Delightful YA Romance and series finale By Xkoqueen I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.The Girl I Was Before by Ginger Scott is the third book in her Falling series. Each book has tie-ins to the other books, but they can be read and thoroughly enjoyed as stand-alone books. I loved each one of the books. I would have to say that The Girl I Was Before feels a little more intense than that of This is Falling and Everything After.Paige is all about style over substance. She has the looks and the personality. She wants to be the “It” girl with the best, most socially-successful boyfriend. She has a plan and a path to reach her goal. Unfortunately, she makes some stunningly selfish decisions in order to get what she wants. You know the saying, “be careful what you wish for”? It applies to Paige. She got what she thought she wanted but at a significant cost to her sister, Cass. When Paige sees the damage done and the root meanness of her sorority sisters , she is haunted by her poor decisions. When she attempts to retaliate, it’s not clear who she is really trying to punish: her sister's rival,the sorority president, whose reputation might be sullied or herself as she knows she’ll be ostracized by the group she so desperately wanted to be a part of.Paige is one of those characters you want to hate because of her apparent shallowness and callousness, but every once in a while, she does something that is inherently kind and reveals a bit of the girl she was before. Ginger Scott paints a perfect picture of outwardly beautiful and inwardly conflicted Paige.Carson is her macho, ill-mannered frat-boy boyfriend. Aside from getting Paige into all the best parties, he adds nothing to the relationship. In fact, the extent of his disrespect of women is astounding. Carson helps readers see just how insecure Paige has become.Houston is also a student at McConnell, however, his life is a lot more complicated than most students. He does not have much money and he has a lot of baggage. He also has ethics and integrity. He wants to be a carefree college student, but that is not the path his life took. The trials and tribulations he has endured, as well as some carefully told childhood stories by Paige’s sister, Cass, gives him the insight to see the girl Paige was before. He champions her efforts to be that girl again.I love Paige’s vulnerability and bravery as well as Houston’s patience and inner strength. It is delightful to read a story where the female lead is not rescued by a guy. Paige is the princess who can rescue herself and offer strength to the knight in shiny armor.Ginger Scott has another hit on her hands with The Girl I Was Before. She masterfully wove in various story lines from all three of the books in the Falling series. The characters’ dialogue is lyrical. She has added smart, witty humor that doesn’t overwhelm the story. The storyline complexity she has added to The Girl I Was Before makes for a rich reading experience that I know I will be enjoying again very soon. The secondary characters, many of whom were main characters in prior books, add subtle dimensions to Paige’s and Houston’s story without stealing the spotlight. The Girl I Was before is another great story about the ups and downs of life and love in early adulthood. It’s an engaging story about a strong young woman who happens to find an extraordinary young man with whom she falls in love.If you haven’t read any of Ginger Scott’s other books, The Girl I Was Before is sure to make you an ardent fan.*Review has been done in conjunction with Nerd Girl Official.

I didn’t like Paige in the previous books and I wanted to see her transform. And she did! She starts out making a very difficult decision, but that decision, albeit a good one makes her life a living hell. She used to be the one girl that everyone hated and loved at the same time. The big girl on campus next to Chandra in her sorority house. The decision she makes ticks off Chandra and ostracizes her from the sorority house. She has nowhere to go. She doesn’t tell her sister what she did. But she knew when she made that decision her life would be forever altered.She first meets the “sandwich guy”, aka Houston, whenever she got food orders for the sorority house at the store. She comes in one time with her jock boyfriend who treats her like crap and Houston tells her that she could do better. Houston notices her gruffness but sees something else in her too. Well, Paige is beautiful anyway. She looks like a princess to Houston. When she loses her home at the house, Houston offers her the extra room at his house that he and his mom rent out.Houston is my hero, my newest book boyfriend and a major selfless guy. His life at home is different than most college age guys. And I love his character, his integrity, his honesty, his selfless actions and how he cares for his family. I love who he is and the secret he has. I am a succor for guys like him. Ugh, there is so much I want to scream out about him but it would ruin it for you. But his secret runs into the mess that Paige’s decision made. And just when Paige decides she has fallen for him, she realizes she needs to walk away from Houston so the plan he has for his family remains intact. She hurts and he hurts being away from each other.So, I did finally like how Paige became who she used to be before she became the witch with a “B”. I liked how she made decisions that were selfless. And I think way more about Houston for putting up with her during her transformation.

Achingly real, flawless writing By ysar There's just something about Ginger Scott's writing that perfectly captures each moment and emotion in a story. I was pretty much blown away by This is Falling, the first book in this series, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on Paige's story. Paige has never been an easy character to like, but she had a few good moments in the previous books. Despite her seemingly selfish ways, I knew there was more to her when she had absolutely no reaction to Rowe's scars, and I really wanted to see what made her tick.Unlike most romance heroines, Paige is not some perfect but misunderstood girl. She's been selfish, manipulative, and just plain cruel, even to those she loves the most. Her need to be at the top of the social hierarchy has led her to a sorority where bitchiness seems to rule, and her boyfriend is absolutely worthless. She's basically everything you expect from a mean girl, including empty inside. When she sees the futility of everything she's done and become, standing up for herself means a lonely fall from the top.Though she's met Houston before, he really comes into her life when she's facing the consequences of turning against her sorority and her jerk of a now ex-boyfriend. Houston's a genuinely good guy, but he's got a bit of baggage, too, and it's pretty much the last thing anyone expects. He's a single father at a terribly young age, still living at home and sharing as much responsibility as he can with his mother while he tries to finish college. But he's kind to Paige and seems to see past her mistakes, and in doing so he offers her a chance to really grow into herself.The friendship between Paige and Houston is sweet, even more so when they beginning crossing the line into something more. But it's also done very much in a way that feels like it could be real. Houston's daughter comes first, even when he can't deny his feelings for Paige, and it's that love that eventually has Paige putting herself second as well. It felt like Paige wanted to be a better person, but Houston is the one who showed her exactly how that's done.The story is achingly real, with characters who are truly flawed and facing the kinds of challenges not normally played out in romance novels. Houston isn't just some young, single dad with a heart of gold, and Paige isn't some social climber turned angel overnight. Their story is rough at times, making those moments when everything seems to come together that much more perfect. I read a couple hundred books a year and have been doing that for most of my life, but rarely have I found a series – much less an author — who could so perfectly transport me into not just another world, but another person's shoes. Forget the series; just grab everything Ginger Scott has written and get to reading.
