From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—An orphan finds her way in Oliver Twist-like London. Arista is indentured to a malevolent master who lords over her and dozens of other children. Her master's traffic is secrets (such as messages and blackmail payments). Arista dons disguises so convincing that she sometimes loses herself even to herself, amid shadowy and dangerous circumstances. As she comes of age, Arista rebels against her disguises and finds her voice and courage. She is lovely, smart, and fortunate. Her best luck is having a best friend and two boys who adore, champion, and protect her. Plot and character development go hand in glove in this historical work, supported by rich details about the intricate social and political hierarchy of industrializing London. The story line involves Arista attempting one tricky and dangerous mission after another. Each time, she outwits danger and discovery with her own cunning plus friends who have her back. The only romance in the novel is chaste. The title's setting matches that of important mainstays in the English curriculum, such as books by Charles Dickens and the Bronte sisters, but its contemporary style makes it easier to read than the classics. VERDICT A volume for historical fiction fans, which would also be a good choice for readers just getting into the genre.—Amy Thurow, New Glarus School District, WI

Review Secret-life shenanigans in 18th-century London. Seventeen-year-old orphan Arista survives by helping her vile and violent employer blackmail the aristocracy. As the public face of their extortion racket, she slips in and out of costume balls to deliver messages to and collect payments from sleazy courtiers. When, in the line of duty, she crosses paths with an attentive masked stranger, they are both thrown by the force of the instant attraction between them. But the course of true love never did run smooth, and this romance rehashes many timeworn tropes en route to its inevitable happy ending. Arista as a character remains elusive; her inner life is essentially just a loop of vigilant worry, and the third-person perspective puts her at an additional remove. She's street-smart, but is she intelligent? The novel might find an audience among readers who enjoy both the predictability of the romance genre and the warrior ferocity of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but the dialogue lacks the humor and warmth of the latter, and at times, the tale sags under the weight of its own overwrought exposition. Conversational anachronisms like "okay" and nagging plot holes-like how the nearly feral Arista can pass for middle-class in daily life-further disrupt the narrative momentum. The overall effect is that the tale is underbaked; perhaps the planned sequel will help it set. (Romance. 12 & up) Kirkus"

