In this eBook exclusive short story from Colby Marshall, the brash, clever Dr. Jenna Ramey once again uses her synesthesia—a neurological condition that causes perceptions of color to flash through her mind, triggered by seemingly unrelated stimuli—to help save lives. Only this time, she doesn’t yet hold the title of doctor, hasn’t yet worked as a profiler for the FBI, and the lives she’s rushing to save are her families’ and her own. As a teenager, Jenna Ramey knows there’s something unusual about her brain. A perceptual quirk punctuates her experiences with flashes of color. Letters, days of the week, people, emotions all have colors assigned them in her mind, seemingly at random. She’s known she had the associations since she can remember. It’s only recently that she’s realized she can use these flashes of color and interpret them to understand situations and people in ways others cannot. Recently, Jenna has realized that her mother is up to something... evil. She's resolved to master using her unique ability to prove what her mother is doing in order to stop the plot before the black widow kills them all. Don’t miss this glimpse into Dr. Jenna Ramey’s highly-charged past that will intrigue new readers and will delight series fans itching to know more about the fateful events that changed Jenna's life forever. I read the Jenna Ramey novels, and thoroughly enjoyed them, and fully expected to enjoy this short story, too. But it was just... okay. If I hadn't already read the novels, I'm not sure I would have understood exactly what was going on in this story, especially the synesthesia, and because I read the novels, my expectations for this story were high. I was hoping this story would cover the action-packed climactic event which resulted in Claudia going to jail, rather than the slow somewhat suspenseful build-up and non-ending ending it actually provided. I understand this is a short story, but I felt kinda short-changed.Not a bad read, but not this author's best, either. Three and a half stars.

Where the Stars Still Shine, by Trish Doller

From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up–Readers who appreciated the gritty realism tempered with romance in Doller's Something Like Normal (Bloomsbury, 2012) will welcome this book about a 17-year-old struggling to move beyond a traumatic past and find redemption. Callie was kidnapped at age five by her mother, Veronica, and both have been on the run ever since. Rootless and bouncing from place to place, the teen has become accustomed to loneliness. But when Veronica is finally arrested for her daughter's kidnapping, Callie's reunion with her father, Greg, is bittersweet. Left to her own devices all those years, she bristles at his attempts to establish a stable home environment and draw her into his close-knit family. He is part of a large Greek-American community in which everyone seems to know everyone and she is overwhelmed by it. Callie's competing loyalties to both parents prove trying as she grapples with creating friendships and fulfilling family expectations. Terrifying flashbacks also reveal that Callie was sexually abused as a child. She seeks solace in the arms of Alex, a local boy with a “ladies' man” reputation. Soon, their relationship develops from something steamy into enduring tenderness. Adding depth is the novel's stark contrast between Callie's itinerant, heartbreaking former life and her new one, suffused with warmth and Greek traditions. Doller gracefully handles complex issues including mental illness, parental neglect, and trauma in a respectful manner that will ring true to readers. A highly suitable choice for teens who enjoyed Erica Lorraine Scheidt's Uses for Boys (St. Martin's, 2013).–Lalitha Nataraj, Escondido Public Library, CAα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist Callie has spent the past 10 years living like a fugitive, ever since her mother abducted her from her father when they divorced. During those years, their life was transient and came with a terrible price for Callie, who was molested by one of her mother’s lovers. But now her mother is awaiting trial for kidnapping and medical help for the personality disorder that caused her to bolt in the first place. Callie is reunited with her father and his large Greek family, and while they all want to welcome her back and help her adjust to normal life, Callie has no idea what constitutes normal—or if she even deserves it. A passionate (and explicit) affair helps Callie realize that she is worthy of love and capable of setting down roots. Callie is a remarkably well-adjusted young woman, considering all she has experienced. Her divided loyalty between her damaged mother and the promise of a new life with her father is realistically portrayed, beautifully written, and never feels contrived. Grades 9-12. --Kara Dean

Interesting Story of a Girl Grown Up Too Fast By Maggie Knapp As befits a teen "problem novel," Callie's mother has drinking problems, money problems and relationship problems. Callie has pretty much raised herself, she doesn't attend school anymore. Truth be told, her mom is probably mentally ill. By Chapter 2, Callie and her mom are picked up the by a sheriff who discovers that Callie's mom doesn't really have custody, and her father has been looking for her for years. Her father has remarried, Callie has two half-brothers, and this new family lives in a close knit Greek community a plane-ride away.Author Trish Doller does an excellent job of portraying Callie's wariness with her new and (an outside observer might say) "better" family. But despite the abundant love, the financial security and the clean clothes, Callie misses her mom and feels uncomfortable in this new family-intensive life. She is used to fending for herself and being on her own. Nothing unfolds as expected, as the rich and sometimes flawed characters do the best they can to adjust to new circumstances. Callie is sexually active, and her relationships are portrayed lovingly and realistically for a young woman grown up too soon. Probably best for high school readers, due to some mature situations.About me: I'm a middle school/high school librarianHow I got this book: advance reading copy given to me at a conference

Power Where the Stars Still Shine by Trish Doller follows Callie who has been on the run with her mother since she was small. When her mother gets pulled over Callie gets sent home to live with a Father she only barely remembers. Callie has to come to grip with her past and her new present. This is a fantastic book, difficult and full of heart. Callie has lived a tough life and integrating into a new community and coming to grips with her past. The author does a good job at making the reader really understand why Callie makes the choices that she makes even if they're not the right choices. I sped through the book unable to put it down.Appropriateness: There is a lot of sex in this book, a lot. None of it is erotic or over descriptive but Callie's sexual behavior and her past sexual abuse is integral to her character and her story. There is underage drinking but no drug abuse. I would recommend this book to readers 16+ and encourage parents to use it to discuss sexuality and why people may act out sexually.

