Currently a student at Texas A&M, Gareth will someday change the world. FATE calls people like Gareth “FIPs”—future important people—and they’re everywhere, each with a FATE-trained shadow.   But when disaster strikes, Ren will have to turn on her maker. Together with Junie, a fellow abductee and the one person she trusts, Ren takes Gareth on the run.   Because whatever else happens, failure is not an option. From the Hardcover edition.

Happily, I Become Shadow does it very well, with a few plot twists that I really didn't see coming. There are important people in our world who will change the world, but for now they are young and need to be watched, protected, and who better than someone taken young, trained brutally, then altered mentally to make that person the most important person in their life, someone they would truly lay their life down for. That is the premise of I Become Shadow. The plot is tight, the story intriguing. Ren succeeds, and fails, enough to make the story believable and kept me wanting to read more. I am looking forward to what I hope is a another book in the series.

A friend of mine recommended I read this book, I did, and I would further recommend anyone to read it! It is a fast-paced thriller, a page-turner, a book you won't want to put down until you've finished it. Mr. Shine develops the characters and describes the settings beautifully (in first person dialogue from the point of view of Ren- the strong female lead character along the lines of Katniss). This is a great, quick read for Young Adults and all Adults. I'm looking forward to the next Joe Shine novel.

Wiles Parker Once I got past the whole premise being a bit on the ridiculous side of things and the fact the explanation of the events surrounding main character Ren's existence, I Become Shadow became a popcorn book. There isn't a lot of depth or even a lot of logic to the plot, but it is one heck of a ride. Joe Shine casts Ren as the outcast and what happens next is really an overused device to make her more interesting. She becomes a killer assassin. Sprinkle in some love triangle and a barely explained conspiracy plot and there you go. Book.Despite the obvious flaws and general lack of clear explanation, it's hard not to enjoy Ren's narrative. She's full of sarcasm, generally likable (which makes her outcast phase at the start a little weird unbelievable), and kicks some serious behind and takin' names as needed. I dare you not to finish this book wanting more and, like, right now. From a shallow action adventure story standpoint, it's top of the class in a good way.

The story goes like this: Seth Boynton Cheney left home when he was 16 years old to join the Gold Rush to California. His descendants, however, have had a hard time finding footprints for him during those years. For many decades his family knew only that he was a 49er, by 1880 he was in the Texas Panhandle and by 1882 in southwestern Kansas, starting a family with a woman 30 years younger than him. Where was he for those missing years, and what was he doing? This book is primarily for the descendants of Seth Cheney. It gives them a little information on Seth, and throws a spotlight on the missing years, as well as on the rest of his life. It includes twenty pages of information on the immigrant ancestor, John Cheney of Newbury, and his son Peter. They are Seth's ancestors.

In the process, you keep finding more and more electronic and paper footprints that sometimes leave you with more questions than answers. That's what David and his relatives tried to do, prove family lore. If you're into genealogy research you know how difficult it can be research your family tree. Finding dates of births, deaths and marriages is one thing but what did your ancestor do between the official census times? Is that misspelled name your ancestor or not? And who is that person living in the household that no one has a clue as to who they are?David gives insight into the difficulties of trying to reconstruct someone's life more than 100 years after they've passed away. Everyone who knew them in person has also passed away. They have letters, photos and lore. What is true? What is fiction? We may never know for sure.If you have a interest in genealogy and/or history of this country's migration west, you'll enjoy this book.