Review for Tangled Webs by Lee Bross By Alyssa ***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog***Tangled Webs by Lee BrossBook One of the Tangled Webs seriesPublisher: Disney-HyperionPublication Date: June 23, 2015Rating: 4 starsSource: ARC sent by the publisherSummary (from Goodreads):London, 1725. Everybody has a secret. Lady A will keep yours—for a price. This sumptuous, scandalous YA novel is wickedly addictive.Lady A is the most notorious blackmailer in the city. With just a mask and a gown to disguise her, she sweeps into lavish balls and exclusive events collecting the most valuable currency in 1725 London—secrets. But leading a double life isn't easy. By day Lady A is just a sixteen-year-old girl named Arista who lives in fear of her abusive master, Bones, and passes herself off as a boy to move safely through the squalor of London's slums. When Bones attempts to dispose of his pawn forever, Arista is rescued by the last person she expects: Jonathan Wild, the infamous Thief Taker General who moves seamlessly between the city's criminal underworld and its most elite upper circles. Arista partners with Wild on her own terms in the hopes of saving enough money to buy passage out of London.Everything changes when she meets Graeden Sinclair, the son of a wealthy merchant. Grae has traveled the world, has seen the exotic lands Arista has longed to escape to her whole life, and he loves Arista for who she is—not for what she can do for him. Being with Grae gives something Arista something precious that she swore off long ago: hope. He has promised to help Arista escape the life of crime that has claimed her since she was a child. But can you ever truly escape the past? What I Liked:When I first saw the name "Arista", I was just the slightest bit turned off. I don't like the name (though it's not TOO bad), but also, I didn't like Lady Arista from Kerstin Gier's Ruby Red trilogy very much (she's a snobby grandmother, so I don't think we're supposed to like her). But Arista from Tangled Webs turned out to be quite a fun and likable character. I enjoyed reading her story, and I sympathized and felt bad for her often. This story was a breath of fresh air, after all those three-star reads I've gone through recently! The setting is London, 1725. Arista is secretly Lady A, a young woman who everyone knows works for Bones, a dangerous man known for his blackmailing. The highest payer will have their secrets kept by Bones. But fail to pay, and your secrets are out. Lady A ensures that secrets are found out and payments are made. This is not a comfortable life, and Arista wants to leave forever and go to India. When a night on the job goes wrong, Arista finds herself in the clutches of a new thief and blackmailer, deceptively no better than Bones. Arista has things to lose - her friend Becky, her budding relationship with Graeden Sinclair and his family... Arista is caught in a web of deceit, and there is no easy way out.I love historical fiction! This book is heavily historical, and I enjoyed it. There were some anachronisms in terms of the speech, I believe, but I tried not to let it bother me too much (they weren't common and they were *almost* passable as common across all time periods). I didn't spot too many other anachronisms, which was nice. The historical aspect of this book was lovely! Of course, Arista's existence as Lady A is odd, but this is where we use our imagination.I like Arista very much. She is hardened and brave, sly and clever. She isn't as devious and malicious as her Lady A reputation might imply. She wants to be free of it all, to go to India and never come back. Arista never wanted to work for Bones, or Wild. She had no choice in either matter, and it was losing her freedom all over again when she "joined" Wild. It's hard not to feel sorry for Arista, given her difficult past, present, and future. But I like how strong she is, how cool and collected yet sad and emotional-filled she is. She isn't a conscience-less thief!By chance and terrible timing, Arista and her lady's maid/friend Becky are abandoned by Bones, and are snatched up by Wild (sort of). Arista makes a deal with Wild, to keep doing what she's doing, but for him. Arista agrees so that she and Becky will have shelter and food. Arista met Grae at a ball while doing a job, and she can't get him out of her head. Fate throws them together, and now Arista sees Grae often.I liked Grae, though you'll see a few complaints below. I found him to be a tad one-dimensional (like I said, more below). He's a strong and kind male protagonist with a very important role to play in the story. He's the son of a merchant owning a fleet of ships, and Grae is the captain of one. Grae is several years older than Arista, and he is a lovely young man. He's definitely a swoon-worthy love interest - and the one and only love interest. The synopsis will have you thinking that there might be some sort of love triangle, possibly with Grae and Wild being the love interests. UNTRUE. Throughout the entire book, the only love interest is Grae. Wild is another employer, another man putting Arista in a gilded cage. There is no romance there whatsoever. There is no romance anywhere except between Arista and Grae. And I really, really liked the romance in this book. Grae and Arista meet before he meets "Arista" - he met her at a masquerade ball while she was disguised, so he didn't know she was Arista or Lady A. Things heat up between them immediately upon seeing each other - lust at first sight. I LOVED this. And then he meets her as Arista, and he's shocked and angry, but the chemistry is still very much alive. And sizzling. Seriously, for a historical fiction novel, the romance was pretty alive! I liked this a lot.The story is exciting, thrilling, sad, and engaging. I thought it got a little predictable towards the end, but that might have just been me. Nevertheless, I liked the ending. I kind of hoped this book would be a standalone, but I see on Goodreads that it is listed as a series. Companion series? I kind of hope it's not a continuation series! This book ended perfectly, and I'd almost hate to see a sequel "ruin" it!What I Did Not Like:I mentioned above - I found Grae to be a smidgen one-dimensional. He just didn't seem real to me. I'm not sure why, but he seemed a bit flat. Almost too perfect? I liked him a lot, don't get me wrong. But I feel like I didn't get enough time to get to know him - maybe that's it?That's another thing - time moves quickly in this book. You know that whole "one months later" or "she did this for the next three weeks" kind of thing? The author employs this tactic, which is fine, but it messes with the progression of Grae and Arista's relationship. I feel like Grae and Arista didn't get enough up-close-and-personal time (and I'm not even talking about in a romantic way - though that would have been nice too). Their relationship is well-developed (we know this because of the time lapse), but we as readers don't SEE this development, really. So it wasn't insta-love at all! More like omission of development. If that makes sense.I liked Grae a lot and I really liked the romance. So don't get me wrong. But both could have been stretched out for readers! This book was short, so another thirty to forty pages of exposition between Grae and Arista would have not only shown the development of their relationship, but also taught us more about Grae!Would I Recommend It:Despite a few misgivings, I really enjoyed this book! It's definitely worth the read, so I would recommend it. Kickbutt heroine, sweet and steamy romance, hot male protagonist, swift action - what's not to love? And it acts well as a standalone (though I see Goodreads says it's part of a series), so theoretically, you could stop after this book and love it!Rating:4 stars. I'm glad I liked this book! It was great, I've already reread some parts. I'm torn on how I feel about it being part of a series, but I will definitely read the sequel, no matter my feelings on this book and the series. This one ended so wonderfully, there shouldn't be a sequel! But I'll read it anyway.