By Alexa @ Alexa Loves Books Where the Stars Still Shine is one of the most incredible books of this year. Callie's story is heartbreaking, but also hopeful; I was completely invested in it from start to finish. What makes this novel moving is how Doller skillfully tackles things that many of us might face in real life: shifting family dynamics, new friendships, and the promise of romance. Underneath all this, of course, is the heart of the book: Callie's journey towards making peace with her past, her present and her possible future.Callie is someone I could have been friends with, mostly because we both love books. After living a non-traditional life for so many years, it's no surprise that she's capable, street smart and fiercely independent. Even so, readers will feel the need to hold her hand and protect her as she gets exposed to a different lifestyle - one where she has a stable home, job and set of people surrounding her. Callie's understandably confused and awkward, attempting to fit herself into a life that could have been hers if her mom hadn't taken her away. Yet somehow, the pieces start to slowly fall into place. What makes her adjustment incredibly difficult is learning how to deal with her father, her new friend (and cousin) Kat, and a potential romance with Alex Kosta. These three are complete strangers in her life, and it's no surprise that she has no idea how to handle her relationships with each of them. How is she supposed to feel about this parent who is virtually a stranger and the family he brings into her life? Should she pursue this friendship with Kat, who is wonderfully bubbly and eager to be her friend? And what about the mysterious Alex, who's irresistible but also seems like a bad idea? Callie really goes through a lot as she learns what it means to have a dad, be a good friend and even truly fall in love with someone. She also develops a new dynamic with her mother, which is something that I thought was handled well. Even though it can be quite painful at times, Doller did a good job of bringing those various situations to life in an authentic way. There are quite a few moments in Where the Stars Still Shine that I'd want to return to time and again, because they're written so wonderfully. The whole novel really transports the reader into Callie's life, allowing us to feel like we're experiencing everything alongside her. While I can't guarantee you won't be frustrated with certain parts or characters, I can say, wholeheartedly, that it's fairly simple to fall in love with Doller's writing, Callie's story and even Alex Kosta. This novel is such a beautiful contemporary read, and definitely one of my favorites for 2013.

A fun, romantic read, perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen and Susane Colasanti! What happens when Matt and Ella reunite one year after their breakup? Are second chances really possible?

Before Matt, Ella had a plan. Get over her ex-boyfriend and graduate high school—simple as that. But Matt—the cute, shy, bespectacled bass player—was never part of that plan. And neither was attending a party that was crashed by the cops just minutes after they arrived. Or spending an entire night saying "yes" to every crazy, fun thing they could think of.

But then Matt leaves town, breaking Ella's heart. And when he shows up a year later—wanting to relive the night that brought them together—Ella isn't sure whether Matt's worth a second chance. Or if re-creating the past can help them create a different future.

The Night We Said Yes, by Lauren Gibaldi

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—When high school senior Ella goes to a party with her best friend, Meg, she has two things on her mind: to see a friend's band play and to forget all about her ex-boyfriend. However, when she meets the new bass player, a slightly geeky but cute boy named Matt, all of that goes out the window. Ella, along with Matt, Meg, and Meg's ex-boyfriend, Jake, decide to have a carefree night where they say yes to almost any suggestion of fun. Matt and Ella's attraction is instantaneous, so when he suddenly moves away six months later, she's devastated. One year later, Matt reappears hoping for a reconciliation by re-creating that magical night. But Ella isn't sure if she should forgive him or move on. Gibaldi effectively captures intense, all-consuming teen attraction—both the good and the groan-inducing. Even though the story is from Ella's perspective, Matt still comes across as almost too good to be true, while her friends Meg and Jake aren't fleshed out. Chapters alternate between Ella and Matt's first interaction one year in the past and Matt's return in present day. Because the events of both nights are so similar, some readers may find the story a bit hard to follow until the last few chapters. While this isn't the deepest of love stories, some teens will still get caught up. VERDICT Purchase for collections that have a strong fan base for realistic, romantic fiction.—Kimberly Castle-Alberts, Hudson Library & Historical Society, OH

From the Back Cover

Before Matt, Ella had a plan.

Get over a no-good ex-boyfriend. Graduate from high school without any more distractions. Move away from Orlando, Florida, where she's lived her entire life.

But Matt—the cute, shy, bespectacled bass player who just moved to town—was never part of that plan.

And neither was attending a party that was crashed by the cops just minutes after they arrived. Or spending an entire night saying "yes" to every crazy, fun thing they could think of.

