The setting and the circumstances should put a new twist on the way you view the world. Three barely teen adventurers and their Tik Tok jack of all trades, Mr. Rivets are all that oppose the Mangleborn monsters striving to take over the world.The author does a good job providing age appropriate personalities to his characters. Fergus can get so wrapped up in his appreciation of his sciences that he totally misses the danger he might face. I think all of us who have worked with children and particularly very bright children have known a Fergus. Archie exhibits the insecurities that epitomize the teen years. He is a very flawed hero which, of course, makes him more believable in a very unbelievable story.Equally the single minded Hachi is easy to understand due to the trauma she has faced. I was a bit surprised by the amount of death dealing in an novel for this young of an age group. It is appropriate to the plot but gives the story a bit more edge that may stretch the comfort factor of some parents.Mr. Rivets' interest in a self winding device provided a delightful tongue in cheek moment. Gratz did a nice job in creating his Steampunk world.I liked the book and recommend it.

Oddly Disengaging By Talvi The League of Seven is an imaginative mid school read featuring a wild steampunk world full of menacing monsters and soaring steamships. But oddly passive main characters rarely rise to meet the challenge of the worldbuilding and the horror is fairly disturbing.In an alternate universe 1875 America, Archie Dent is the son of heroic parents: members of the Septemberist Society who have historically protected the Earth from the monstrous creatures known as Mangleborn. Although they have been suppressed for centuries, the mangleborn have found a new conduit back into the human world: electricity. The time has come for a New League of Seven: the heroes with unique abilities to appear when the world needs them most. Archie Dent always dreamed of being the leader of the League of Seven: fate may have arranged that he will assume that role and find the remaining six.About half way through this novel, I realized I just wasn't enjoying the story. Despite the very creative reimagining of the 1875 world, I didn't get into Archie or the other characters. Gratz is a good enough author that he would take a very passive child and transform him through adversity into a hero. But that transformation was taking far too long and I had a hard time rooting for or understanding the character. Odd plot choices abounded - each one making Archie more of a unappealing, timid, crybaby than heroic. He falls asleep in great danger, doesn't run or fight but goes along with the flow, cries and shuts down with adversity, and seems more like a seven year old than pre-tween. Perhaps that was more realistic when a child is confronted with horror situations - but then again, I don't want realism in a fantastical steampunk world. And in other situations, the reactions were so odd and unrealistic that the lack of consistency kept throwing me out of the novel.So for me, I was fascinated when the world was described; disengaged when the story turned to Archie Dent. The horror aspects were disturbing and a bit much for me as well. This is a book that I can see many enjoying; I just didn't like the characters, felt there were some odd plot choices, and felt there was perhaps too much going on overshadowing the characters.Reviewed from an ARC.