Lady A was not as bad-ass as I expected her to be. She is described to be the most notorious blackmailer, but I didn't get that from her character. She was the middleman in a bigger scheme of things and she actually doesn't like the life she was living and wants out. What I did like about Arista was that she was a good and loyal friend. I loved how she treated Becky which made her likeable since I wasn't so thrilled with her Lady A persona. Another character I liked was Arista's partner in crime Nic the friendship between them was interesting I just wish Nic was better developed. There was romance, but I was not feeling it. It had the insta-love feel to it and to a point I tried to let it go based on the fact that it was written in the eighteenth-century time period and things did move along rather quickly when it came to relationships back in those days, but I didn't really care for Grae either, he was not interesting and felt underdeveloped. I don't see what Arista could have possibly seen in him.Overall Tangled Webs even with all its flaws was a fast read, but I don't see myself picking up the next book in the series.

I am trying to put my thoughts together, but all that comes to mind is AEUHRGSR.EIGHR;EGHSOG. As of the time that I’m writing this (March 16th), Tangled Webs is by far, the best book that I have read in 2015. Yes, it was that amazing. I am amazed by Lee Bross’ writing prowess. If this review seems to be a bit all over the place, that’s because I’m trying to put my gushing thoughts into words.Imagine living your life as an orphan, growing up with no friendly faces, and then being adopted by a frightening man named Bones. Yes, his name was Bones. Imagine having to learn how to steal in order to be given even a scrap of bread. That was Arista’s childhood. But one day, Bones decided to turn Arista into a pawn for his blackmailing schemes. She became known as Lady A, the mysterious woman clad in a gown and a mask, who didn’t take no for an answer. She traded secrets for money, but nothing she did was ever for her- it was all for Bones. Luckily for her, she had two extremely close friends, Nic and Becky, who had grown up with her under Bones’ thumb. Nic served as backup, a bodyguard if you will, whenever Lady A was needed. Becky was a seamstress, and was in charge of making Lady A’s outfits. While Arista was forced into a deceptive, scheming life, it didn’t mean that she had to enjoy it. She constantly thought about freedom, and what if’s. What would her life be like if she was able to escape from Bones? Who would she be if she wasn’t Lady A? These thoughts constantly ran throughout her mind. And one day, something major happened which caused her life to take a turn that she never saw coming. What was it? You’ll have to read to find out!Okay, now that you know what the story was about, *commence the book flailing and gushing!*Tangled Webs taught me what it meant for writing to be gorgeous. I honestly don’t know how to describe it other than being gorgeous! It was smooth, elegant, charming, sophisticated, and just all around beautiful! It was funny- I read the first page, and my eyes immediately opened wide, because I could tell that this book was going to be something special. Yes, I could tell that Tangled Webs was going to be incredible from the first page. That was something special and it very rarely happens. Also, the characters, ooh la la, I loved them all! I felt my heart jump and skip a beat whenever something nerve-wracking happened, and my heart felt warm and fuzzy whenever something good happened. Not only did I feel like I was inside the book, I actually felt like I was Arista! While I was reading, I had no clue what was going on around me in the real world. All that I knew was what was happening to Arista in 1725 London. Yes, this book did take place in the past, which generally tends to make me a bit iffy, but the setting worked perfectly this time.I will give a warning- there is a small love triangle. But, with that being said, I had my eyes on one ship the entire time, and I never looked back! Also, I have added a new book boyfriend to my list. Ahhh, my love. It holds no bounds for one of the love interests. Tangled Webs, by Lee Bross