Then Matt abruptly left town, and he broke not only Ella's heart but those of their best friends, too. So when he shows up a year later with a plan of his own—to relive the night that brought them together—Ella isn't sure whether Matt's worth a second chance. Or if re-creating the past can help them create a different future.

In alternating then and now chapters, debut author Lauren Gibaldi crafts a charming, romantic story of first loves, lifelong friendships, uncovered secrets, and, ultimately, finding out how to be brave.

I love YA, and I love relationship-based stories, and I really do love the ones that take you on a quest-type adventure. So I really did think this one would be a big hit for me. Unfortunately, I just wasn't left with what I expected. The story is told in alternating chapters between what happened back "then" and what's happening "now. Back then, Ella's friend Mae was with Jake, and Ella herself met Matt. They all formed a friendship and were paired off as couples. They had one amazing night where they all said yes to everything. Ella and Matt had a relationship until one day he just disappeared on her with no explanation to her or their friends. Now he's back. There was a lot of potential here for some good relationship drama, considering that in the "now", Matt has returned, and Mae and Jake have been on and off again and there's a question as to whether everyone will get back together, learn, grow, and build better relationships. And I love Then and Now stories. But then...everything just started not to work for me.The alternating chapters with their different storylines blended together and became repetitive. I didn't feel like we were actually going anywhere in the story. It seemed somewhat plotless, and I didn't feel like I really knew or at least connected with the characters. It was like, "here are Ella, Matt, Jake, and Mae... they did this back then, and now they're doing this now, and don't you love them?" I was waiting for some deeper characterization and never received it really.I thought the author handled the altering chapters well, with good transitions that didn't confuse, but the story itself just didn't progress for me beyond repeating the past. I found myself growing bored very quickly. I struggled through it but in the end, this story just wasn't for me. I hope others are able to enjoy it more.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Two and a half stars: A book that misses the mark with it's weak story line. By Heidi Ella is looking forward to when she can finally leave her hometown and head out to college. For right now, she is focused on tonight's party. This past year was hard as Ella spent months and months trying to forget the boy who broke her heart when he left with no explanation and no contact. At least she has her best friend, Meg. At the party, Meg is busy flirting with another guy, trying to forget her own messy relationship. The guy Meg is hanging all over wants to introduce them to his new roommate. When Ella hears the name Matt, her heart stops. It can't be her Matt after all this time, but when she raises her head, standing in front of her is the very same Matt who stole her heart a year ago. Will Ella listen to his explanation and give him a second chance? What I liked:*I know I am a dissenting opinion on this one as many readers have read and loved this one. Yes, this book is sweet and fluffy and it has an adorable, nerdy male lead who will make you smile, but it was missing a bit of something for me. It is a pleasant read, but I felt it lacked depth and detail. However, if you are wanting something cute and simple as well as romantic pick this one up.*I liked that this book has alternating chapters told in the now and the before. It flashes back and forth in time. The before chapters relate the events of one magical night when Ella and her two friends along with Matt agree to hang out and say yes to everything. What follows is a crazy adventure with lots of sparks as Matt and Ella fall in love. The Now chapters follow Matt and Ella as they are reunited after their break up a few months ago. I enjoyed the format, and I liked trying to piece together the before and the now.*Matt is one of the bright spots in the book. There is just something about a shy, nerdy guy who has a habit of picking up scraps of paper. Matt is adorable and endearing, and he is hard to resist.*The romance is nice, even though I thought it felt like insta love. Still it was easy to see how two people meeting on a magical summer night could quickly fall in love. In the now chapters there is a the possibility of a second chance romance, the question is will Ella be brave enough to snatch up the opportunity or is she too damaged by the past?*The book ends a bit open ended, but it ends on a high note with plenty of optimism for the future. I closed the book satisfied with the way things played out.And The Not So Much:*What really held this book for me was that I never got a run down on what happened when Ella and Matt split. Did he just leave town without saying goodbye or did he leave with the promise of staying in touch or did he even say anything before disappearing? Whatever the case, he left and he didn't contact Ella anymore. I needed to know the details regarding how he left, as I felt like this was a big and important part of the story. For me, I wanted more in the past than the one night when Ella and Matt fell in love.*Furthermore, once Matt reveals the reasons for leaving, I didn't buy it. Basically it revolved around some family issues. I thought the explanation was weak. There was no reason why he couldn't have called or emailed. This was a big fail in my opinion. I didn't like that he wasn't honest with Ella. If he really cared for her, he should have told her the truth when he left. She would have understood.*There are two romances in this book. The other centers around Ella's friends, Meg and Jake. Their romance is an absolute train wreck. It is a relationship full of constant bickering, break ups and make ups all because Jake can't stop flirting with other girls. Meg and Jake fight all the time, and Jake shows little respect for Meg. I had no patience for the two of them and their ridiculous relationship. Meg should have kicked him to the curb long ago and gotten herself some self respect.*I think the reason this book didn't work for me was I just didn't feel the emotion or connect with the romances. I think it all stems from the fact that I didn't believe the reasons for Matt leaving, and I couldn't stand the constant animosity between Jake and Meg.*A word of caution this book is best suited for older readers as there is underage drinking and smoking and adult language. The Night We Said Yes is another YA contemporary that fails to stand out in the sea of YA romances. Even though this is presented as a sweet, light and fluffy story, I thought it lacked emotion and depth. Still if you aren't a picky reader and you want a cute romance, give this a try. I would recommend borrowing it or checking it out from the library.I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated for this review.Posted@Rainy Day Ramblings.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. it held the kind of whimsical adrenaline that comes from a perfect summer night By Breanna & Lacey When I saw The Night We Said Yes, I immediately knew that I wanted to read it. The cover punched me square in the chest with nostalgia and I wanted to rip open the edges and squeeze myself in with them. Sadly, I couldn’t do that… but hey, at least I could still read the book. I was pleasantly surprised to find that reading Ella’s story was the very same as sinking myself into her world.I don’t know how to write a review that does this book justice. I read it in December of 2014, but I still remember it by heart. I get a weird fuzzy feeling in the pit of my stomach when I think about it. The setting of this book was seamless and even though it was absolutely contemporary, it held the kind of whimsical adrenaline that comes from a perfect summer night. The invincibility, the love, the amazement, everything that comes from experiencing a night like this one crashed out of this book in waves, and left me feeling elated, like I was 17 years old again. To me, that’s what contemporary books are all about. Our main heroine, Ella, is one of the most likable girls I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. She was funny, and she was sweet. She was observant and more than anything, she was interesting. Her voice was sharp and impossible to ignore. Matt, who’s so much more than just Ella’s love interest, made my heart ache and my tummy flip. He was adorable and ideal without being too much.My favorite part of this book was the supporting characters. Yes, supporting. Not background. Meg and Jake, Ella’s best friend and her on-and-off boyfriend, were pertinent arts of Ella’s story. She and Meg’s friendship was beautiful. It’s the kind of friendship every girl dreams of having: honest, invincible, loyal, and above all else, most important. Meg was invariably the most important person in Ella’s life, no matter how much she loved Matt, and that’s… I don’t even have words for it. Meg and Ella’s friendship was the best part of this book, hands down. Jake comes across as a little bit of a jackass sometimes, but he and Meg’s relationship was realistic to me. There are couples like that: the ones that argue all the time, never seem to agree, love to push each other’s buttons, but ultimately, they just can’t be apart. I would pay a shameful amount of money for a sequel focusing on Meg and Jake, honestly.Overall, there was a hidden depth to all of these characters that unfolds naturally throughout the story, and you don’t even realize it’s happening until you find yourself crying and not wanting to go to sleep because you have to know what happens next. The story is adorable but it’s more than that, too. It’s beautiful and complex but subtle, realistic. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s a must read, honestly. You don’t want to miss out on this.Anyone who loved Fueled by Ramen, All Time Low, and all of those early 2000s glory days will swoon to death over this book, I think. I would especially recommend it to people who liked This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Kissing Ted Callahan (and Other Guys) by Amy Spalding, and The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp.