Maybe more suited to YA audience By Amazon Customer -Eva-Marie is the daughter of Chicago’s biggest drug producer.David is the son of Chicago PD’s Chief of Police. These two fall for each other without knowing that they are each other’s greatest enemy. They have society against them as well as their parents, and their situations threatening to tear them apart. Will their love be enough to defy the odds against them? Told from both characters’ point of view and set in the state of Illinois in 1950, The Improbable, is a compelling romantic novel that pushes the envelope of the typical love story and will keep you hooked until the very last page.I liked this story although at times it felt like it moved at a slower pace. I think that this book is probably more suited to 18+YA audience. One of the things I did notice pretty early on is that Eva-Marie and David shared at least one thing in common. Disapproving and controlling parents. The control that Eva-Marie's parents (especially her father) had is almost complete, and kind of hard to take. Her mother is controlling as well but in a more sneaky, underhanded way. David's father is straight in your face control. There is a secret that Eva-Marie's family is hiding and that is mentioned fairly early on. So is the words that the clock is ticking. That made for a mysterious setting and as bit by bit more is revealed, I kept thinking how is this going to end well for these two young people. Add a creep level when you consider Eva's pseudo boyfriend, Ray. Now there is an unlikable stalker that there ever was. I hated how Eva had to "suck up" to Ray when she really hated being around him.Something that also added to the story was David's hair trigger temper; I liked him but he sure had some surprising episodes or anger. Could it not only be because of his mother's death but also the repressed anger against his father? That makes sense to me.This story did have some twists and turns and a few surprises that kept me reading. I wanted to know how it was all going to end. I do have to admit that at times it was kind of hard for me to get through though. I pointed out the positive first, but also knowing there was a bit of the downside too. Sorry, author, I know a lot goes into writing a story.I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The story like was just not believable in any way By Wildflower I found this book really unbelievable. The story like was just not believable in any way!!! Only thing believable was the tittle.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Hard to get through. By Myah This is the first time an author has given me their book for free in exchange for an honest review. I hope I'm not too harsh but I have high expectations for books. It was hard to get through the book, because of how it was written. The words did not flow right and it all seemed jumbled together. The book was placed in the 1950's and one of the main character's is African American so you would expect some racial tension but this was not the case. I know the author, Tiara, didn't want the book to be all about race and segregation but it just made the book unbelievable. Sorry, I don't like to be mean, but this was my honest opinion.

Thinking nothing of an epileptic seizure, my carefree and single-thinking lifestyle continued as usual. That was until the results of the scan. A brain tumour stopped me in my tracks. Suddenly I had to rely on others. Moving out of my crime-ridden area was supposed to be a positive move towards recovery following the most mind bending experience of "awake" brain surgery. But Sarah and I couldn't have been more wrong. Our new home was in the flat beneath the neighbours from hell. Radiotherapy may have been easy if it hadn’t been for the scum determined to make our lives a misery, sending me to the brink of despair. With a lifestyle that featured an unhealthy amount of alcohol and facing up to my addictions and self-loathing, the early grave was looking more likely than the millionaire life I dreamed of. Getting back to work and experiencing new cultures helped to put me back on track. Rather than dwell on my own self-pity I drew inspiration from the world and people around me until finally I'd gotten hold of a normal life. A normal life that didn't last long. The townships in Africa, the petrol bombings, murders and car crashes that I'd witnessed in such a small space of time; none of them came close to the next chapter in my life. Finding out I would be a dad was one thing, but triplets? The path forward from there on in would prove to be chaotic but truly magical. The joys of a becoming a triplet father from that astonishing moment of the baby scan through to the events of the birth and beyond, coupled with the devastating deaths of good friends taught me the true meaning of life. But all that was the easy bit…