Etner Iduna is a really good adventure story that rolls toward a fast-paced, exciting conclusion full of magic, mystery, and most importantly - dragons! It takes place in a mythical world with very distinct cultures. The people of each culture are uniquely gifted and dramatically different. Iduna, having grown up among a people different from that of her birth, serves as a bridge between those cultures as you follow her on her quest throughout the land to save those she loves. Iduna is an easy read yet there is a lot of depth behind the characters and cultures to satisfy the deep-thinkers and those liking good social commentary.

Kellie is a kick-ass writer!Okay onto the story now....Everyone wants to find their soulmate and love happy ever after. Rachel was lucky enough to have been born with hers. Yup, she has been sharing her body with Rider, her soulmate. She has always been happy and just wants to stick by him. Even if it means straying away from people. Its all good, until people just see her as crazy and need some help. But lucky for Rachel, she is about to move. Maybe this will be the fresh start she needs. New home, new area, new people, and no one knows about her. Rachel has the chance to make new friend and even try and have a boyfriend. If it all goes well, then should could easily pull off having a life and having Rider. However, things don't go to plan.Rider and her are about to be over. Rachel needs to rebuil herself and learn to love again. Choices are made, and sadly it lead down an unexpected road. But in another way, it also needed to happen. I didn't mind Rider, he was a decent character. But I was so happy to see Rachel be herself more. Making friends, finding love, and being able to make it after Rider and her got torn apart. Its a story that will easily suck you in. Make you fall for the characters. Feel with them, and even need to bring out the tissues. A must must read and I can't wait for the next book!

Cute story with a great new premise By I M Strong This book is really cute and I love the premises but I felt that the idea could have been better developed. The story is told in the third person which took a little to get used to for me. It starts with both characters in the womb and the first few chapters sets up how they came to be and how Rider made himself known to Rachel. Then eventually it jumps to when she is 15 and is moving to another city.It gets a bit predictable towards the end but I still enjoyed this book very much.I wish it had a different tone and was told with alternating POVs and I was kind of doing that in my head (which I often do with books). It was a quick read, 3 or 4 hours. There is one more in the series and this one was free on amazon at the time I got it.It does not end on a cliffhanger but it is not the end of the story. Also it is very PG13. There is some romance but it is not graphic

I really liked the author's writing style By cc2015 I really liked the author's writing style, and while the concept of this book--how Rachel is born with her soulmate--isn't something totally new to me, I found the story itself to be very original and enjoyable. This is definitely a "feel good" kind of story that will draw you in and leave you wanting more when you're done (especially if you enjoy reading YA romance). I definitely recommend this book and this is a great debut novel for this author!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Big Girls Definitely Don't Cry, They Get Slim By Cashmere Who wouldn't love it when a handsome, single man moves into their apartment building. Remi Calder is totally delighted to see Eadan Fleming shifting in. However its quite mortifying to be caught spying on him moving boxes by his younger brother as she hides behind the bushes. Well, she may be a confident young woman most of the time, but she also becomes a clumsy mixed up kid when infatuation hits and with Eadan it hits hard. So what's a girl to do but fall in love.Eadan is trying to get over his cheating fiancee and get a fresh start. However he has decided that the next woman he gets involved with will not be a super thin model lookalike, but a real flesh and blood woman with a few pounds on her. Plus Remi totally fits that bill. When he gets her to help redesign his flat they get to know each other better. Unfortunately Eadan needs to go back home and pick up the slack on behalf of his brother, leaving Remi and him no option but to continue long distance.Little does he know that Remi is helping her young friend Greta become more confident as she adopts a healthier lifestyle and loses weight. The two girls partner up to become thinner and the efforts are clearly visible when they go at it. I love the way the author has brought out the challenges that slightly obese kids go through with bullies and their own self. Of course Eadan's response to the new trim Remi is anything but desirable...Lol. I was gifted a copy of the book by the author for an honest opinion.

