimes outrageous banter, but the great storyline itself. I love the Pretend Marriage trope and this one did double duty. Yet intermingled with the snappy dialogue and fun, flirty action was deep emotion that reached inside reminding us that we've all had those disappointments and let-downs too.Taryn Leigh Taylor is a new author to watch. With writing like this, I feel she'll be a new favorite not only for me but for many a romance reader.

Matthews Kiss and Makeup begins with Chloe and Ben meeting on an airplane that is laid over in Chicago due to bad weather. They have the same last name - but no relation to each other - and are forced to share a hotel room when they're mistaken as husband and wife. And so the comedy of errors begins in this fun and flirty romance.Chloe abandoned a privileged life with her rich parents in order to grow into the person she wanted to be (free spirited make-up artist with colorful hair, body piercings and tattoos). Ben is chasing after a privileged lifestyle having grown up with little, and in doing so is denying the person he is meant to be. Somehow these two lost souls find each other and really shine together.I giggled a lot while reading this story, and I felt emotionally invested by the end when the climax came. But the smexy scenes - though plentiful - were a bit on the light side and short. However, a story that makes me laugh as much as this one did deserves the full four stars. There were a few parts of the story that felt a bit rushed to me, and the overall storyline is predictable. Sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered. It's a great beach read that will have you smiling from beginning to end.I appreciate the free copy in exchange for an honest review!

I love the way the hero and heroine are thrown together and have to work things out. This story doesn't involve a real marriage, but Chloe and Ben end up pretending they are married for his career.Chloe is anything but conventional. She is a modern heroine with a make-up blog on Youtube but she hasn't quite had the courage to go further with her career aspirations so she's working in a shop in a mall selling make-up.Ben is determined to reach high in his career, leaving behind his working class roots and becoming a high powered advertising executive. When they meet, both see clearly they are not a match, despite the sizzling sexual tension. But circumstances, and a little lust, combine to force them together.Taylor has a very modern voice with her young hero and heroine. It's a fun read with a fair amount of smexy but not as hot and heavy as some Blaze titles. It's just right for the story.Overall a nice little read with interesting characters.

This is in my top 5 favorite Paleo cookbooks that I have read to date By John Snowy This is in my top 5 favorite Paleo cookbooks that I have read to date. The text is engaging and the recipes are delectable. Eating a paleo diet has reversed my autoimmune disease. This book has a lot of recipes I can make ahead and grab without thinking about it - several variations on grainless oatmeal and granola, baked goods, omelets and frittatas that can be made in large batches and reheated, even some smoothies that I can prep ingredients in advance and toss in the blender in the morning. My favorite recipe so far is Mushrooms with Eggs for Breakfast, it's awesome! I can't wait to try them all.The day should really start with a healthy breakfast to strengthen me the entire day. I am excited to get through all the recipes given in this book.

The recipes are horrible - not well thought out as to ingredients or directions. The directions are done so sloppily that one has to guess how to combine ingredients and whether or not all ingredients have been listed. I haven't tried all recipes, but the five I did try were Inedible. Run away!

When nearly killing a classmate gets seventeen-year-old Sadie Su kicked out of her third boarding school in four years, she returns to her family's California vineyard estate. Here, she's meant to stay out of trouble. Here, she's meant to do a lot of things. But it's hard. She's bored. And when Sadie's bored, the only thing she likes is trouble.

Emerson Tate's a poor boy living in a rich town, with his widowed mother and strange, haunted little brother. All he wants his senior year is to play basketball and make something happen with the girl of his dreams. That's why Emerson's not happy Sadie's back. An old childhood friend, she knows his worst secrets. The things he longs to forget. The things she won't ever let him.

Haunted is a good word for fifteen-year-old Miles Tate. Miles can see the future, after all. And he knows his vision of tragic violence at his school will come true, because his visions always do. That's what he tells the new girl in town. The one who listens to him. The one who recognizes the darkness in his past.

But can Miles stop the violence? Or has the future already been written? Maybe tragedy is his destiny. Maybe it's all of theirs.

Delicate Monsters is Stephanie Kuehn at her finest.