About the Author What is there to tell about Daniel Lewis? By his own admission he’s Mr Average. Average height, average weight, average grades, average at sports, average looking, averagely popular. What’s different about him? Nothing. He grew up in an average house in Southampton, England. He wasn't spoilt but he wasn't mistreated either. He’s never been struck by lightning, he didn't win the lottery, he’s never been in trouble with the law. Except for that one time when…..never mind. Anyway, there’s nothing much to tell. That is until his late 20's when an epileptic seizure struck out of the blue and led to a shock diagnosis. He kept a regular blog of his experiences from early on in his treatment which drew attention from an increasing audience, and after further life-changing surprises over the next few years, followers began suggesting he should think about writing a book. Brain Tumours for Dummy’s is his far-from-average, deeply personal account of how he overcame brain cancer to become a father to triplets. Dan’s book is available as a digital download or paperback on Amazon and has been featured in The Daily Echo and on BBC Radio. Having caught the writing bug he is currently working on some new projects, but when he’s not jotting down ideas he and his partner, Sarah, enjoy spending every spare moment with their precious children, Jarvis, Joel and Leila. You can connect with Dan at www.braintumourdfordummys.co.uk or via social media by searching for DanLewisBTFD.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Catalyst kept me guessing and on my toes all the way through it. By Nancy Allen (The Avid Reader) I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.Seven's younger sister Sonnet is so mean to her. She is always putting her down and saying mean things to her. She even says mean things about her to other people and right in front of Seven at that. I don't know where to hate (no not hate that is such a strong word, dislike is a better word) Sonnet or feel bad for her because she hates her sister so much. But I am not sure that she actually hates her or if it is the only way she can deal with the pain and hurt that is probably going on in her heart for her dying sister. By hating her or pretending that she is may be the only way she can stop the hurt and deal with the unfairness that the world or who or whatever is taking away the life that her big sister has ahead of her that she is never going to experience.Yes, Seven is dying and no one really knows how long she has to live. She could die today, tomorrow, next week or next month. The medical personnel do what they can for her but that is not much. They just try to make her life a little easier for her until her time is up. The place where Seven lives has a wall all the way around it and she has never been on the other side of the wall. She has no idea what is out there. All she knows is what she has been told. She knows that there are people who live on the other side of the wall and that they are called scrubs. Seven has been taught that you can't trust a scrub and that they are the scum of the earth. And that is what she believed until she met one on one of the times that she snuck out of the house. On this one particular time when she was caught and was being escorted back home by soldier Enoch. On their way back to her home they saw a man that was trying to hide from them. Soldier Enoch saw that the person he was chasing was a scrub he arrested him and put him in the back seat with Seven. At first she was afraid of him because of how she was raised. But after seeing that he was no different than her she decides to help him escape.Seven's family was part of the rich class of people in her world and could afford anything nearly that they wanted. In Seven's world they had what they called companions and anyone could own one if they had enough money to buy one. So with Seven being sick her father told her that he was going to buy her a companion and she could pick out her companion herself. Seven wasn't too keen on the idea of having a companion. She figured that this companion was to be like a watch dog and would run to her father and tell him everything she did. Seven knew that her father expected her to pick a young girl to be her companion. But Seven was feeling rebellious when they arrived at the action. They were like ten people for her to choose from. She got to choose first because of her father's wealth and position in society. Just imagine the surprise when she saw the scrub Mitis that she helped to escape standing there waiting to be picked as a companion. So guess who rebellious Seven chose as her companion. Yep, you got it, Mitis. Her father was fit to be tied as they say. His temperature probably went up quite a few degrees. But he did tell her that it was her choices and he couldn't go back on his word in front of all the people there.Seven never expected to like Mitis because he was a scrub but the more time she spent with him and they both got to know each other better they decide that maybe not all of their enemies were their enemy after all. Seven had a list of things that she wanted to do before she died and her plan was for Mitis to help her do everything on her list and Mitis was just as determined as she was after he found out how nice she was. I was very surprised by a lot of the things that happened in Mitis and Seven's lives and how they lived and were treated. I was so very happy for them when they became friends. They realized that they were not different they were the same and that it didn't matter what level of the ladder you were on in society or what you believed everyone was still the same. The only way to tell one class from another are the clothes on their backs or maybe the vehicle someone drives or the home they live in but that still doesn't make us any different from the next person. They came to the realization that the only thing that is important was what was in someone's heart and how they felt about everybody. They also realized that the only thing that made people different was the love or hate they felt for others and how they treated each other.I really loved and enjoyed reading Seven and Mitis' story. There were times that I was thrown for a loop. I would be expecting one thing and would get another. I would be reading and be like ok I got this I know what is going to happen next but nope I was wrong. Catalyst kept me guessing and on my toes all the way through it. I have found another author to go on my list for favorite authors. This is one book that everyone needs to read. In my opinion Catalyst needs no age limit put on it. I have been told on more than one occasion that I need to non-fiction books that I can't learn anything from a fiction book but undoubtedly they have never read a fiction book because I learn something from just about every book I read and Catalyst is no exception. I learned a lot from Catalyst and hope to learn and read more of Seven and Mitis' story. I also plan on checking out other books by Casey.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Catalyst is an AMAZING story about people who refuse to let the powers that be control and destroy their lives. By Wendy What happens when two very different people discover that they share a common quest for what is just and right? Catalyst! This is the fabulous tale of . Win, lose or draw, they had to try! Catalyst is a full-length novel that can stand alone or be read as the prequel to the Harvest Saga, which is the BEST YA dystopian romance series I've read in a long time!!! Either way, I just have one word to describe this story... Catalyst was SQUEEEEEEE-MAZING! I thought the way the author put this story together was genius! She made the characters so relatable and real that they became living, breathing parts of my life. I just wish I could hang out with them! I could feel their pain, their struggles, their CHEMISTRY!!! I was really pulled into their plight emotionally and was rooting for them to somehow prevail. Their journey has it all - ups, downs and a whopper of a twist that I wasn't expecting. People of all ages are going to love this book! I definitely recommend it!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read Dystopian Story By cristieAll I absolutely loved reading Catalyst!!It is a Dystopian story.. You can read it as a stand alone or a prequel to The Harvest Saga Series..The story is about Mitis who is on a mission of revenge and Seven who has list of things she want to do before she dies.. From the first time they meet there is a Spark between them.. Mitis is from a village and Seven is from upper class. They are thrown together in his need for revenge and her need for help. Their path leads them to discover something so much more sinister than they ever imagined and in the process they become closer than they ever wanted or imagined..Catalyst is well written and has plenty of twist and turns to keep you enthralled in the story.. You will fall in love with the Characters and root for them to succeed.