By Amazon Customer This book was gifted to me in exchange for an honest review.Mimi's books always have a feel-good element, but this one is even better. SPOILER ALERT: Many times over-weight people are overlooked in the dating arena. Mimi addresses it very well when a young, overweight, but beautiful inside and out, woman finds true love with a man whose initial intentions were not about love. When the young doctor finds out that he can love someone that doesn't fit his idea of a the perfect the woman his beliefs change. He's really in love. A great ending with a couple of twists and turns along the way.

April Mae Manning from Unaccompanied Minor is back, and back in trouble, but this time, she's run out of chances...

April Mae was raised on airplanes by her flight-attendant parents. But since her dad's death and her mom's remarriage to the nefarious pilot Ash Manning, April's been in nothing but danger: two airplane crashes; two car crashes; and now, as a student pilot, in an old plane crippled over the Caribbean. Can she survive, and save her friends, or is this the watery end to "Crash" Manning's story?

Praise for Unaccompanied Minor: "A laugh-out-loud thriller about family court, money laundering and skyjacking" ~Kirkus Reviews

We Will Be Crashing Shortly, by Hollis Gillespie

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—A fast-paced sequel to Unaccompanied Minor (Merit, 2014). April Mae Manning, otherwise known as "Crash" once again finds herself in the middle of a series of crazy events. The teen discovers that her best friend was kidnapped during her driver's test and recruits her unlikely crew of sidekicks to find the missing girl. Plane crashes, MacGyver moves, and FBI interrogations ensue. Like a teen version of Janet Evanovich's "Stephanie Plum" series (Bantam) because of its implausibility and pure entertainment value, this series entry is action-packed and fast paced. Gillespie, the author of a humor blog, writes funny dialogue, but April's perspective is too sarcastic and jaded to ring entirely true. As in the first book, this work has a ton of aviation-related trivia and facts along with all kinds of survival tips, which may interest some readers. VERDICT An additional purchase for most libraries.—Sarah Wilsman, Kent Free Library, Kent, OH

Assume the Position By Ink and Page **This is the sequel to Unaccompanied Minor, so there may be some spoilers.**This book is even crazier than the first. It picks up shortly after April Mae Manning, the almost-sixteen-year-old, who is now the owner of WorldAir, suddenly doesn't for a while. There's a dispute about whether April's grandfather is really her grandfather after all. And then there's a few dead bodies; her friend, the Waffle House waitress, is hanging on by a thread in the hospital; her best friend, Malcolm just pretended that he didn't know who she was; she has still not passed her driving test; and there's something shady going on involving caskets, a flight to the Cayman Islands, and a fluffy dog named Fifi Trixibelle II.Unaccompanied Minor was a very pleasant surprise, and so I had great expectations for the sequel. This is your pilot speaking: I was not one bit disappointed. The action is super fast, sometimes told in flashback, with many of the original characters returning. There are surprises, twists and turns, but after a bumpy takeoff and some issues in the air, the landing is as smooth as butter. It's quite a thrilling ride whenever you are around April Mae Manning and her crew. And bring some airsickness bags, just in case.So stow away all of your electronics, get your beverage of choice and settle in. You're going to want to finish this before deplaning. We Will Be Crashing Shortly by Hollis Gillespie was published June 15, 2015 by Merit Press. However, as the title suggests she seems to find herself in yet, another plane crash situation. This book was much like the first in terms that there are many plot twists within the pages that you don’t really expect as you are reading them. Some kind of creep up on you and when you read it your thinking is that so, others make you think major plot twists and some make you think the words I thought so to yourself.U really enjoyed this book as it has its own kind of humor, its an interesting attention grabbing story and it allowed me a better look at the characters I enjoyed in the previous book. I think that anyone that enjoys realistic like fiction, airplane trivia and a light hearted suspense story could enjoy this series as much as I did.I do hope that the author chooses to add more books to this series as I have come to love the characters and their playful banter and the means in which they communicate with one another. I think it would be fun to read on into the story and see what becomes of their lives in another year or so.