Now that I found this book and spotted how some of these foods are made (biko, cassava cake) I was surprised how simple they are to prepare! Those desserts came out great when I followed the steps exactly. Even tried some other dishes and loved them too. Filipino cuisine tastes great!

Each uniquely distinct and interesting. Some on the players lives I found it kind of pointless and boring however the majority of the players have a very interesting story to tell and what they have gone through. I really like some chapters over others but overall it's a good book to read.

How Tom Pickering survived a plane crash and nearly five years in WW2 German POW camps. To survive a 'plane crash was one miracle. To survive four hours in the freezing North Sea and remain conscious was another. To be spotted and rescued by a German ship was another. Clearly, someone up there didn't want Tom to die.

From the remarkable ‘Prologue’ onwards I was gripped by this book, devouring it in one session.I’ve read many books about WW2 life - in the RAF or as a Prisoner Of War. This great book has both these topics and much more besides. It has an overall quality to match the very highest of the genre. Here I’m thinking of Guy Gibson’s ‘Enemy Coast Ahead’ or Paul Brickhill’s ‘Reach For The Sky’.The author was clearly a courageous man – but tells his story with modesty and a generous helping of Service humour. ‘Rescued By The Enemy: My Battle For Survival’ is more than just a punchy title, it is a real part of Tom’s remarkable memories.Highly Recommended.

An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible

Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns into an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

Nowhere but Here (Thunder Road), by Katie McGarry

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Emily's world is just the way she thinks she wants it to be…calm, normal, and filled with the love of her mother and stepfather. She denies an interest in Eli's world, her biological father, who is an important member of the Reign of Terror motorcycle gang. While she does seem to have some questions about Eli, Emily doesn't want to explore her dad's world in any depth. When her parents tell her she will be attending Eli's mother's wake, she is not thrilled, but agrees to go. There, she is thrown into a world of feuding motorcycle gangs, family secrets, and complicated feelings for a young man named Oz. One quick visit turns into an extended trip as the teen tries to unravel the mysteries of her parents' pasts, learning her place in two communities, and investigating her growing feelings for Oz. Emily starts to discover there may be more to life than her protected version. McGarry adeptly splits the narrative between the two protagonists and creates a story that readers will not want to put down. VERDICT This novel will be enjoyed by teens looking for a romantic and thrilling escape.—Jessica Strefling, Pepperdine School of Law Library, CA