Delicate Monsters: A Novel, by Stephanie Kuehn

From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up—This novel centers on the convergence of the lives of Sadie, a damaged girl who enjoys causing others pain, and Emerson, a boy who's trying desperately to hide the dysfunction inside his family and himself. The novel follows Sadie as she arrives back in California wine country after being expelled from a series of far-flung and expensive boarding schools. Emerson is stunned by her reappearance and unprepared to face the past they shared, which only makes Sadie more interested in pursuing and taunting him. When a life-or-death crisis occurs, both of them must finally face reality, along with their demons. The emotional baggage of the main characters is never fully explained or resolved, but this will not bother teens who enjoy a briskly paced, high-adrenaline narrative full of parties, sex, and fast cars. Overall, Delicate Monsters is an enjoyable read but has no gripping moments or stunning surprises to make it stand up against more compelling novels, such as The Impossible Knife of Memory by Laurie Halse Anderson (Viking, 2014) or It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini (Miramax, 2006). VERDICT For avid fans of the author and teens who enjoy honest and often dark tales.—Tara Hixon, Piedmont High School, OK

Review

“Kuehn (Complicit) once again proves herself a talented writer in a tough, punishing novel about the damages we inflict on others and the shaky defenses we build to mask trauma and guilt.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Kuehn effortlessly switches between Sadie, Emerson, and Miles, unspooling an intriguing entwined story that dips backward and forward, rife with teasing questions that gradually lay bare troubling secrets. Like her previous YA novels, Kuehn's latest benefits from tight construction, expert pacing, and voices that ring especially true for contemporary teenagers, particularly Sadie's entrancing, gleefully acerbic tone. Intelligent, compulsively readable literary fiction with a dark twist.” ―Booklist (Starred Review)

“A briskly paced, high-adrenaline narrative full of parties, sex, and fast cars...[for] teens who enjoy honest and often dark tales.” ―School Library Journal

“Kuehn's prose intensifies in feeling with each page. Her characters' mental anguish and vulnerability take center stage, no excuses allowed, pain and rawness totally exposed. Sexual language and activity reveal the highs and lows of these teens on the edge of despair. A chilling look into heartache and reckless redemption-not for the faint of heart.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Kuehn writes with the fleetness of a trained thriller author...Explosive.” ―Booklist (starred review) on Complicit

“Kuehn's second novel, after her Morris Award-winning Charm & Strange, powerfully examines how mental illness can turn into family tragedy that ripples far and wide beyond a single event. The prose is as hallucinatory as the madness Jamie seeks to uncover in a novel that's tense and ambiguous from start to finish.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Complicit

“A high-powered voice rich in charismatic style and emotional intensity illuminates this ambitious debut.” ―Kirkus Reviews on Charm & Strange

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Brutal and honest By Inspiring Insomnia I don’t usually pay much attention to titles, but “Delicate Monsters” intrigued me. What exactly is a “delicate monster?” After reading Stephanie Kuehn’s latest novel, I did some Googling and expected to find that the phrase is from a song or a poem or another book, and I wanted to see how it was originally used to get some additional insight into Kuehn’s ideas about her story. But it looks like it’s an original phrase that she created, so I will try to interpret it myself. I think the “delicate monsters” in this story are people who have some form of mental illness and who do horrible things. In hindsight, that seems evident, but the beauty of these “delicate monsters” is that Kuehn writes them in such a way that we are able to feel some varying degrees of sympathy for them. The first and most clear-cut monster is Sadie Su. I’ll go ahead and diagnose Sadie as a sociopath. She’s cruel for no other reason than that she can be, she throws rocks at cars for fun, and she’s just generally scary. One little scene that highlighted Sadie’s mental illness more clearly than even some of the more outwardly cruel behavior she exhibits is when urinates on herself while walking in her house in her nightgown. Why? Because she likes the feel of the warmth on her legs. This freaked me out for a couple of reasons. One, because it demonstrates how disconnected she is from “normal” human behavior, and two, because it reminded me of a certain scene from The Exorcist.Emerson is our next monster. He’s Sadie’s former childhood friend and current classmate. Initially, he seems OK. But then he commits a sick act which would be bad enough on its own, but is made worse because of the way he is unable to understand the wrongness of his actions. We also learn, through Sadie, about his sadistic acts as a child, and by that point, I began to view Emerson as even scarier than Sadie.Miles is Emerson’s younger brother. He might not be a monster, unless you consider his possible ability to predict impending, horrible violence as monstrous. He’s odd and awkward and, not surprisingly, he’s tormented and bullied at school. He’s tortured by the visions in his head and unfortunately, his brother is too self-absorbed to care.Sadie connects with these two brothers in very different ways. She decides to have her unique brand of “fun” with Emerson, and I can’t say that I minded. He deserved to be on the receiving end of Sadie’s torturing. But Miles has a very different effect on Sadie. Something about his strangeness helped to level off her sociopathic tendencies, if only in her interactions with Miles.I had certain expectations going into this book, based on Kuehn’s previous two novels, Charm and Strange and Complicit, both of which were very, very good. They both dealt with mental illness and had unreliable narrators and knock-your-socks-off endings. Delicate Monsters differs primarily in its lack of an unreliable narrator, and I kept waiting for someone to get exposed. But I like how Kuehn took a different and unexpected path here. There IS a shocking ending, and it’s one that at the beginning of the book would have seemed unbelievable, but with Kuehn’s careful development of her characters throughout the story, it works, and it’s very powerful. One of my favorite things about all of Kuehn’s books is how she is completely unafraid to show the ugliness of her characters. As a reader, this can be a brutal experience, but it’s real, and it’s honest, and it’s true to life.Note: This review is based on an ARC received from the publisher.