A distinctive and original take on baking, focusing on the flavors of the Middle East, Spain, Morocco, and Eastern Europe

Cinnamon, honey, dates, almonds, apples, and pomegranate—in this stunning book of recipes, Anne Shooter has created cakes and bakes that celebrate these wonderful traditional ingredients. Anne has always been inspired by her Jewish family—her grandmothers, mother, and aunts who baked honey cake, almond cookies, cinnamon balls, rich challah bread, and cheesecakes. Here she gives these traditional recipes a very modern interpretation to create her own collection of bakes and cakes for every occasion. A cinnamon coffee cake from the U.S. via Eastern Europe; an apple and blackberry traybake; pomegranate drizzle cake from Jerusalem; flourless chocolate, pistachio, and walnut brownies; halva shortbread; and a chocolate challah bread and butter pudding. But this is evolution, not revolution, and Anne has also kept precious family recipes for tahini cookies, smoked haddock puff pastries and the bagels and rye breads from her childhood. If you love baking, these recipes will take you on a delightful, delicious journey.

Readers can learn to cut costs by making the most of seasonal ingredients, storing food properly, stocking cupboards correctly, and fully using what they have with this guide to rediscovering lost kitchen skills Many cooks remember jams and chutneys made by grandmothers and great aunts who also seemed to know exactly how long to boil a ham and how to keep butter, and who had a magical pantry full of secret delights. These skills are increasingly in demand as more people want to make use of homegrown produce, reduce the weekly food budget, or rediscover cooking from scratch. A timely book for the new kitchen revolution, this is not only a celebration of lost skills such as curing, rendering, and pickling and a collection of fantastic recipes (such as Roasted Brine-cured Pork, Green Tomato Chutney, and Salted Peanut Brittle), but also provides advice on stocking a pantry and the best way to store cheese, cooked meats, and vegetables. At a time when everyone is looking to shop more locally, cook thriftily, and still enjoy great food, it is a book for how to live today. Recipes include dual measurements.

Scroll up to buy today! >>>How did you get into science fiction romance? I didn’t always love reading new adult dystopian. I mean, my favorite book growing up (and to this day) is A Wrinkle in Time, but I didn’t have a love for reading at all. When I reached the seventh grade we had to read books. She didn’t care what books we read, they could be futuristic romance novels, they could be horror, they could even have robot romance in them. She didn’t care. The teacher had a lot of sword and sorcery novels in her classroom library, and once I found those, I was hooked. Though, I didn't get into young adult romance until much later. >>>Who should read this book? I know a lot of adults read young adult, and that’s awesome. I never pictured my new adult dystopian for teens, but it works out just as well. There’s nothing too graphic in my book, and while there’s a tiny bit of swearing, I’ve read much worse. The real audience I was going for are those women out there who love futuristic romance novels and those looking for awesome, robot romance. I find I have a lot in common with women my age, and my characters are typically of the female variety and just starting out in life, so that works. Honestly, these books could work for anyone. >>>Are there any authors who've shaped your writing? I've read a few new adult dystopian books but for the most part these futuristic romance novels weren't inspired by anything except my own wondering on what a future with androids in it might look like. That's when the idea of robot romance came to me. Brief plot spoilers may follow.*I loved the sci-fi part of this story and the concept of a robot becoming self-aware and even in that state, aspiring to find a different way to live. If I had to describe this premise, I’d call it Terminator meets Pinocchio in a Cinderella kind of way. LOL The fact that Cass was a robot and supposed to be programmed to her owner’s exact needs and desires, but somehow became self-aware and ready to chart her own destiny (such as it was), then had another uphill battle with wanting a life, a way of being, as close to normal as she could possibly get was an offbeat mix that somehow worked for the story. It reminded me of the tv show Dollhouse, where there was a similar concept, but What Lies Behind had a different take on it that I really appreciated. I liked Cass, and I liked that a lot of the book was actually about her journey to becoming completely self-aware, as she first learned to question, then questioned freely. We were able to read along as she was able to understand the differences between her and androids or her and humans, and as she learned the various things she could not experience because of who she was. Instead of it being narrated that she was questioning or having that part skipped completely, it was peppered into almost every interaction she had throughout the book. I liked the ‘android equal rights’ bit; I thought it was a solid way of integrating androids and robots into society in an official way rather than them simply being people’s toys. One thing that I really liked about What Lies Behind was the ‘are humans really different from automatons’ argument, which ended up proving to be a very valid question with the way that the author broke down the similarities between the two. If you’re expecting a more in-depth romance, you won’t be finding it in What Lies Behind, but I actually don’t mind that as it allows for Cass’s growth to take center stage. For the majority of the book, she isn’t even aware that she is capable for any sort of emotional connection at all, so it wouldn’t have been plausible for her level of development at the time. I appreciate that said fact was honored throughout the book and that the idea of allowing the characters to come together a bit more slowly was acted upon. I also liked that the story itself and the descriptive abilities weren’t too elaborate; describing and explaining an advanced society and sci-fi details at the same time can easily become a wordy affair. The author described the details that were essential to the book or the scene, there wasn’t too much description otherwise and I think it was better that way.As for any critiques, I would suggest another run-through by an editor or proofreader; there were a few points of inconsistency and grammatical errors throughout the book. They weren’t severe and I could still understand what was being said, but they were noticeable enough. I wish we’d gotten to know Brandon a bit better as well. It was fully understood that he was a caring and thoughtful person, but we didn’t get to learn too much else about him; there wasn’t too much backstory about him or any of the major characters save for a couple of sentences. The final confrontation in the story felt a little anticlimactic for me. I appreciated that the book wasn’t overly complex, but I guess I expected a little more oomph out of that final scene between Olivia and Cass.Overall, I enjoyed What Lies Behind. I liked the mix of sci-fi, self-exploration and romance and I think it was done in a way that could appeal to both sci-fi and romance fans alike. It wasn’t heavy on either one—it wasn’t full of flowery statements or feelings, but wasn’t quite as cold and unfeeling as many sci-fi books about automatons tend to be. By the by, if you’ve seen and liked Dollhouse, then you’ll probably like this book. It’s a short but interesting read, with concepts that are integrated in a realistic way for the society of that time.