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. really great book for young adult fans, new adult fans and adult fans alike. By Michelle@Book Briefs 4.5/5Nowhere But Here is the first book in a new young adult contemporary series by Katie McGarry, called Thunder Road. 2015 is the year where I finally start to read some new- but-insanely-popular-YA-authors. Because guess what? I haven't read a Katie McGarry book yet. Craziness! I know. But when I saw that she had a new series coming out, I thought this was the perfect time for me to jump on the bandwagon and experience what all the ya romance hype is about. And I get it, people. I really do. I have never been one for motorcycle books. I know it is a huge trope out there, but I could never really get into it. Until now. I absolutely loved the family and brother ship that Katie McGarry painted with the Reign of Terror. Trust me, their name is way meaner than they actually are.Nowhere But Here is told in dual narrative between Emily and Oz. Oz is the son of one of the big ups in the Reign of Terror and he has been itching to join the business, well, since forever. Emily is the long lost daughter of the head family of the chapter. And her past is shrouded in deep dark mysteries. I really liked the mysterious aspect that surrounded Emily and her mom. It was a fun element that I wasn't expecting in the story. I was fed up right along with Emily as she tried to sort out all of the lies and secrets that everyone was keeping from her.But the main focus on the story is Emily and Oz. Oz is assigned to protect Emily from the ongoing riots between a forced rival of a motorcycle gang. And this other gang, seems like the bad kind. I liked that Katie McGarry distinguished between legit motorcycle groups that do things "legal" and aboveboard, and the other gangs that don't care so much about following the law. The romance between Oz and Emily was a wonderful slow burn romance. They certainly did not like each other at first glance, but rather what they felt built and evolved over time.Katie McGarry has created a fantastic group of characters with a wonderful romance between Oz and Emily. This book had me bawling at the end. Full out bawling. I just loved it so much. I get what all the fuss is about with Katie McGarry. This lady writes seriously great romance. She made me fall in love with everyone, even the secondary characters that I didn't initially think I would care much about. This is a really great book for young adult fans, new adult fans and adult fans alike.4.5/5*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A fantastic new series! By Nicole Hewitt 4.5/5 StarsI don’t know what I expected Nowhere But Here to be exactly, but I do know that it completely exceeded my expectations. This is really the first book I’ve read with the motorcycle club trope, and I didn’t love everything about the club itself, but there were some things that I definitely did love. But, more than that, McGarry had me hooked with this story! I had no idea how many surprises were going to be thrown at me – and I loved them all!!What I loved:Emily and Oz.Emily and Oz seem like an unlikely pair. In fact, they don’t even really think that they like each other at all – though they realize that they’re attracted to each other. But, unlike some books where the guy is actually a jerk and the girl really shouldn’t like him, in this case, Emily and Oz’s denials were really based on preconceived notions of each other. Oz doesn’t like Emily because he thinks that her presence is hurting people he loves (mostly Emily’s grandmother) and he wants to protect those people. He sees Emily as judgmental (which she can be sometimes) and doesn’t want to look past that. Emily, on the other hand, has been raised to believe that the people in the motorcycle club are dangerous, so she’s leery of all of them. Add to that the fact that Oz obviously doesn’t want her around at the beginning and it’s easy to see why she’s not his biggest fan. But I LOVED that this was a slow-burn kind of love story> Emily and Oz had to learn about each other and get to know each other before they could move past their preconceived notions. They’re relationship wasn’t built on attraction alone (though that was a BIG part of it – which, if you see my negatives, you’ll think I’m contradicting myself, but read it, and you’ll see what I mean). These characters needed to grow in some ways before they could truly be togetherr, but the transformation wasn’t one-sided. It wasn’t that Emily just needed to become more open-minded about the club, but also that Oz needed to see outside of his small view of the world and realize that life outside the club existed as well. Anyway, overall I adored Emily and Oz together and the progression of their romance!Sex (or lack thereof). Finally a YA book that addresses sex without having the main characters fall into bed with each other the minute they get together! Emily gains some real wisdom from Violet, one of the club girls. Violet tells her that it’s okay to be the kind of girl who sleeps with boys (thus kind of addressing the whole slut shaming issue), but it’s ALSO okay to be the type of girl who doesn’t – that the main thing is that you have to figure out what type of person you are and stay true to yourself. Emily takes that message to heart and chooses not to have sex – and Oz respects that. BUT that doesn’t mean that there aren’t steamy scenes in this book! I love that the message is given that full-on sex is not the only way to satisfy raging hormones and that you can choose to go only so far (and still be happy!). I assume, from the trajectory of Emily and Oz’s relationship, that they will at some point in the distant future have sex, but they wait and it doesn’t happen within the timeframe of the book. This was so refreshing to see!Family. This book really highlighted what it means to be family in so many ways. First off, there’s Emily’s family situation. She has an adoptive father who she considers to be her true dad. He raised her and she is fiercely loyal to him, not wanting him to feel in any way overshadowed by her biological father. But her dad realizes that Emily needs to put together some of the puzzle pieces of her biological family and her past in order to move forward with her life in positive ways and he encourages her to get to know her biological father and his family. Emily’s relationship with these people is tenuous at best – she doesn’t understand her biological father in a lot of ways and she fears their way of life – but she slowly realizes that she has bonds with them that are important. Then there’s the club, which, in many ways, is stronger than biological family. One of the basic tenets of the club is that they take care of each other – that they are loyal to each other above all else. Finally, there is another side to Emily’s biological family that you discover late in the book (which I won’t go into obviously), which makes it obvious that blood doesn’t automatically make someone family. Family is explored in so many different ways in this book – I LOVED that!Twists and turns. You know from the beginning that there are definitely some mysteries when it comes to Emily’s family, but I still found myself shocked every time something new was revealed. McGarry managed to somehow perfectly balance giving clues so that you felt like you were learning things about Emily’s past and you didn’t get frustrated with the mysteries without giving away details that made the reveals lose their impact! The negatives:Women in the club. The one and only thing about this book that I wasn’t crazy about was the way that women were viewed in the motorcycle club. It’s kind of a tricky issue because some of the club’s views could be viewed as misogynistic – women aren’t allowed in the actual club and have no say in club business, and the club itself has bras hung all over the walls and strippers are seen as pretty normal. I had a hard time being on board with all of that. At one point Oz calls Emily out for judging them for all of this – and I have to confess that I was kind of judging them too. I get that this is their lifestyle and we shouldn’t judge others for the way that they live (the women there were mostly pretty happy with the situation and Emily did come to understand that they were respected – just in a different way than she was used to) – but, I don’t know how I feel about it in the end. I can tell you that some people will HATE this aspect of the book. I’m on the fence, but I liked that, in the end, while Oz stood by the actions and beliefs of his club, he did show a little more personal restraint and respected what he believed Emily would want when it came down to it – maybe this is one of those cases where there’s more hope for the younger generation? Anyway, I feel like I could easily write an entire discussion post on this one subject (and I think I will!), but I will stop talking about it for now.Attraction as love. This is a small detail, but I have to bring it up because it’s so pervasive in YA books and it bugs me. Emily comments several times about how she is SO attracted to Oz and that kissing him is WAY different than kissing the couple of boys she’s kissed (once) in the past. The idea here is that you can tell with one kiss whether or not you’re “meant” for someone, which makes me crazy! The reason I don’t take off more stars for this is because Emily was smart enough to realize that attraction isn’t the ONLY factor to consider and fought against her feelings for Oz for quite awhile. Still, just once, I’d like to see the girl end up with a boy where their first kiss is awkward and not perfect and full of chemistry, but things build from there. Just once. (If you know of a book like this, tell me!!)Despite a couple of flaws, I couldn’t give this book any less than 4.5 stars. I just enjoyed it too darn much! Nowhere But Here was a fantastic exploration of what it means to be a family and how we need to look beyond our preconceived notions and the tiny box we live in to see the world from other perspectives. I give it 4.5/5 stars.***Disclosure: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. No other compensation was given and all opinions are my own.***