By Musashi This omnibus of Flash Gordon is a lot of fun to read and the artwork is excellent in portraying the major players. Be aware that the story may indeed be continued in another omnibus or series of graphic novels. For me it was good to see Zarkov, Dale and Flash all work in concert without any of them being dead wait, or doing incredibly stupid things that gets everyone in trouble from one moment to another. Flash is a wild one and he definitely gets the group in and out of scrapes, but he follows his heart and what's the right thing to do, and that makes it refreshing without being heavy handed. There is also some additional artwork on the last few pages which have the characters in vignettes with different story elements and artwork. Revel in the adventure as Flash tries to liberate the brutally ruled masses of Mongo and continue to the protect the Earth from invasion.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not the Flash Gordon I was looking for. By W. Daniel Preece I wanted to love this. I feel like this series was intended for me.... but the portrayal of Flash Gordon himself killed it for me.Flash Gordon is a classic adventure hero. He's a man of ability and character. This version, however, has been "modernized," meaning he's a half-wit. Impetuous, foolish, brash, slapped around by his daddy's servants--more a spoiled college brat, less of a man of the world. Just about everything that Flash has NOT been these last 70+ years. And Zarkov is a drunk. So Dale Arden is the only character capable of staying on task.If you're buying this with only a passing interest in the character (watched the 80s movie or late 80s cartoon) then maybe you'll love this. If you've enjoyed the Alex Raymond run or the Al Williamson comics, this will come up a bit short.Art and design-wise, it looks pretty good.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not to Miss By Charles Coulter This is the sort of retro book that courts me, that I would generally pass, knowing there is no Alex Raymond or Russ Manning today. Don't make that mistake. This is faitful, fun sequential art that can only occur in this medium when film would no doubt "tart" up the material into something that it is not. Literally a favorite version of this story.

Some battles bleed so much, and for so long, that the earth never truly forgets their dead. Some battles are born of oppression, and some of greed, and some simply because it was written in the stars. Three sisters—Charlemagne, Cairo and Pendragon Agonistes—are sent from America to England to live with their eccentric grandparents after their mother disappears and their father falls to pieces. But before the girls have time to find their feet, Charlemagne is married off to a dead man, Penny takes a nap and wakes up as a boy, and Cairo is swept into a dangerous romance with a man who wants her for more than her considerable charm. With the girls wrapped up in a conflict they barely understand, they don’t notice that their grandmother is transforming, or that the two demigod assassins who took their mother are now coming for them—if one of them can get over his crisis of conscience. In this richly painted tale, at whose heart is the unbreakable bond of family and blood, the world of Seraphina collides with our own as three unique girls are dragged into twilight lives past, fighting for vengeance, retribution, and the survival of their exiled people.

Songs of Seraphina, by Jude Houghton

About the Author Jude Houghton developed a love of fantasy from a relatively early age after realising an innate talent for making stuff up could result in something other than detention. A somnambulist, insomniac, lover of letters, Jude writes late into the night, most nights, tumbling down the rabbit hole to dream of other lives. Jude currently lives in Pennsylvania with an over-enthusiastic family and absurdly entitled dog.