Hall I received a copy of What lies Behind from Travis Simmons, probably originally through Library Thing, but eventually through email.I am so happy that Travis sent me this book and that I decided to blow off work for a day to read it! ; )This fantastic tale is a story about Cass, a machine, a robot, a servant to humans and their causes. This is political, horrific and romantic. I laughed, I cried….it was better than CATS. Seriously though, this book is short yet packed and complete. Nothing is missing, you will love the journey and the end is satisfying. Underlying all the great Tech/sci-fi stuff is a great little love story, not too sappy , but enough to make the romantic in you happy. Not too techie either, but again, enough to make the sci-fi lover smile. It has realistic qualities, at least for those of us that believe that computers will someday be in the brains of all humans and that robots can be lovers, teachers, friends and family. My only wish is that they make a movie of this…possibly a TV series…yeah, a TV series could really work. I would love love love to see Cass and Brandon come alive and take on some bad androids and robot abusers. So my final thought is for you Mr. Travis Simmons….keep writing, you brought joy to this lady!PS: Travis, my boss doesn’t know that I didn’t do anything at work yesterday, so I got away with it. Anything else you would like to send, I would be honored to read and review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Multi-layered Success By Deb Hall What Lies Behind is one of those books that grabbed me from the start. I tore through it when I originally got a copy, and then had to reread it a couple more times in order to really get all the nuances in the plot and subplots. As the description says, Cass is a robot, but there are pieces of her past that are missing to her. Watching her unravel these mysteries -- and seeing how others come about and play out -- is fascinating. The introduction to this book has a caveat of sorts by Simmons saying that he had do some research in the romance department. Researched or not, the romance in the book works. The main character is, after all, a robot who is only recently developing feelings that non-humans wouldn't normally have. And given that the romance in question is frowned upon in the world Simmons has created brings it to another, deeper level. As with other books Simmons has written, What Lies Behind also casts a mirror to some of the social problems in our real world that plague society. That's one of the great jobs fiction has -- shedding light on a current social or political climate. Simmons does it seamlessly without breaking from the story or shoving viewpoints down the reader's throat.Do you like romance that's real, not cookie-cutter? Do you like strong character arcs? Do you like intrigue? Do you like fiction that makes you think? Try this book. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The epic conclusion in the blood-poundingly brilliant Department 19 series, from bestselling author, Will Hill.