Nowhere But Here is actually just boring and melodramatic. Emily heads off to her mother’s hometown for her grandmother’s wake, but it turns out that the old woman isn’t dead yet. She’s just preparing for the end, and she wants to get to know her only granddaughter. Then some members from the rival biker gang show up at the motel where Emily’s family is staying, and now she needs their protection for the summer until things are under control. It also gives Emily an opportunity to find out what her mother has been hiding from her.Nowhere But Here has some great stuff going for it but it never came together for me. The whole rival gang thing was very much in the background, Emily was annoying, her grandmother was even more annoying, and I was just bored. What really held my attention was what her family is keeping from her. No one is willing to say anything, and they’re acting like it’s the worst thing in the universe. But then it comes out, and I was like oh. Then I figured out one of the following reveals, and when that was I confirmed, I was like oh. It really wasn’t as big of a deal as everyone was making it out to be.I really did not like Emily. She was quite frustrating to me. After the rival gang appears at her motel and she gets rescued, her stepfather manages to convince her that she’s not in danger. He claims that motorcycle clubs are like a Sci-Fi convention for tough men, and all of this is just a game. She believes him, despite everyone who is actually involved telling her otherwise. Wouldn’t they know better than her stepfather who is not involved in any way, shape, or form? Then Emily gets upset that she’s been lied to when the truth comes out. She’s known since the beginning that she’s been lied to, and knows what she’s been lied to about, she just doesn’t know the real story. So why is she crying that everyone is a liar near the end?! She knew that already! Oh, and Emily “detests dogs.” She says this, and tells this adorable creature who just wants to comfort her that she hates him. Well, I hate you, Emily. As for Emily’s grandmother, Olivia, I could not stand her. The whole club worships this woman, but she is mean! Yes, she’s dying and everyone is sad about that, but come on! She is horrible to everyone, and she essentially tries to hold Emily hostage just because she wants her there. Emily doesn’t know these people! She doesn’t have to stay with you just because you lock the doors and won’t let her stepfather take her home! Then she’s all cryptic for the entire book, leaving Emily little hints and clues about her past instead of just telling her! Not to mention that Oz (the love interest and other POV) is initially pissed at Emily for not spending time with Olivia. Emily had never met her before! And the first time she does, the woman scares the crap out of her and won’t let her leave! Why do they all love this woman so much?!Nowhere But Here didn’t really do it for me. I have no opinion on the actual romance, because it was just kind of there, caught under the chaos of everything else I was annoyed by. Nothing happens for like 400 pages, and then when it does, it’s over in like ten pages, and then it’s back to Olivia.*Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley for review. Charlie, Presumed Dead, by Anne Heltzel