Brilliant look into the darker side of human nature By My So-Called Book Reviews Delicate Monsters was the first of Stephanie Kuehn’s books that I received in the form of an ARC from NetGalley but it turned out to be the last of her books that I read. When I decide to read a book by a new (to me) author I always go back and look at their other books too. When I read the synopsis of Complicit and Charm and Strange I just knew I had to read them! I ended up buying all three books in print, even though I already had a digital galley of this one. This is what happens when I have cover love, and I have some seriously deep cover love for Kuehn’s novels! As I’ve stated in my previous reviews, I love all her books, they’re fantastic. If I had to rank them in order I’d say that Complicit is my favorite, then Charm and Strange, and then Delicate Monsters. Don’t get me wrong though, there was nothing about this book that I didn’t love. I only rank it slightly lower than the others because I typically prefer psychological thrillers which are told through the POV of a single unreliable narrator, in Delicate Monsters we have three narrators and they aren’t necessarily unreliable.Sadie Su is a cruel seventeen year old who doesn’t seem to care about anyone nor have appropriate feelings for things in general. She’s just moved back to the California wine country where she grew up after being expelled from numerous boarding schools. She’s definitely one of the oddest characters I’ve ever read about and even though she’s mean and cruel, I kinda liked her and enjoyed reading the chapters from her POV. Emerson is an eighteen year old boy who comes from a very poor family yet they live in a very rich town. His goals in life seem simple; hang with his friends, get the girl he likes to be his girlfriend, and continue playing basketball. When he discovers that Sadie has moved back to town after all these years he realizes he now has a new life goal, avoid Sadie Su at all costs. You see, Emerson and Sadie used to hang out at her families vineyard when they were younger and Sadie knows all of Emerson’s secrets, secrets he’d never want getting out. I really liked Emerson at first and found it really interesting that he was able to integrate himself with all of these rich kids without hiding who he was or where he came from. Then there’s Miles, Emerson’s fifteen year old brother who seems to get sick all of the time yet nobody can explain why. Miles also believes he can see the future but his visions only show him impending doom and he’s stuck trying to figure out what it means and how to stop it. He’s relentlessly bullied and tormented at school, a constant loner. Miles was a bit of an enigma for me, I wasn’t sure if I truly “liked” him as a character but found his “visions” really fascinating and I loved trying to figure out if they were real or all in his head. There’s really no way to describe the plot of Delicate Monsters because to do so would involve spoilers and there’s no fun it that! What I can say is that this is a story about secrets, dark and dirty secrets that some of our characters don’t want anyone finding out, ever. I loved the amount of mysteries that were woven within this story, there were so many secrets to try and figure out and uncover and it really kept me turning the pages. What did Sadie do to get herself expelled from so many boarding schools? Why exactly is Emerson so hell bent on avoiding Sadie? What did he do when they were younger that was so bad he doesn’t want anyone finding out? And why has Sadie kept this secret to herself all these years? Why does Miles get so sick when no doctor can find anything wrong with him? Can he really see the future or is he actually mentally unstable? If his vision of an imminent tragic event is true, can he stop it from happening? This book will have your head spinning trying to figure it all out!If you know anything about Stephanie Kuehn’s novels then you know you’re in for a total mindf*** when you read them. In my opinion she’s the best, like seriously, she’s the queen of mindf***ing your brain. I knew this going in. I’ve read her other books and was totally prepared. I thought to myself, this time I will see it coming. I’ll read between the lines & figure out the secrets of this novel before Kuehn wants me to. Ummm ya, so that’s not how it went at all! I really thought I was figuring it out too, I started seeing how all the pieces could come together to reveal this grand design and I thought “oooh this is gonna be good”. But what do I know? Clearly nothing because while I was busy “figuring out” what I thought was going on Kuehn was busy laying out her perfect web to trap me. When I finally realized what was going on my brain was like “what just happened?? no seriously…….. what the f*** just happened?!?!?!” I have no clue how she does it, NO FREAKIN CLUE PEOPLE! But she does it, every single time and that’s why she’s the queen :)I highly recommend Delicate Monsters (or any of Kuehn’s three books) for readers who love to get swept away into the darker side of human nature. If you fancy stories that are extremely dark and disturbing yet pull you in and fascinate you at the same time, then this is the book for you. If you love writing that mesmerizes and captivates you while also making you feel somewhat uncomfortable, then this is the book for you. If you enjoy deep, twisted character studies and endings that are left slightly open, then this is definitely the book for you. If you don’t love, like or even enjoy most of the things I’ve just mentioned then run, don’t walk, cause this isn’t the book for you A huge thank you to the publishers, St. Martin’s Griffin and to NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary, advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