The brave men and women of Department 19 have fought Dracula at every turn, but now Zero Hour has passed and the ancient vampire is at full strength.

Inside Department 19, the Operators are exhausted and fractured. Jamie, Larissa, Matt and Kate are each struggling with their own demons. When the friends need each other most, they are further apart than ever.

Outside the Department, the world reels from the revelation that vampires are real. Violence and paranoia spread around the globe and, when it finally comes, Dracula’s opening move is more vicious than anyone could have imagined.

A final battle looms between the forces of darkness and the last, massed ranks of those who stand against it. A battle that will define the future of humanity. A battle that simply cannot be lost…

Review Praise for the Department 19 Series: "High action, original and gripping" - The Sun "Bram Stoker can stop turning in his grave: his 21st-century legacy extends beyond Twilight." - The Telegraph "Absolutely outstanding..." - The Book Bag

About the Author Before quitting his job in publishing to write Department 19, Will Hill worked as a bartender, a bookseller and a door-to-door charity worker. He grew up in the north-east of England, is scared of spiders, and is a big fan of cats. He lives in east London with his girlfriend, where he splits his time between staring out of the window and staring at a computer screen. The latter tends to be more productive.

Stupendous series - superb ending By Splashes Into Books This is the stupendous concluding book in the series as Dracula rises and the final battle commences. Don’t expect twinkly ‘Twilight’ type vampires - in this many are the blood thirsty, vengeful, brutal creatures of Victorian novels. Also be wary of assuming there are clear cut sides to be taken, that all humans are good and all Vampires evil. The author has created a world where the characters are well rounded, complex and, when the final battle is over, the world will have to change and who will live or die you’ll just have to read the story to discover! There are multiple threads running throughout the story, creating a tapestry of opposites - love, loss, trust, deceit, loyalty and treason. It isn’t an easy read, it will leave you feeling uncomfortable at some of the dreadful decisions so-called ‘decent’ people make, making you question your own reactions in similar circumstances and the ending - wow! Like the earlier books in the series, this can be read as a standalone, but readers of the earlier books will have a greater understanding as things progress. Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too,for letting me read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book will leave you breathless. Fans of the series were not disappointed with this installment to the Department 19 series. And anyone picking up this book as the first in the series will thoroughly love it, yet I BEG you to read the others first in order to get the full experience. My only disappointments about this are that the series has come to an end, and that these thrilling novels have not been made into movies yet for everyone to enjoy on the big screen, seeing our favorite characters come to life. Though the end itself was not a disappointment, and I can guarantee you won't want to put the book down even after reading the final word. Author and genius Will Hill obviously put his all into this final novel. Mr.Hills final installment to the series continued to go above and beyond everyone's expectations (which is saying something because they were very very high). When you read this book, you don't simply read the words, you can see the characters and the story develop as if your watching a movie, and you can feel the emotions of the characters as your own begin to bleed out as you become intertwined in the lives of the characters. Congratulations to Mr.Hill on his outstanding success on his novels, they are the best I've ever read.I have recommended this series to everyone of my friends and family and will continue to recommend these books to everyone. This series is my personal favorite, and I will continue to read every book over and over again! Absolutely fantastic. I don't know how else to say it. Absolutely fantastic.

My Only Complaint By Parker Bryce Murphy This book was amazing and I absolutely loved it but it seemed to me that in the begining Larisa randomly aquired these feelings of disgust towards what she was doing in the Department, which I was never shown, or only partialy shown, in previous books. Alsso it was very obvious that her and Jamie very much love eachother and, although they had a bad fight and she had a lot of pent up stress and other emotions, Larisa wouldn't just leave Jamie largely by himself and in the dark for around 6 months, you have to be EXTREMELY mad in order to ditch someone that care about, or even love. But, i digress, that is my own oppinio and my only complaint about this book. Thank you to Will Hill for making this whole series possible, I look forward to your next adventure.p.s. I apologize for and spelling errors of grammatical mess ups