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Presumed dead in an explosion, Charlie Price is being mourned at his funeral in Paris, which is attended by friends and family. Charlie's death is a tragedy—he was young, charming, and full of life. A world traveler, he was also something of a playboy; both Audrey and Lena loved Charlie and thought that they were the only women in his life. When they meet at the funeral, it sets them off on a whirlwind journey around the globe, where they must confront the questions that come up time and time again: did they really know Charlie? Did anyone? And is Charlie, presumed dead, actually gone for good? Travel descriptions and fast-paced writing sprinkled with intrigue and horror spin this story forward at an enjoyable pace. Teen suspense fans will be satisfied with the Gone Girl-esque feeling of the work. The first in a series, the ending may leave some tearing at their hair, but the promise of more books will keep many readers salivating. VERDICT Recommended as a primary purchase.—Clair Segal, LREI, New York City

Review “If the perfect summer book makes your heart race and your pulse pound, we've got some page-turners for you.”—Entertainment Weekly’s 10 Great Thrillers for Your Beach Reading List   “A trippy, globetrotting mysterious adventure, this is a twisty and fun read.”—RT Book Reviews   “Like Amelia Anne Is Dead and Gone, the characters are not who they seem; like We Were Liars, the truth is masked by delusion.”—BookPage   “A compelling read, one that will provoke adventure-lust, a need to experience the strange, the fearful, and the unknown.”—Boston Globe “A creepy, thrilling tangled web of book. I couldn’t put it down. Anne Heltzel has written two bold, complicated young women as they embark on an adventure through Europe and Asia, unraveling the disappearance of their shared boyfriend, Charlie (presumed dead). Their mystery is everybody’s mystery at some point, whether we like it or not: Who is this person I’m dating and what are they hiding?”—David Iserson, author of Firecracker “Buckle in tight. Charlie, Presumed Dead is a mystery wrapped in a puzzle strapped in a roller coaster. Full of compelling characters and exotic settings, this dark and twisty thrill ride kept me up late and kept me guessing.”—Fiona Paul, author of the Eternal Rose trilogy “So twisty and devious that I couldn’t stop turning the pages, Charlie Presumed Dead is also a story with heart. I was fascinated by the unfolding of an unlikely friendship between two very different young women who become a force to be reckoned with. I loved it.”—Marie Rutkoski, author of The Winner’s Curse "An edgy thriller that keeps the guesses coming until the last word."—Kirkus "As the layers of each character's duplicity are carefully revealed, the unearthing of blackmail, revenge, red herrings, and more makes for a thrilling and immersive tale of manipulation as wily as Charlie himself."—Publishers Weekly "Travel descriptions and fast-paced writing sprinkled with intrigue and horror spin this story forward at an enjoyable pace. Teen suspense fans will be satisfied with the Gone Girl–esque feeling of the work."—School Library Journal "Teens shouldn't come here looking for a happy ending or even justice delivered but for a creepy race toward a bone-wracking shudder."—Bulletin

