About the Author Rebecca Phillips has been a fan of contemporary young adult fiction ever since she first discovered Judy Blume at the age of twelve. After a brief stint writing bad poetry as a teenager, she finally found her niche with realistic, coming‑of‑age YA. Her novel, Out of Nowhere, was a finalist in the 2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest. She's also the author of the Just You series. Rebecca lives just outside the beautiful city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, with her husband, two children, and one spoiled rotten cat. She absolutely loves living so close to the ocean. Add in a mom who cares about sleazy boyfriends more than her daughter and an absentee drug addict father, Faking Perfect has the workings of a pretty good contemporary!And yet, I could use only one word to describe what I felt through the whole book: nothing. The writing was so detached, I should say- with no exaggeration or emotion, even though all the elements for a good book were there, there was nothing I felt.I did finish the book, but I feel like I must elaborate. Her mother doesn't care about a thing she does? And rather than feeling anything, or even holding some sort of grudge, she simply accepted it. No feelings involved. Her new 'perfect' friends. That was a concept I didn't get AT ALL! She knows, she knows that they're not really her friends, that she's someone completely different around them, that they think she's some screw up and they're always judging her, but she doesn't care. She even calls what she's doing a facade, but she keeps at it. But even that is talked about as if it's nothing.And then she starts dating the golden boy. And then she KNOWS that he's controlling, that he's pitting her against her best friend, and that its all an act with him and the kisses done make her feel anything, but keeps at it. I mean, if you know, then why are you still there?Overall, a book I wouldn't really recommend. 3 stars.

I especially love reading Young Adult when the characters are impossibly authentic. FAKING PERFECT was like looking through a window into a real teenager's life, filled with the pressure of needing to fit in, the constant struggle of hiding your past, and seeking a better future.1. Lexi Shaw lives her days in constant fear of being tossed to the bottom of the social hierarchy. She worked hard to create the image her friends see -- the perfect girl with little to no problems in her personal life. I could practically feel the sadness she radiated whenever she talked about having to save face around her "friends." Her unhappiness was real, but she disregarded it because she felt like she needed to be better than what she thought she was.2. Lexi starts hooking up with the one guy her friends -- I'm using this term very loosely -- would absolutely despise, Tyler Flynn. Lexi keeps her relationship with him confined to the four walls of her bedroom, but some things just can't be contained.3. Tyler Flynn -- I love you. You are amazing and beautiful and so very fictional that it hurts. "He made me feel uneasy, unbalanced, alive. He made me feel wanted."4. "All I knew about Tyler's personal life was that he felt disregarded, angry and severely lacking -- which was why, I supposed, I'd been drawn to him. We'd sensed a deficiency in each other ,an emptiness begging to be filled." I looooved this. Lexi speaks a harsh, but undeniable truth. My admiration for her knows no bounds.5. This story really brings to life the overwhelmingness of being a teenager and attempting to fit in, even if it means molding yourself to be accepted by people that don't really matter in the long run.FAKING PERFECT shows you that the people you need aren't always the people you think you want. Rebecca Phillips is spot-on with her writing; I thoroughly enjoyed this one!

She has spent the past three years reinventing herself and trying so hard to get the world to see her as she wants to be seen. Even if it's not the real her. But I mean really who could blame her? Her mother is a horrible alcoholic who dates losers and her father is an addict that hasn't been in her life since she was four. I think she's so desperate not to be like her mother that she is willing to spend everyday chasing that unattainable perfection that she craves. Although she uses Tyler and ignores him at school, not wanting anyone to know about them, I think there's also a poetic romance to the fact that for a long time he is the only one who truly knows the real Lexi. Of course she is caught up on golden boy Ben. She thinks he is perfect and that appeals to her. If she could be Ben's girlfriend then that means she's good enough for Mr. Perfect himself right? But people aren't always who we think they are or want them to be and Lexi has to find this out the hard way. Tyler is not as prominent in this story as I'd like but he is an ever looming presence. He starts breaking Lexi's rules and acting out but also Lexi can't seem to stop thinking about him. He is not who she thinks she should be with at all but she craves his touch. On top of all of that she finds out some things about her dad and has to try to deal with that as well.Overall I really enjoyed Faking Perfect. It was a quick read and had believable and flawed characters just the way I like. I could really relate to Lexi struggling with figuring out that line between being better, being herself, and trying too hard to be perfect. One of my favorite things about this book is how raw and honest it is. The trials Lexi faced are a great representation of things that a true teenager may have to deal with in day to day life. Faking Perfect is a great YA contemporary about self discovery and I'd highly recommend it to fans of this genre. I would love to read more from this author.** I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review **