A début novel difficult to put down By Lerma M The début novel of Jude Houghton is targeted at a “teenage-plus” audience, and certainly hits the bulls-eye. Young Adult readers will find this book difficult to put down.Without giving too much away, three sisters are sent from America to England to stay with their eccentric grandparents, whom they have never met, after their mother mysteriously disappears. On their very first night they are taken to a Wake, which they soon realise is not a normal funeral service, and in which the eldest sister suddenly finds herself dangerously involved. As the story unfolds it becomes apparent that the girls have unknowingly inherited special powers and are inhabitants of two worlds, joined together, as the book describes it, like two bubbles coming together in a pool, so that one may almost see from one to the other or the skin is so thin one could reach across. Initially each is unaware that their sisters have the same power, and they find themselves involved in separate adventures in this same other-world. In each case their lives are in danger and at times the story moves at a breathtaking pace, carrying the reader along with it helter skelter. The story is well crafted, and one is hurled along to an ending which is masterful and totally unexpected, leaving the reader clamouring for more which, hopefully, will be provided in a sequel. The author’s use of language, elegant and even exquisite at times, fits each situation exactly, and this latter-day Narnia is enhanced with a map of Seraphina, thoughtfully provided to help stimulate our imagination further. This is a story about girls, but it is highly recommended for readers of all ages and both sexes.

I was expecting it to be readable but not to love it from beginning to end. A brilliant story, beautifully crafted and masterfully written. An amazing first book. I just hope he has already written the sequel and that we won't have to wait too long for it.

YA Christian romance By Mrs. G Jessica is coping with the death of both parents by self-medicating with prescription meds until she meets Caleb, the pastor's son, who helps her overcome her grief. But when wild parties and bizarre love triangles scramble up her life even more, she struggles to know who to trust. The character of Jessica is very well-drawn and believable as a teen. Author Eliza Tilton has done a good job of capturing the girl's voice and mood, and for the most part, I could cheer for her because I could see where she was coming from. Caleb, the primary love interest, was perfect. Actually, almost too perfect. His flaws were all in the past. That said, teen girls will fall in love with him, and I certainly agree that he's the kind of boy they should be looking for. Let's get a few million more of him out there.Since the genre seems to be billed as YA Christian romance, I found myself in a quandary about the balancing act that requires. I think Tilton nailed the YA end of things. Exactly right. The romance was sweet, and they never went past heavy kissing. That said, there was a LOT of kissing. That works for the romance part, but it's where I wondered about the Christian element. Some Christian teens may come away thinking it's okay to make out regularly and passionately because Caleb was able to keep his pants on, but like I said, Caleb was pretty much perfect. Overall, although Jessica was sympathetic, she wasn't really much of a role model of a changing heart. Her faith grows by the end of the story, but I think there could have been more done with that thread of the story by tying the good changes she makes to that growing faith instead of crediting the people around her. Perhaps Tilton was trying not to be heavy-handed or preachy (which she wasn't at all), but it made the message of forgiveness a bit more generic than its category typically features.I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I only recently became acquainted with the author via her social media outlets, so there is no prior relationship to add bias to my opinion.

By purpleshadowhunter Wow,I did not expect that twisted ending. The first few chapters were kinda slow but when it picked up you were on an emotional roller coaster as these teen learn to deal with past hurts that have left them scarred and present life that continuously challenges them to either trust or give up. Their reactions and situations are real life issues that many teens go through(except for the twisted ending). It reminded me of some of the struggles my daughter dealt with in high school and also reminded it me a bit of the movie To Save a Life. With the hurt of losing her parent,Jess's life is slowly swirling out of control yet she finds herself rooted and gains some stability in the arms of Caleb.Jess slowly finds her way back to God after hating him after she lost her mom. However, trusting God when your world seams to be crashing around you over and over is hard,But Caleb has a past that keeps him a little guarded and one night when things get heated faith in each other gets tested. Can they finally learn to fully trust each other or will they let their insecurity tear them apart? Will meeting Caleb be what brings Jess back to trusting God or push her to away from God forever?

The characters were complex enough to draw me into their lives and make me truly care about what happened to them. Having recently lost my mother myself, I could really relate to the turmoil that Jessica was feeling. Life is hard and I think, if we are honest, we would all admit that we have struggled with being angry with God at some point. Jessica's story offers glimpses of where the road can lead if you wander too far off course, without being too graphic for even an early teen audience, while fulling exploring her journey to find and love.