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. interesting enough By The NerdHerd Reads I was mixed on this one. I'm not super into mysteries or thrillers but this one caught my attention. I did enjoy it, and it kept me wondering. While it did have its ups and downs, I did think it was executed well.Aubrey flies across the ocean to London to attend the funeral of her boyfriend when she makes a shocking discovery: he had another girlfriend. And while Aubrey was kept secret from his family, everyone knew about Lena. When the two girls come face-to-face, they agree that something suspicious is going on, and set out to discover what it is. Lena is sure that Charlie isn't actually dead, while Aubrey has a terrible secret she needs to make sure no one finds out.I thought both the characters were established very well. Although it was dual perspective, both girls remained clear and separate. These girls can barely trust each other, yet they set out to London, India, Bangkok together to find out the truth. I loved how they came to a friendship, even though they still are uneasy. Both are harboring secrets, but realize they have to trust each other to make it work. Both girls have never really had best friends before, so this is new for them. I thought their characters were built up very well and grew very well. The plot also kept me guessing. There were some things that I did not see coming. The story was suspenseful and exciting, and even takes a deadly turn. However, some things were built up only to fall flat. I also had issue with the ending, which was quite abrupt. I went into it thinking it was a standalone, and now I'm not sure. I did love the different settings, and even the surprise of a third perspective I won't say because of spoilers. But it brought a depth and interest to the story. All in all, I think this story was well done. While it was mysterious, I'm not sure how much of a "thriller" it was. Although there were some plot twists, some things also fell flat. But I did love the characters and how they change and grow. However, if there were to be a sequel, I'm not necessarily sure that I would read it.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Not For Me By Pacey1927 A reader can't possibly love every book they read. And a book can't possibly be loved by every person who reads it. I did not love "Charlie, Presumed Dead". I loved the general plot: Charlie dies under questionable or at least odd circumstances. At his funeral his girlfriend meets his other girlfriend. Together they decide to find out if Charlie really is dead and if not they hope to confront him.Anne Heltzel is a good author. The story was well-written but not always engaging. There were many times that the novel stalled which really should not happen since the girls jump from one crazy escapade into another. I did like both girls and my favorite part of the novel was seeing their friendship develop. I thought the author did a fantastic job of making sure both girls had distinct voices since they take turns narrating the chapters. I started the novel not liking Charlie and I ended it the same. However I did not feel like I learned anything real about Charlie. He told a lot of lies and kept two girlfriends but we don't ever understand what made him tick. I could never determine who I could trust in the book and while that should have been a good plot device, ultimately it just became sad and disappointing. I also did not find it believable that the girls were teenagers, one just finishing high school. They were running all around poverty stricken countries and their parent's did nothing more than demand they come home. Weird. When I was reading the book I felt like they behaved like women in their mid twenties. It may have helped make this book more believable. But that ending was just not right! It was the worst kind of cliffhanger where absolutely nothing is resolved and you know that you will need to read another book in a year to find out what happens. Unfortunately, I am not entertained or invested enough to read a sequel. Many people loved this book and I can see why. It just was not a good fit for me.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a good mind F By Michelle@Book Briefs Charlie Presumed Dead is a young adult suspense thriller that will have you jet-setting all over the world just to find out if Charlie is really dead or not. The book starts out with Charlie's funeral, where there are two girls who both think they are Charlie's girlfriend. Serious girlfriend, at that. Neither one knew about the other, and as soon as they become aware of the other one, they find themselves confused by the other person's Charlie. That was actually the aspect of Charlie that intrigued me the most. Sure he was a cheating jerk. That is obvious from the book summary, but Lena's Charlie loved Olives and Aubrey's Charlie Hated them with a passion. As soon as I read that, I knew this was going to be more than just a morbid scavenger hunt. There are so many layers to Charlie Presumed Dead. It is one hell of a ride. The book is told through the points of view of Lena and Aubrey mostly, with a couple of scatterings of Charlie and memories thrown in for good measure. I know that may seen like a lot to keep track of, but it really isn't. Lena and Aubrey are on this crazy adventure together so their switching chapters just continue on the story. It moves really fluidly. I liked Lena and Aubrey. It was hard for me to figure out which one I liked more and which one I felt worse for. I liked them both pretty equally. And this book is just as much about them as it is about finding Charlie. Because everyone has their own secrets to unravel and reveal throughout the journey. And some of the secrets are real doozies. The mystery aspect of the plot was really well done. I had no idea which way this book was going to turn out, and I couldn't have predicted the ending at all. It really shocked me. There was one point in the book about 3/4th of the way through where there was a pretty big reveal and I thought, 'ok, now what? Mystery solved, what else could possible happen?' HAHA, oh man, was I wrong. The book took a turn for the even crazier at that point and the ending was nuts! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I couldn't read the pages fast enough. This is one book that you really have to experience for yourself. It is pretty cool. It will take you on a real mind bend. I want to crawl inside Anne Heltzel's head and just stay there awhile, because I have no idea where she gets some of this crazy from. I loved Charlie Presumed Dead, and I think anyone that enjoys mystery, suspense, and a good mind F will too!*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A remarkable (and romantic) gender-swapped retelling of Jane Austen's classic By Sally Bend Where the first chapter was a lot of introduction and scene setting, Part 2 is very much about that budding romance. It all begins when Alex is rescued by a couple of violent bullies by Barry Beaumont, son of TV personality Tom Beaumont. What began as a confusing sort of crush soon grows into young love, with Alex embracing his femininity through his relationship with a masculine young man. It is a very sweet story, never going any further than passionate kisses (and a little tentative groping), that explores the butterfly-like transformation of Alex. We get to see how the petite young sheboy interacts with boys and girls his own age, how he deals with Barry's family, and how he copes with being in the public eye.It is in this second chapter that we also learn how much Arcadia is still evolving, and what kind of vision Cleo Sherwood has for the future. She loves her wifeboy and sheboys dearly, and understands how difficult it can be for them to adjust. As much as she dreams of seeing her children married into Female Led marriages of their own, she has no problem with Alex dating a boy, and is genuinely happy to see him come out of his shell. In addition, with his dreams in mind, she is also looking to create a nursing program for young sheboys, partly to deal with the island's nursing shortage, but more to bring Alex a little closer to his dream.I do not know if Kit Scarbrough has any further Reluctant Transgen tales planned, but I would dearly love to spend more time on Arcadia Island. It is such a lovely world she has created, and I really did fall in love with the entire Sherwood family. More than that, though, Scarbrough manages to tell a story that works because of the Gender Shift society behind it, but which is not defined by the concept. She has a wonderful writing style, a flair for characters, and a fantastic ear for dialogue that comes across as natural, even when talking about unusual ideas. Despite blathering on, I know I have barely scratched the surface here, but please take my word for it and give the first book a read - you will not regret it!