Delicate Monsters was chocolate… only bitter chocolate. The story sounded entertaining like ice cream with chocolate chip cookie dough (cookie douuuughhhhh) yet what I read was mostly plain ol’ vanilla. Can you tell I am hungry??? Delicate Monsters was a book I was extremely excited for, and I am not saying this book was bad… just that the main characters were horrible people.**I hate calling people horrible :'( but there is nothing else I can say! They. Were. Awful. I’ll explain later. What I LikedAw man, why haven’t I read any of Stephanie Kuehn’s books yet? Awww maaaaan is she a WONDERFUL writer! I can’t even get over how hard it was too put down Delicate Monsters (even if it did gross me out at times…) Her words. Her story. Her writing! HER EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK! *Breathes deeply* the way this book is written, is amazing. The detail is fantastic (and blech, gross) but oh so wonderfully written. Delicate Monsters is probably one of the most well written books I have ever read @_@ but uh, I tend to love how books are written sooo XDGoodness… I give this book the award of The Most Explosive Ending I Have Ever Read In My Life Thus Far (as of 2015)! I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING! I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING! I DID NOT SEE THAT COMMMMMMMMMMMMIIIIIIIING! Oh gosh O_O somebody help me, I can’t get over it! THAT WAS SHOCKING! Maybe I shouldn’t be so shocked but whatever XD it did blow me away and freak me out and oh gosh, I can’t even O_OWhat I Didn't LikeOh gooooooolllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy~ My biggest beef (more foooood, yuuumahhhh) with Delicate Monsters are the main characters. The only one I actually liked was Miles, poor Miles. He was an odd character yet none of it was his fault! His stupid brother (oh gosh did I HATE him) Emerson was ridiculous. I think if I had to choose a character I absolutely hated, it would be Emerson. Emerson Tate is the most horrible main character I have ever read in my existence. Oh gosh, I never really dislike characters like I disliked him… yet I sort of feel like that was the point with Emerson, but whatever. HE WAS AWFUL! Oh, and Sadie Su was awful. They were both horrible but at least Sadie was a bit less bad Not a fan of Emerson or Sadie people… I just did not expect them to be THAT bad! This book was a bit more adult than I expected O___O! Some of these scenes *shivers* I wish I could forget them… Stephanie Kuehn is a fantastic writer but did she need to go into all the detail? Jeez :O! I did not want to know that, or that, OR THAT! TOO MUCH INFOOOO *screams*VerdictDelicate Monsters is written by the wonderful Stephanie Kuehn and though disgusted me a bit, is a story I would recommend to people who don’t mind more mature content…

Liz Jacoby is a petite, single, 48 year old woman, who was a photographer and longtime resident of Columbus, OH. It is July. She is in the hospital’s rehab center to overcome a hemorrhagic stroke. She has to use a wheelchair, but her recovery has been rather routine, as well as tedious. Nothing an active, talented photographer would want any time. Pete Young, a short, wiry, 45 year old man is the patient across the hall with an “accidental” gunshot wound and a mild concussion. In reality, he had been hired to kill a political city candidate and was shot by that target. This was his first messed up hit. A known thief, not a known hit man. Liz overhears the argument Pete and Luke, his boss, had about why he was shot. Liz is convinced Pete is a hitman. Pete is certain that she heard their argument, so he begins to weave his web-of-doubt to play-up her stroke’s mental deficiency to the hospital’s staff. The last thing on Liz’s mind is to deal with a hit man in the hospital. Her biggest question was who could she tell about Pete; who would believe her? However, along with her medical concerns, her current life gives her a new boyfriend, Scott Warner, a Physical Therapy Intern. He began late to begin his Physical Therapy career; a little younger than Liz, but not that much. She confides in Scott and knows he believes her because he tells his police detective friend of her dilemma with Pete. Liz is disabled, but she becomes a tenacious, gritty patient to deal with Pete’s mental torments. No matter, Liz is a survivor! With emotional twists, a murder and a bit of romance, The Spider Sat Beside Her is riveting!

She is a stroke survivor like B.D. Adams, the author. She is gutsy, but disabled and refuses to let her disabilities keep her down. A little like "Rear Window," the movie by Hitchcock, or the movie with Robert De Niro in "Flawless." I highly recommend this book for everyone who likes suspense, but maybe more for other stroke survivors and there family members to see what can be accomplished. B. D. obviously wanted to show other survivors that they can do more. What Liz, the heroine, does in chapter 32 was more than a surprise!