By Holly from FierceandFabulousBookDiva I'm a reading addict, so I go through phases where it feels like all of the books I'm reading sound similar. It's rare that I can find a book that seems unique. I got that with Outback Hearts. Reality TV is all around us, but this is the first book I have read with a reality TV plotline. It was very interesting. You get both POVs in the story, so you know what's going on from both of their perspectives. It felt like a behind-the-scenes look at a reality show. I wondered while reading this if Susan Stoker had ever been a reality show before.In a sea of models, Sam was the diamond in the rough. Alex was a gentleman and I loved him. He was so protective of women and in general. He was down-to-earth, but he also had the whole I am my own boss thing going on. I would like to see more Alex's on reality TV (or in reality or on TV). It wasn't a short story, but it was a quick read that kept me super engrossed. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. I loved this book and can't wait for more in the series, which I assume by the series name will be reality show based.Alex and Sam are individually bullied by their friends into applying for a spot in a new reality TV show, even know neither of them know what the premise of the show will be. When they both get selected for the show with a location of the Australian Outback, they both agree to attend to get the free vacation if nothing else. Once in Australia, the producers tell Sam she needs to go by "Sammie" on the show. They have a Meet & Greet to announce that it's a dating show (similar to The Bachelor) and there are 16 female contestants (including Sam) trying to win the bachelor's heart. It doesn't take Sam long to realize that she is the only contestant that doesn't look or act like a model.When Alex learned that this was a dating reality show, he almost quit. He's a good-looking successful guy and he doesn't need to go on a dating showing to meet women. The more he thought about it, though, he realized that he is a 38-year old man who has never been married. Maybe he should give this a shot? He gave the producers his own set of requirements to be on the show and one of those is access to the behind the scenes tapes of the women. He doesn't want to be blindsided with a woman who isn't really interested in him or hateful to everyone else.It doesn't take Alex long to realize that there is only one contestant that doesn't fit the mold and it makes her interesting. He becomes more interested the more he knows about her. This reality show isn't like other dating reality shows. The bachelor doesn't always get a choice. Sometimes randomly chosen contestants have to leave and other times they have to win challenges. Can Sam make it through to the end and "win"? If she does, will Alex pick her? I always say you know its a really good book when you say your going to read two or three chapters and at 3am you finish the book, well in fact it was 2.20am but you get my point and it was so worth it lol.Sam and her friends decided to apply for a reality TV Show, thinking no more of it she suddenly gets invited to the auditions. Then in a very short time she finds herself in Australia with several other woman all fighting for the love of one man Alex. Alex never set out to be on a reality TV Show but thought it couldn’t be that hard, how wrong he was.Sam is a strong character from the start; she’s beautiful, confident and funny. However the short time in the outback really eats away at her self esteem, surrounded by tall thin model beautiful women all fighting for the same thing and willing to go to all lengths to get it, they weren’t short of being bitchy, conniving and eating away at you in the hope you would crack.Alex was Sexy, confident and wasn’t really looking for love but his friends had convinced him it would be fun. Neither Sam nor Alex knew at what lengths the TV Producer was willing to go to in order to make the TV Show a hit.Sam never expected to be attracted to the Batchelor of the Reality Show but no matter how much she tried to fight it she was. Alex couldn’t work out what it was about Sam but there was something about her he couldn’t deny.

By Shirley Bastian Susan's debut novel takes the reader behind the scenes of a reality dating show and allows you to live the experience from the point of view of one of the contestants (Sam/Sammie).It wasn't always easy to read Sam's story because I could actually feel her emotions as she experienced the true reality of reality shows ~ and,yes, this is a good thing. I want to feel right along with the characters and Susan has definitely managed to do that for me. I felt I was there with Sam, having the same emotional highs and lows she was having.Of course, I can't forget about the bachelor (Alex/Al) and the difficulty he experienced as the guy "dating" so many women at one time ~ despite all his frustrations, he survived the experience and both he and Sam came out of of it being the ultimate winners.A great read for those looking for a sweet, heartwarming read.Looking forward to what Susan has in store for readers next.

The idiosyncrasies of each individual character are so well defined and expressed in such ways that come across the page almost lyrically. I was invited into the pages and could not only imagine the atmosphere, but all of my senses were collectively enticed from the very first page until the last.I was so amazed with the way that the author was able to heighten all my senses. In most well-written books you get of a sense of what the characters look like and follow them throughout the book almost as if you are on a voyage, but with this novel, I could imagine what it was like to be in Emma or David's shoes. The descriptives were so beautifully intricate that I could imagine the atmosphere through touch and sound. It was amazing, really. Do yourself a favor and pick up Joe Alldredge's new book "Our Kiss". You'll be glad you did.

If you're a fan of the arts, you'll love this book and the references to classic artists and museums. Being from Atlanta, I especially love the familiar setting. I liked that I could get most of the ingredients easily. It helped me to prepare some of the items ahead of time so I could make a quick breakfast. This book provides almost a a full year worth of green smoothies.

The start of the book talks about the meany health and life benefits of having green smoothies before presenting the smoothies in the following categories: workout smoothies, high fiber smoothies, refreshing smoothies, quick breakfast smoothies, cleansing/detox smoothies, and pure green smoothies. I like most that there is a huge variety to fit each person's particular situation, e.g. if you're looking for one that's best after a good workout, you can go to the section for workout smoothies.
